Staff survey on awareness of gender bias in ATHENA RPOs and RFOs
<p>Task 2.3.1 from WP2 required the collection of data on awareness of gender bias to staff from the ATHENA RPOs and RFOs. An online survey was distributed among the staff of the ATHENA consortium institutions developing a gender equality plan (GEP). ATHENA institutions were requested that the sample was representative as much as possible, meaning this to consist proportionally of female/male, junior/senior positions and staff by occupations depending of the total staff composition in each institution.</p> <p>The aim of the staff survey is:</p> <ul> <li>To identify how aware are the respondents on gender equality in science and research institutions. </li> <li>To identify the biases/stereotypes related to the women´s and men´s role in science and research institutions.</li> <li>To identify gender imbalances and disadvantages in: <ul> <li>Recruitment and promotion,</li> <li>Gaining academic/scientific degree,</li> <li>Participation in decision making,</li> <li>Working conditions and workload,</li> <li>Work-life balance</li> <li>Experiences in harassment</li> </ul> </li> <li>The staff survey results will complement the results of the interviews and focus groups to provide a comprehensive picture of gender equality imbalances in the particular institution.</li> </ul> <p>The staff survey was realised through a standardised questionnaire developed by the WP2 coordinator (UVSK SAV) and approved by the Project Coordinator.</p> <p>The questionnaire consisted of 8 sections devoted to the particular gender areas- dimensions of interest:</p> <ul> <li>Introduction</li> <li>Information on the respondents ´current job</li> <li>Information of respondents´ background</li> <li>Opinions and perception of gender equality in research</li> <li>Recruitment and career development</li> <li>Striving for scientific/academic degree</li> <li>Gender balance in decision-making positions</li> <li>Workload and work-life balance</li> <li>Bulling and harassment</li> </ul> <p>Each section contained 4 – 8 closed and open questions. </p> <p>The results of the data served as support for the WP2 gender equality audit and assessment of procedures and practices at organizational level in D2.3 – Gender equality reports.</p>

<p>This repository contains the dataset for the NAACL 2024 paper titled, "A Comprehensive Study of Gender Bias in Chemical Named Entity Recognition Models."</p> <p>The dataset contains two files:</p> <p>askdoc_female.conll - Female AskDoc dataset<br>askdoc_male.conll - Male AskDoc dataset</p> <p>These files contain annotated AskDoc data with chemical mentions from r/AskDocs on Reddit. What's in a name? Taxonomic and gender biases in the etymology of new species names
<p>As our inventory of Earth's biodiversity progresses, the number of species given a Latin binomial name is also growing. While the coining of species names is bound by rules, the sources of inspiration used by taxonomists are an eclectic mix. We investigated naming trends for nearly 2900 new species of parasitic helminths described in the past two decades. Our analysis indicates that the likelihood of new species being given names that convey some information about them (name derived from morphology, host, or locality of origin) or not (named after an eminent scientist, or for something else) depends on the higher taxonomic group to which the parasite or its host belongs. We also found a consistent gender bias among species named after eminent scientists, with male scientists being immortalised disproportionately more frequently than female scientists. Finally, we found that the tendency for taxonomists to name new species after a family member or close friend has increased over the past twenty years. We end by formulating recommendations for future species naming, aimed at honouring the diverse scientific community regardless of gender or ethnicity and avoiding etymological nepotism and cronyism, while still allowing for creativity in crafting new Latin species names.</p>

Toileting behaviours of the UK public: insights for reducing gender bias wastewater-based epidemiology sampling strategies
<p>Cross-sectional survey results from a toileting behaviour survey conducted between the 27th to the 28th of June 2022. Participants (<em>n</em> = 2109) were aged 18 years or older and were living in the UK. The survey consisted of 17 closed-ended questions, with 7 of the questions addressing specific demographic topics and 10 questions addressed toileting behaviour. The questionnaire was designed by a team consisting of environmental microbiologists, public health specialists, wastewater-based epidemiologists, and social scientists, based on the study objectives and incorporating information from previous studies on the same topic. First, self-report questions were asked on typical frequency of urination and defecation, followed by self-reports of frequency of urination and defecation at a variety of locations including at home, at work, educational buildings, transport hubs, and in public toilets. The comfort in urination/defecation at these locations for defecation and urination was also measured. Other questions about toileting behaviour and health monitoring were measured by statements with a 5-point Likert scale (e.g., strongly disagree to strongly agree). </p>

WinoST: Evaluating Gender Bias in Speech Translation
<p>WinoST is a challenge set for evaluating gender bias in speech translation. WinoST is the speech version of WinoMT (Stanovsky et al., 2019) which is an MT challenge set and both follow an evaluation protocol to measure gender accuracy. WinoST consists of 3888 speech audios in English plus a text file with the the text of these audios.
