Code and data for: Human pressures threaten diet specialized mammal communities

<p><span><span>Environmental change is increasing worldwide, and many animal species face anthropogenic threats, especially diet specialists. Yet the degree to which specialist species are currently impacted by environmental change remains poorly understood. Here, we examine how anthropogenic pressures impact dietary specialist species. To achieve this, we calculated an index of diet specialization for the majority of mammal species, based on the Gini inequality coefficient focused on all different dietary items and combined these indices with human footprint data. We used spatially explicit tests to compare the global pattern of mammal diet specialization based on Mantel statistics and a generalized linear mixed model to assess the variations in the percentage of diet specialist species in mammal communities regarding the total species richness, mean values of the human footprint, and the interaction between protected or non-protected areas and the continent. These analyses revealed global patterns in human pressure and its potential impacts on dietary specialist mammal species. We found that areas with many diet specialists in mammal communities are also impacted by high human pressure. Additionally, we found that the global protected area system adequately covers habitat for many mammal diet specialists, but has lower effectiveness in South America, Oceania, North America and Europe compared with Africa and Asia. Finally, we identified potential reservoirs for specialist species &ndash; places that contain many highly diet-specialist species and are subject to less human pressure &ndash; which may be important for conservation efforts. Our findings highlight limitations with existing conservation efforts and underscore the importance of conserving specialist species.</span></span></p>

Data from: Shifting niches of marine predators due to human exploitation: the diet of the South American sea lion (Otaria flavescens) since the late Holocene as a case study

Stable isotope ratios of carbon and nitrogen in archaeological and modern bone samples have been used to reconstruct the dietary changes of the South American sea lion Otaria flavescens from the late Holocene to the present in the southwestern Atlantic. We sampled bones from archaeological sites in northern-central and southern Patagonia, Argentina, and bones housed in modern scientific collections. Additionally, we analyzed the stable isotope ratios in ancient and modern shells of intertidal molluscs to explore changes in the isotope baseline and allow comparison between bone samples from different periods after correction for baseline shifts. Results confirmed the trophic plasticity of the South American sea lion, demonstrated the much larger impact of modern exploitation of marine resources as compared with that of hunter-gatherers, and underscored the dissimilarity between the past and modern niches of exploited species. These conclusions are supported by the rather stable diet of South American sea lions during several millennia of aboriginal exploitation, in both northern-central and southern Patagonia, and the dramatic increase in trophic level observed during the twentieth century. The recent increase in trophic level might be related to the smaller population size resulting from modern sealing and the resulting reduced intraspecific competition. These results demonstrate how much can be learned about the ecology of modern species thanks to retrospective studies beyond the current, anthropogenically modified setting where ecosystem structure is totally different from that in the pristine environments where current species evolved.

Tracking gold mining derived mercury pollution into human diets in the Madre de Dios region of Peru

<p>Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) is the largest global anthropogenic mercury (Hg) source and is widespread in the Peruvian Amazon. While numerous studies have examined fish Hg content near ASGM, Hg accumulation in other commonly consumed animal- and plant-based foods from terrestrial environments is often overlooked. These data were collected in 2018 and 2019 to understand Hg exposure from food staples in Peru's Madre de Dios region. This dataset contains measurements of total Hg and methyl Hg content in locally sourced crops, fish, chicken meat, chicken feathers, and eggs from ASGM-impacted and upstream reference communities. Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope signatures from fish and chicken were also measured to characterize trophic position and magnification.</p>
