North Temperate Lakes LTER Long-term winter chemical limnology and days since ice-on for primary study lakes 1982 - 2014

This data set integrates long-term data sets on winter nutrient chemistry with ice phenology (number of days since ice-on), focusing on the subset of measurements taken during ice cover. Parameters characterizing limnology of 5 primary lakes (Allequash, Big Muskellunge, Crystal, Sparkling, and Trout lakes, are measured at one station in the deepest part of each lake at the surface, middle, and deep (~1 meter above bottom). These parameters include nitrate-N, ammonium-N, total dissolved phosphorus, dissolved inorganic carbon, water temperature, dissolved oxygen, and pH. Water temperature and dissolved oxygen values are the zonal averages from more complete depth profiles. Sampling Frequency: every 6 weeks during ice-covered season for the northern lakes. The ice season duration is defined as the time elapsed between day of ice-edge advance and day of ice-edge retreat within a given sea ice year, which begins mid-February (mean minimum of summer sea ice extent for the Southern Ocean) and ends the following mid-February. Ensemble calculations of "Ice Days" from EURO-CORDEX data for Europe

<p><strong>Climate Index: </strong>Ice days</p> <p><strong>Definition:</strong> Number of days with daily maximum temperature below 0&deg;C.</p> <p><strong>Additional information:</strong> The dataset is based on an ensemble of EURO-CORDEX model simulations of daily near-surface maximum temperature. Vertical land motion due to present-day ice loss from Greenland's and Canada's peripheral glaciers

<p>Greenland's bedrock responds to the ongoing loss of ice mass with an elastic vertical land motion (VLM) that is measured by Greenland's GNSS Network (GNET). The measured VLM also contains other contributions, including the long-term viscoelastic response of the Earth to previous deglaciation.</p> <p>Greenland's ice sheet (GrIS) is producing the most significant contribution to the total VLM. The contribution of peripheral glaciers (PGs) from both Greenland (GrPGs) and Arctic Canada (CanPGs) has not been carefully accounted for in the GNSS time series analysis. This is a significant concern, since GNET stations are often closer to PGs than to the ice sheet. </p> <p>We find that PGs produce significant elastic rebound, especially in North and East Greenland. Across these regions, the PGs result in up to 37% of the elastic rebound. For a few stations in the North, the VLM from PGs is larger than the GrIS one.</p>

The EcoTrends project was established in 2004 by Dr. Debra Peters (Jornada Basin LTER, USDA-ARS Jornada Experimental Range) and Dr. Ariel Lugo (Luquillo LTER, USDA-FS Luquillo Experimental Forest) to support the collection and analysis of long-term ecological datasets. The project is a large synthesis effort focused on improving the accessibility and use of long-term data. At present, there are ~50 state and federally funded research sites that are participating and contributing to the EcoTrends project, including all 26 Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) sites and sites funded by the USDA Agriculture Research Service (ARS), USDA Forest Service, US Department of Energy, US Geological Survey (USGS) and numerous universities. Data from the EcoTrends project are available through an exploratory web portal (http://www.ecotrends.info). This web portal enables the continuation of data compilation and accessibility by users through an interactive web application. Ongoing data compilation is updated through both manual and automatic processing as part of the LTER Provenance Aware Synthesis Tracking Architecture (PASTA). Each data granule is a tile consisting of 10 x 10 degrees of data gridded to the Lambert Azimuthal Equal Area Scalable Earth Grid (EASE-Grid). This data set reports sea ice cover/extent derived from radiance data acquired by the Visible Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite (VIIRS). Following the approach used by MODIS, the algorithm converts VIIRS calibrated radiances into brightness temperature and computes sea ice cover using Normalized Difference Snow Index (NDSI). VIIRS flies on board the Joint Polar Satellite System 1 (JPSS-1), also known as NOAA-20.
