Global climatology of light-absorbing particle deposition on snow

<p><strong>Description</strong></p> <p>Light-absorbing particles (LAPs) deposited at the snow surface significantly reduce its albedo and strongly affect the snow&nbsp;melt dynamics. To better quantify the spatial variability of LAP deposition on snow, Gaillard et al. (2024) have generated a&nbsp;global climatology of LAP deposition on snow. It combines a climatological dataset of LAP deposition rates (Black Carbon&nbsp;(BC) and dust) over the period 1979-2015 (Zhao et al., 2018) with a global dataset of snow cover (Romanov, 2017) to obtain&nbsp;a climatology of LAP deposition rates on snow. The climatology is accompanied by the 25th and 75th percentiles of LAP&nbsp;deposition rates on snow to quantify the inter-annual variability of LAP deposition on snow.&nbsp;</p> <p>The data are distributed in a NetCDF file (<em>climato_tot_publish_v2.nc</em>). More details about the dataset and the file format are given in the file <em>readme_climatology_v2.pdf</em>.&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

ATom: Light-Absorbing Metallic Aerosols, Single Particle Soot Photometer, 2016-2018

This dataset provides mass mixing ratios and number density of light-absorbing metallic aerosols (LAM) in the size range 180-1290 nm obtained with the NOAA Single Particle Soot Photometer (SP2) during the four deployments of the NASA Atmospheric Tomography (ATom) airborne mission from 2016-2018. The NOAA SP2 detects light absorbing aerosols, such as black carbon (BC), via laser-induced incandescence to provide real-time in situ quantification of refractory aerosol mass and number density. The percent of LAM aerosols attributed to anthropogenic iron oxides (FeOx) by mass is also provided.
