FIGURE 3 in Austral Hepaticae 50. Gackstroemia in New Zealand, together with an interesting new species

FIGURE 3. Gackstroemia weindorferi (Herzog) Grolle. 1. Two leaf pairs of main shoot, dorsal view; note dorsally interlocking insertion lines and plane and not reflexed dorsal margin of dorsal lobes. 2. Two leaf pairs of main shoot, ventral view (underleaves removed for clarity, only the scars indicated); note first branch underleaf (= fbu); (drawn to same scale as fig. 1). 3. Leaf from main shoot. 4. Median cells of dorsal lobe. 5. Underleaf, in situ, of main shoot, ventral view. 6. Underleaf. 7. Distal sector of underleaf lobe. 8. Tertiary branch showing saccate lobes of both first branch underleaf and underleaves of branch (ventral view). Note the bilobed first branch underleaf (= fbu) of the secondary branch (= 2º br), and the next two underleaves of the branch, the first bilobed similar to the first branch underleaf, the second with both lobes saccate. Underleaf scars are shown on short sector of primary branch (= 1º br). 9. Innermost bracts. 10. Perianth (flattened). 11. Spore and elater drawn to same scale; note proximal face. 12. Elater. (Figs. 1, 2, 5, 8, from Engel 19039A, New Zealand, South Is., Westland Prov., Paparoa Range, ridge immediately N of Sewell Peak; 3, 6, 7, from Engel 13154, Tasmania, E side of Tasman Peninsula, W facing, upper slope of Tatnells Hill; 4, 9-12, from Engel 12912, Tasmania, Mt. Field National Park, off Lake Dobson Road.)

FIGURE 1. Gackstroemia novae-zelandiae R.M.Schust. & J.J.Engel. 1 in Austral Hepaticae 50. Gackstroemia in New Zealand, together with an interesting new species

FIGURE 1. Gackstroemia novae-zelandiae R.M.Schust. & J.J.Engel. 1. Sector of shoot with Frullania-type branch (note first branch underleaf), ventral view. Note also the flattened, lamelliform stylus. 2. Leaf pair of main shoot, dorsal view; note dorsally interlocking insertion lines and reflexed dorsal margin of dorsal lobes. 3, 4. Leaves from main shoot (dm = dorsal margin). 5. Median leaf cells. 6. Dorsal margin of leaf from main shoot. 7. Underleaf, in situ of main shoot (drawn to same scale as fig. 1). 8. Underleaf. 9, 10. Distal sector of underleaf lobes. 11. Tertiary branch (= 3º br) showing explanate lobes of first branch underleaf (= fbu) and explanate underleaves of branch, ventral view (LB = leaf base). (Fig. 3 from Engel 21925, New Zealand, South Is., Otago Prov., Mt. Aspiring Natl. Park, Blue Valley Track; remainder from holotype.)

FIGURE 2. Gackstroemia novae-zelandiae R.M.Schust. & J.J.Engel. 1 in Austral Hepaticae 50. Gackstroemia in New Zealand, together with an interesting new species

FIGURE 2. Gackstroemia novae-zelandiae R.M.Schust. & J.J.Engel. 1. Portion of main shoot with gynoecium pseudolateral in position through growth of a pseudo-innovation (= pi); note also the Frullania-type branch (= FB; hl = half leaf), (dorsal view). The gynoecium forming a sporophyte-bearing coelocaule tightly invested by mutually, strongly imbricated bracts and bracteoles. Note form of capsule valves are coherent at apex, both in wet and (to left) dry conditions. 2. Coelocaule (dorsal view) with bract insertions indicated by scars, and, at summit, a perianth-like structure (the bract margins not fused on the ventral side, see fig. 3). Note also the copious cilia at the perianth mouth. 3. Ventral side of a perianth-like structure shown in fig. 2, note that bract margins are not fused. 4. Portion of perianth mouth. 5. Cilia of perianth mouth. 6. Capsule wall, cross section, the outermost layer of intermediate cells ± in tact, but those within for the most part collapsed. 7. Capsule wall, outer layer. 8. Capsule wall, inner layer. 9. Spore and to left, portion of elater drawn to same scale. 10. Elater. (All from holotype.)
