Dataset: Submicron‐ and Nanoplastic Detection at Low Micro‐ to Nanogram Concentrations Using Gold Nanostar‐Based Surface‐Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) Substrates

<p>ABSTRACT</p> <p>The presence of submicron- (1 &micro;m &ndash; 100 nm) and nanoplastic (&lt; 100 nm) particles within various sample matrices, ranging from marine environments to foods and beverages, has become a topic of increasing interest in recent years. Despite this interest, very few analytical techniques remain that allow for the detection of these small plastic particles in the low concentration ranges that they are anticipated to be present at. Research focused on optimizing surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) to enhance signal obtained in Raman spectroscopy has been shown to have great potential for the detection of plastic particles below conventional resolution limits. In this study, we produce SERS substrates composed of gold nanostars and assess their potential for submicron- and nanoplastic detection. The results show 33 nm polystyrene could be detected down to 1.25 &micro;g/mL while 36 nm poly(ethylene terephthalate) was detected down to 5 &micro;g/mL. These results confirm the promising potential of the gold nanostar-based SERS substrates for nanoplastic detection. Furthermore, combined with findings for 121 nm polypropylene and 126 nm polyethylene particles, they highlight potential differences in analytical performance that depend on the properties of the plastics being studied.</p>

Synthesis of Tuneable Gold Nanostars: the Role of Adenosine Monophosphate

<p>The seed-mediated growth of gold nanostructures is known to be strongly dependent on the gold seed nanocrystal structure but also in the presence of different additives that may influence the morphology, and therefore the crystalline structure of the final nanoparticle. Among the different additives or capping ligands, biomolecules are an interesting family due to their potential biomedical applications such as drug delivery, bioimaging, biosensing, phototherapy, and antimicrobial activities. Here, we develop a seed-mediated strategy for synthesizing uniform Au nanostars with tuneable optical properties that involve adenosine monophosphate (AMP) as capping ligand. The experimental data reveal the key role of AMP not just providing colloidal stability and directing the reduction of the gold precursor via complexation but also mediating the anisotropic growth of the Au seeds via its selective adsorption on the different crystalline facets of Au nanoparticles. These observations agree with theoretical simulations carried out using molecular dynamics and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Interestingly, the obtained Au nanostars showed high thermal stability as well as colloidal stability in polar organic solvents, which allowed their direct silica coating via the St&ouml;ber method. Importantly, we also explored the mimic enzymatic activity of the resulting gold nanostars and observed a superior catalytic activity compared with other gold nanoparticles reported in the literature.</p>

Data from: Modified HEPES one-pot synthetic strategy for gold nanostars

Gold nanostars are being utilized more regularly in the biosensing field. Despite their useful attributes, there is still a need to optimize aspects of the synthesis and stability. The seedless, synthetic method comprised of 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1-piperazineethanesulfonic acid (HEPES) is a facile, rapid method, however, produces heteromorphic nanostars. The modification of a HEPES method resulted in a silver-assisted, seedless gold nanostar synthesis method. The nanostars resulting from this method were monodispersed, multi-branched and approximately 37nm + 2nm in diameter. It proved to be a repeatable method that produced homogenous and robust nanostars. Once functionalized with polyvinylpyrrolidone 10 000, the new nanostars were observed to be stable in various environments such as salt, ionic strength and cell culture medium. In conclusion, the addition of the silver nitrate improved the morphology of the reported HEPES nanostars for the purpose of nanobiosensor development.
