<p>The dataset contains the database storing the visual decoding of 10 videos of bees in an observation hive (database.zip). The folder "derived data.zip" contains several files derived with code and GIS tools to obtain the results presented in the paper. The videos are available in the "videos.zip" file. Finally, the Python script "waggle_dance_annulus.py" is the code that generates the box-plot like annulus geometry for dances.</p>

Cerulean Warbler light-level geolocator data

<p>The Cerulean Warbler (<em>Setophaga cerulea</em>) is a declining Nearctic-Neotropical migratory species of conservation concern. Implementing full annual cycle conservation strategies to facilitate recovery has been difficult because we know little about the migratory period or connectivity between North American breeding regions and South American non-breeding regions. Between 2014–2017, we deployed geolocators on 282 males at 13 study sites throughout the species' range with the objectives of a) evaluating the strength of connectivity between breeding and non-breeding regions; b) identifying approximate routes and stopover regions, and c) documenting migration phenology. We retrieved migration data from 28 birds and most (14/15; 93%) Appalachian-breeders overwintered in the Colombian/Venezuelan Andes, whereas 5/7 (71%) breeders from the Ozarks overwintered in the southwestern portion of their non-breeding range in Peru/Ecuador. During spring migration, over a 26 d ± 1.2 (SE) period, birds (<em>n</em> = 23) staged at multiple stopover locations between Panama and southern Mexico. The migratory periods were substantial and approximately equal in duration: 38 ± 2 d (SE) in fall and 42 d ± 2 (SE) in spring. Based on the observed connectivity pattern, conservation of Appalachian breeding populations should focus on forest protection and restoration in premontane/lower montane forests of Colombia and Venezuela, whereas Ozark breeding population conservation should focus efforts in Ecuador and Peru. Additionally, protections of forests used by ceruleans during stopovers throughout Central America and southern Mexico, in southeastern United States coastal areas, and in the Mississippi Alluvial Valley are likely to have high conservation value for this species.</p>

Data for: Geolocation and immersion loggers reveal year-round residency and consequent nutrient deposition rates of adult red-footed boobies in the Chagos Archipelago, tropical Indian Ocean

<p>Bio-logging has revealed much about high-latitude seabird migratory strategies, but migratory behaviour in tropical species may differ, with implications for understanding nutrient deposition. Here we use combined light-level and saltwater immersion loggers to study the year-round movement behaviour of adult red-footed boobies (<em>Sula sula rubripes</em>) from the Chagos Archipelago, tropical Indian Ocean to assess migratory movements and estimate nutrient deposition rates based on the number of days they spent ashore. Light levels suggest that red-footed boobies are resident in the Chagos Archipelago year-round, although there are large latitudinal errors this close to the equator. Immersion data also indicate residency with tracked birds returning to land every one or two days. Spending an average of 79.86 ± 2.80 days and 280.84 ± 2.64 nights per year on land allows us to estimate that the 21,670 pairs of red-footed boobies deposit 37.34 ± 0.56 tonnes year<sup>-1</sup> of guano-derived nitrogen throughout the archipelago. Our findings have implications for tropical seabird conservation and phylogenetics, as well as for assessing the impact of seabird nutrients on coral reef ecosystems.</p>

Data from: Matching geographical assignment by stable isotopes with African non-breeding sites of Barn swallows Hirundo rustica tracked by geolocation

Knowledge on whereabouts within the annual cycle of migratory species is prerequisite for many aspects in ecology and biological conservation. Spatial assignments of stable isotopes archived in tissues allows for later inference on sites where the specific tissue had been grown.. It has been rarely tested whether spatial assignments match directly tracked non-breeding residences, especially for migratory songbirds. We here compare assignments of stable isotopes from feathers of Palaearctic Barn swallows Hirundo rustica with their African non-breeding residence sites tracked by geolocation. Assignments based on δ2H, δ13C and δ15N isotope compositions delineate three main non-breeding regions: a main cluster in central Africa, a second in West Africa, and the third cluster in Northern Africa. Using δ13C, δ15N only, non-breeding sites ranged from clusters in West/Southwest Africa to South East Africa with a centre in Central Africa. The non-breeding areas (50% and 75% Kernel density estimates, KDE) of the birds tracked by geolocation stretched from West Africa via central Africa to southern Africa. We found little overlap of 0.3% (assuming an 1:1 odds ratio) to 1.4 % (3:1 odds ratio) in the three element assignments and KDEs for only 2 and 13 individuals out of 32 birds. Assignment maps for two elements (δ13C, δ15N) and KDEs showed higher consistencies with an overlap of 3.6 and 8.5% for 12 and 18 birds. We argue that the low matching between stable isotope assignments and non-breeding sites in our study arise from insufficient baseline data for Africa (concerning both isoscapes and specific discrimination functions). However, other factors like aerial foraging habit of the species, and a potential mismatch of non-breeding site location and the spatial origin of aerial plankton might further hamper accurate assignments. Finally we call for concerted analyses of tissues i.e. feathers and claws of birds which are grown at known sites across the continent and from species with various ecological requirements (diverse habitats, foraging behaviours, and diet compositions) to establish isoscapes for general applicability.

Data from: Migration routes and staging areas of trans-Saharan Turtle Doves appraised from light-level geolocators

The identification of migration routes, wintering grounds and stopover sites are crucial issues for the understanding of the Palearctic-African bird migration system as well as for the development of relevant conservation strategies for trans-Saharan migrants. Using miniaturized light-level geolocators we report a comprehensive and detailed year round track of a granivorous trans-Saharan migrant, the European Turtle Dove (Streptopelia turtur). From five recovered loggers, our data provide new insights on migratory journeys and winter destinations of Turtle Doves originating from a breeding population in Western France. Data confirm that Turtle Doves wintered in West Africa. The main wintering area encompassed Western Mali, the Inner Delta Niger and the Malian/Mauritanian border. Some individuals also extended their wintering ranges over North Guinea, North-West of Burkina Faso and the Ivory-Coast. Our results reveal that all individuals did not spend the winter period at a single location; some of them experienced a clear eastward shift of several hundred kilometres. We also found evidence for a loop migration pattern, with a post-breeding migration flyway lying west of the spring route. Finally, we found that on their way back to breeding grounds Turtle Doves needed to refuel after crossing the Sahara desert. Contrary to previous suggestions, our data reveal that birds used stopover sites for several weeks, presumably in Morocco and North Algeria. This later finding is a crucial issue for future conservation strategies because environmental conditions on these staging areas might play a pivotal role in population dynamics of this declining species.

Data from: Assessing costs of carrying geolocators using feather corticosterone in two species of aerial insectivore

Despite benefits of using light-sensitive geolocators to track animal movements and describe patterns of migratory connectivity, concerns have been raised about negative effects of these devices, particularly in small species of aerial insectivore. Geolocators may act as handicaps that increase energetic expenditure, which could explain reported effects of geolocators on survival. We tested this 'Energetic Expenditure Hypothesis' in 12 populations of tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor) and barn swallows (Hirundo rustica) from North America and Europe, using measurements of corticosterone from feathers (CORTf) grown after deployment of geolocators as a measure of physiology relevant to energetics. Contrary to predictions, neither among- (both species) nor within-individual (tree swallows only) levels of CORTf differed with respect to instrumentation. Thus, to the extent that CORTf reflects energetic expenditure, geolocators apparently were not a strong handicap for birds that returned post-deployment. While this physiological evidence suggests that information about migration obtained from returning geolocator-equipped swallows is unbiased with regard to levels of stress, we cannot discount the possibility that corticosterone played a role in reported effects of geolocators on survival in birds, and suggest that future studies relate corticosterone to antecedent factors, such as reproductive history, and to downstream fitness costs.

Data from: Effect of light-level geolocators on apparent survival of two highly aerial swift species

Light-level geolocators are currently widely used to track the migration of small-sized birds, but their potentially detrimental effects on survival of highly aerial species have been poorly investigated so far. We recorded capture-recapture histories of 283 common swifts Apus apus and 107 pallid swifts Apus pallidus breeding in 14 colonies in Italy, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland that were deployed with 10 different types of geolocators ('geolocator birds'), and compared their survival with that of, respectively, 215 common and 101 pallid swifts not equipped with geolocators ('control birds'). We performed both traditional GLMM using return rate as a proxy for survival and mark-recapture models to estimate survival while accounting for recapture probability. In all the analyses, geolocator birds showed reduced apparent survival compared to controls. The extent of the negative effect on survival differed between the species but the direction of the difference between species was opposite in either type of analysis. Geolocator weight was always lower 3% of body mass or less, and did not affect survival per se. Geolocators with a light-stalk, which is used in some geolocator models to reduce light sensor shading by feathers, decreased apparent survival more than models without light-stalk. Apparent survival of geolocator birds significantly varied among sites, being much higher in northern Europe. Despite in our analyses we could only partly account for variable recapture probabilities among sites and for inter-annual variability in survival, our results generally showed that equipping swifts with geolocators decreased their survival prospects, but also that the magnitude of this effect may depend on species-specific traits. These conclusions are in line with those of other studies on aerial foragers. We suggest that future studies tracking the movements of aerial insectivorous birds should use devices designed to minimize drag.

Geolocating and Measuring Offshore Infrastructure with Multimodal Satellite Data

<p><em>Please cite this when using the dataset and code.</em></p> <p>The offshore infrastructure is rapidly spreading in the Scottish waters to satisfy the increasing energy demand. The up-to-date knowledge of their distribution and size is critical for the development and management of marine ecosystems. With the development of remote sensing techniques, satellite data have been widely used in offshore infrastructure detection on the vast ocean. However, the automatic and accurate identification on remote sensing data is still challenging that every kind of data have limitations. Here&nbsp;we combine the Sentinel-1 SAR data and Sentinel-2 Multi-Spectral Instrument (MSI) imagery to propose an automatic method for the location detection and size evaluation of offshore infrastructure in Scottish waters. Specifically, three strategies (transformed median composite, 2D-SSA filtering and threshold segmentation) were designed to first extract the contour range on Sentinel-1 data.
