The data in this package is associated with the analysis for a manuscript titled "Multiple community properties drive ecosystem resistance and resilience to extreme climate events across mesic grasslands". The files include compiled data on plant biomass production, species abundance, experimental treatments, extreme climate event values, and calculated diversity and stability measures from grassland plots in experiments at CDR, KBS, and KNZ LTER sites.
The influence of boating noise on the parental care behaviors of smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu) during the summer of 2024 at Douglas Lake, Michigan, USA.
Anthropogenic noise is on the increase and in aquatic systems one of the major sources of noise is boat traffic. For organisms in lakes, rivers, and oceans that are capable of hearing, anthropogenic noise may alter behavior in a number of different ways. Here we did a combination of field and experimental work by locating smallmouth bass nests that were actively being guarded by males. Using an underwater drone, we monitored nest guarding behavior before and after a boat ran by the nest. In addition, we monitored behavior during this period while simultaneously recording boat motor noise. The results showed that the sequence of behavior performed by bass was altered during and after the boat ran by the nest.
Influence of Little Ice Age on New England Vegetation from 2000 BP to Present
This multi-proxy study uses paleoecological, paleolimnological, and historical approaches to reconstruct climate, vegetation, and cultural dynamics over the past 1500 years at sites arrayed across the climatic and forest gradients of New England and to place these results in a regional framework through analysis of pollen records from the North American Pollen Database. High resolution records were obtained using pollen to interpret vegetation history; chironomids, stable isotopes, geochemistry, and diatoms, supplemented by historical reconstructions, to interpret climate history; charcoal and land-use data to document the human impacts; and Pb-210 and C-14 for chronological control. Results will provide: (1) an objective characterization of the Little Ice Age and climate history in New England, (2) comparison of pre- and post-European forest dynamics in relationship to independent environmental and land-use histories, (3) a reexamination of historical vegetation dynamics in light of prior climate an vegetation change, and (4) widespread availability of data and results through publications, symposium presentation, and the Harvard Forest Archives and web pages.
Examining genome size and nutrient influence on plant damage patterns
Data was collected to examine whether and how plant genome size (GS) interacts with environmental nutrient additions to influence the amount and patterns of damage plants sustain from invertebrate herbivores and fungal pathogens. Plants were selected based on visual abundance in treatment plots in which nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), or NP combined had been annually added (Cont. is the abbreviation we used for the control plot with no nutrients added). Additionally, plant traits of percent foliar carbon (% C), percent foliar nitrogen (% N), and specific leaf area (SLA) were measured from all the same plants that damage values were observed from. Data was collected from 847 plants (626 forb individuals, 221 grass individuals) in eight grassland sites that are part of the Nutrient Network (https://nutnet.org), a globally distributed experiment in which plots have different nutrient amendment treatments that are administered identically to allow cross-site comparisons of the effects of nutrients on biodiversity patterning. The sites chosen varied along a north-south latitude, longitude, mean annual precipitation (MAP) and mean annual temperature (MAT) gradient in the United States. All field data was collected between May 2022 and August 2022. WSC - The Influence of Legacy P on Lake Water Quality
Using a suite of numerical models, we investigated the influence of legacy P on water quality in the Yahara Watershed of southern Wisconsin, USA. The suite included Agro-IBIS, a terrestrial ecosystem model; THMB, a hydrologic and nutrient routing model; and the Yahara Water Quality Model which estimates water quality indicators in the Yahara chain of lakes. Using five alternative scenarios of antecedent P storage (legacy P) in soils and channels under historical climate conditions, we simulated outcomes of P yield from the landscape, lake P loading, and three lake water quality indicators. <p>The development of a recycling process for various REBCO materials is crucial considering both environmental sustainability and economic efficiency, particularly in light of the upcoming large-scale applications. In this paper, a novel general recycling process based on chemical dissolution was employed to grow REBCO bulks; recycled material obtained by recycling defective YBCO single-domain bulks was added (15 wt. %, 30 wt. % and 45 wt. %) to raw materials to prepare recycled YBCO precursor powder. Subsequently, recycled single-domain YBCO bulks were produced using Top-Seeded Melt Growth. The waste recycling related to of single-domain bulks growth was chosen, as it represents the most challenging form of waste in the context of REBCO superconductor production. The properties and microstructure of recycled bulks were further analyzed to determine the influence of the amount of recycled material used and compared to commercially produced bulks. Single-domain YBCO bulks were grown successfully from the recycled precursor powder. Furthermore, it was found that their properties could be tuned by varying the amount of the added recycled powder, allowing the use of vast amounts of REBCO waste for the preparation of bulks, when achieving the best possible properties is not essential for a given application. Given that the underlying recycling process is designed to work for all REBCO systems and any form of waste, it has significant implications for the sustainability and cost-effectiveness of REBCO superconductor production. </p>

Dataset of The distinct influence of different maternal mental health symptom profiles on infant sleep during the first year postpartum: a cross-sectional survey
<p>The distinct influence of different, but comorbid, maternal mental health difficulties, such as postpartum depression, anxiety, or childbirth-related posttraumatic stress disorder (CB-PTSD) on infant sleep is unknown, although maternal mental health was reported to be associated with infant sleep. This paper first aimed to associations between maternal mental health symptoms and infant sleep. Second, it aimed to exploratory obtain maternal mental health symptom profiles from maternal mental health symptoms. Finally, it aimed to investigate the distinct influence of these maternal mental health symptom profiles on infant sleep, when including mediators (i.e., maternal perception of infant temperament and method to fall asleep) and moderators (maternal educational level and infant age).</p> <p>This dataset contains data on the mental health (i.e., CB-PTSD, depression, anxiety) of 410 mothers with an infant aged between 3 to 12 months old. Information on infant sleep and temperament (negative emotionality) was collected via standardised maternal-report questionnaires (City BiTS, EPDS, HADS, BISQ, and IBQ-R very short form). <p>Data generated during an experiment of decomposition of <em>Casuarina equisetifolia</em> litter by the application of vermicompost (VC) or the combination vermicompost + the earthworm <em>Eisenia andrei</em> (E).</p> <p>Six files are included:</p> <p>"<strong>readme.csv</strong>" is a file where we explain the meaning of each column (and in which units is expressed) in each of the other five files.</p> <p>"<strong>earthworm_N_biomass.csv</strong>" is a table with the number of <em>Eisenia andrei</em> individuals and the total earthworm fresh weight in each of the experimental units we sampled</p> <p><strong>"FTIR_spectra.csv" </strong>is a file with the raw spectral data we obtained from the litter by Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy combined with Attenuated Total Reflectance (FTIR-ATR). First column indicate the wavenumber (cm-1) and the other columns indicate the absorbance values of each litter sample for each wavenumber.</p> <p><strong>"litter_chemical_composition.csv"</strong> is a file with the raw data of the concentrations of different chemical elements measured in <em>C. equisetifolia</em> litter collected at different decomposition times.</p> <p><strong>"litter_mass_loss.csv"</strong> contains the dry weight data of the litter at time 0 and after each collection time, as well as the percentage of litter mass loss with time. .</p> <p>"<strong>mesofaunal_com.</strong><strong>csv</strong>" are the numbers of individuals of several groups of mesofaunal organisms (collembolans, mites, and others) we recovered in each of our experimental units.</p>
Influence of soil amendment and crop species on nutrient cycling in a St. Paul urban garden, 2017-2023
An experiment was conducted from 2017-2023 at the University of St. Thomas research garden (Saint Paul, MN) to determine rates of nutrient recycling and loss from compost applied to urban gardens. Thirty-two 4 m2 study plots received one of six different soil amendment treatments, with four different crops growing on each plot. Meteorological data includes hourly measurements of rainfall, solar radiation, temperature and relative humidity, and wind speed and direction, from June 2017-October 2023. Hourly soil moisture measurements were recorded at depths of 10 cm, 20 cm, and 30 cm, from June-December 2021, June-October 2022, and June-October 2023. Annual crop harvest totals from each subplot are reported for 2017-2023. Leachate was collected from lysimeters installed in each of the 132 subplots weekly from June-October of each year (2017-2023), recording total volume. Leachate subsamples were analyzed for NO3-N, NH4-N, and PO4-P. Soil samples were collected at the beginning and end of the growing season in 2017, and every two weeks during the growing season from 2018-2023, and analyzed for pH, organic matter, Bray-1 extractable P, available K, nitrate, and ammonium, at the University of Minnesota Analytical Research Laboratory.
Influence of weather forecast resolution on the circulation of Lake George, NY.
This dataset contains outputs of numerical modeling for Lake George, New York, hydrodynamics. These numerical simulations were generated to assess the impact of increasing the resolution of weather forecasts on the lake’s thermal state. This research focused on June 2017, when an increase of biological activity was associated to the deepening of the thermocline in the south of the lake. Increasing the resolution of the weather forecast led to a more accurate representation of the water temperature in the lake, including the deepening of the thermocline. The dataset was used in support of “The influence of weather forecast resolution on the circulation of Lake George, NY”.
Shrub influence on soil moisture, nutrients, temperature and species composition, 2019 - 2020.
Shrubification, the expansion and densification of shrubs, is occurring in arctic and alpine zones across the globe (Myers-Smith et al., 2011). This alteration is primarily driven by warming temperatures (Elmendorf et al., 2012b, 2012a), and can have major consequences for the existing vegetation (Anthelme et al., 2007; Pajunen et al., 2011; Venn et al., 2014) and for nutrient pools (Sturm et al., 2005; DeMarco et al., 2014) due to the abiotic and biotic effects of shrubs. Shrubs accumulate snow which insulates the ground during the winter and provides more moisture later in the season (Liston et al., 2002). During the summer, shrubs provide shade and wind protection. Additionally, shrubs can increase the soil nitrogen (N) pool through their high input of plant material into the soil (DeMarco et al., 2014). These small-scale climatic and soil alterations have important consequences for plant community dynamics in the arctic and alpine. Influence of Atmospheric Air Plasma Pre-Treatment of Veneers on the Mechanical Properties and Stability of Beech Plywood
<p>Wood-based sheet materials such as plywood, fiberboard, particleboard, and oriented strain board find applications in civil engineering, building technology, furniture manufacturing and many more. All these materials rely strongly on an effective bond formation between the resin and the wood base material, which gives rise to their mechanical performance and stability, as well as their resistance to moisture and liquids. In our study, we present the use of a commercial atmospheric air plasma system, which we used for the pretreatment of veneers of common beech (<em>Fagus sylvatica</em> L.) wood before formation of plywood boards. Plasma treatment parameters were optimized following the change in water contact angle. Two different stacking patterns were used for plasma-treated veneers. The time stability of the plasma modification was investigated by forming a second set of plywood boards 70 hours after plasma treatment of the respective veneers. The influence of the plasma treatment on mechanical properties was studied via bending and shear strength of the four sets of plasma-treated boards in comparison to a plywood out of the same veneer without plasma treatment. Water and moisture resistance were tested through water immersion and surface water resistance tests. Further, confocal laser scanning microscopy was used to determine changes of the surfaces’ morphologies.</p>

Swiss public's acceptance and sustainability perceptions of food produced with chemical, digital and mechanical weed control measures and the influence of information source on technology perception in agriculture
<p><span>This data was obtained from an online survey conducted with the Swiss public from the two biggest language regions (German and French) in Switzerland. The survey was conducted in February 2023. Participants were recruited through a professional panel provider and quotas were used for age, gender and language region. The final sample contained </span><span>542 respondents. </span><span>In the first part of the survey, respondents provided basic sociodemographic information. In the second part, their sustainability perceptions regarding four different weed management practices (full-surface spraying, hoeing machine, spot spraying and precise spraying) were investigated. Respondents were then assigned to one of five information source groups, in which information on a hoeing and a milking robot was presented, using 5 different information sources (male/female farmer, male/female scientist, no source). Technology perception was assessed using several questions and aspects. Finally, respondents answered several questions assessing their attitudes towards the perception of farmers, food technology neophobia, chemophobia and the importance of naturalness. The survey can be used and adapted to different contents, aiming to investigate public perception of smart farming technologies and the influence of information sources on technology perception. </span></p>
