Data from: Using risk of bias domains to identify opportunities for improvement in food- and nutrition-related research: an evaluation of research type and design, year of publication, and source of funding

Purpose: This retrospective cross-sectional study aimed to identify opportunities for improvement in food and nutrition research by examining risk of bias (ROB) domains. Methods: Rating were extracted from critical appraisal records for 5675 studies used in systematic reviews conducted by three organizations. Variables were as follows: ROB domains defined by the Cochrane Collaboration (Selection, Performance, Detection, Attrition, and Reporting), publication year, research type (intervention or observation) and specific design, funder, and overall quality rating (positive, neutral, or negative). Appraisal instrument questions were mapped to ROB domains. The kappa statistic was used to determine consistency when multiple ROB ratings were available. Binary logistic regression and multinomial logistic regression were used to predict overall quality and ROB domains. Findings: Studies represented a wide variety of research topics (clinical nutrition, food safety, dietary patterns, and dietary supplements) among 15 different research designs with a balance of intervention (49%) and observation (51%) types, published between 1930 and 2015 (64% between 2000-2009). Duplicate ratings (10%) were consistent (k=0.86-0.94). Selection and Performance domain criteria were least likely to be met (57.9% to 60.1%). Selection, Detection, and Performance ROB ratings predicted neutral or negative quality compared to positive quality (p&lt;0.001). Funder, year, and research design were significant predictors of ROB. Some sources of funding predicted increased ROB (p&lt;0.001) for Selection (Interventional: industry only and none/not reported; Observational: other only and none/not reported) and Reporting (Observational: university only and other only). Reduced ROB was predicted by combined and other-only funding for intervention research (p&lt;0.005). Performance ROB domain ratings started significantly improving in 2000; others improved after 1990 (p&lt;0.001). Research designs with higher ROB were nonrandomized intervention and time series designs compared to RCT and prospective cohort designs respectively (p&lt;0.001). Conclusions: Opportunities for improvement in food and nutrition research are in the Selection, Performance, and Detection ROB domains.

Data from: Opportunities to catalyze improved healthcare access in pluralistic systems: a cross-sectional study in Haiti

<p><b>Introduction. </b>Gains to ensure global healthcare access are at risk of stalling because some old resilient challenges require new solutions. Our objective was to identify determinants of intended versus actual care-seeking behaviors in a pluralistic healthcare system that is reliant on both conventional and non-conventional providers and discover opportunities to catalyze improved healthcare access.</p> <p><b>Methods.</b> A cross-sectional study was conducted among households with children less than 5 years of age in Haiti. Households were randomly sampled geographically with stratifications for population density. Household questionnaires with standardized cases (intentions) were compared to self-recall of health events (behaviors). The connectedness of households and their providers was determined by network analysis.</p> <p><b>Results.</b> A total of 568 households (incorporating 2900 members) and 65 providers were enrolled. Households reported 636 health events in the prior month. Households sought care for 35% (n=220) and treated with home remedies for 44% (n=277). The odds of seeking care increased 217% for severe events (aOR=3.17; 95%CI 1.99-5.05; p&lt; 0.001). The odds of seeking care from a conventional provider increased by 37% with increasing distance (aOR=1.37; 95%CI 1.06-1.79; p=0.016). Despite stating an intention to seek care from conventional providers, there was a lack of congruence in practice that favored non-conventional providers (McNemar's Chi-squared Test p&lt;0.001). Care was sought from primary providers for 68% (n=150) of cases within a three-tiered network; 25% (n=38/150) were non-conventional.</p> <p><b>Conclusion.</b> Addressing geographic barriers, possibly with technology solutions, should be prioritized to meet healthcare seeking intentions while developing approaches to connect non-conventional providers into healthcare networks when geographic barriers cannot be overcome.</p>

Identifying Improvement Opportunities in Software Engineering Education at the Maranhão State: Listening to Voices from Academy and Industry

<p>The teaching of Software Engineering (SE) has become challenging due to the large amount of content taught and the constant evolution of the software industry, directly impacting the requirements necessary to apply for a position in the area of Information Technology (IT). In this context, it is clear that students of computer courses still find it difficult to know how to prepare for the job market, and Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) may have difficulties in aligning themselves with market expectations with their syllabus in SE. This paper aims to provide a holistic view of the teaching-learning process, involving the views of students, HEIs and IT companies in the context of the state of Maranh&atilde;o; and to propose reflections on the current state of the education to complement the contents and methodologies applied in the classroom with the needs of the local industry. To do so, three activities were carried out: (1) mapping expectations and evaluating higher education from the students&rsquo; point of view; (2) analysis of higher education disciplines in higher education institutions in the state of Maranh&atilde;o in Brazil; and (3) survey of expectations of the IT market considering the vacancies disclosed in relation to the SE area in the state of Maranh&atilde;o. The results indicate a partial fulfillment of the demand regarding the taught topics related to SE from the local industry by the HEIs. In addition, there is a need to improve the teaching-learning methodological processes, focusing on practical activities and the learning of teamwork skills, in addition to knowledge in software development.</p>
