Managing Crop Yield Risk at the Kellogg Biological Station, Hickory Corners, MI (2022 to 2023)
Dataset Abstract As farmers adapt to changing climate, they modify practices and technologies to manage evolving risk. Adaptive changes may be as small as adjusting a crop insurance coverage level or as large as investing in an irrigation system. Farmer attitudes toward risk and their subjective perceptions of the evolving probability distributions of crop yields drive adaptation decisions. To understand climate change adaptation behavior by farmers, we undertook the study “Elicitation and Estimation of Risk Preference and Subjective Probabilities to Understand Farmer Decisions on Climate Change Adaptation.” We interviewed 44 Michigan corn and soybean farmers to elicit mathematical expressions of their risk attitudes. During the interviews, each completed two sets of lottery choices, the first using 25 general risky gambles and the second using 18 risky gambles in a crop farming context that enable econometric estimation of risk attitudes (using variants of Expected Utility Theory). Next, they answered questions about corn yield probability distributions over the past ten years and the next ten years (triangular distributions of minimum, most likely, and maximum values) with no water management, irrigation, tile drainage, and drought-resistant seed. After that, they reported on water management investments that they have made in past and intend to make in future. Finally, they provided background information about themselves and their farms. This study (MSU Study ID: STUDY00007871) was submitted to the Michigan State University Institutional Review Board (IRB) by principal investigator Scott Swinton. On July 5, 2022, it was determined to be exempt under 45 CFR 46.104(d) 3(i)(B). Data collection took place during September 2022 through March 2023. LAGOS - Chlorophyll, TP, and water color summer epilimnetic concentrations and lake and catchment data for inland lakes in WI, MI, NY, and ME – a subset of lake data from LAGOSLimno v.1.040.1
This dataset includes lake total phosphorus (TP), true water color, and chlorophyll a (CHLa) concentrations from summer, epilimnetic water samples and is a subset of the larger LAGOS database (Lake multi-scaled geospatial and temporal database, described in Soranno et al. 2015). LAGOS compiles multiple, individual lake water chemistry datasets into an integrated database. We accessed LAGOSLIMNO version 1.040.0 for lake water chemistry data and LAGOSGEO version 1.02 for lake catchment geographic data. In the LAGOSLIMNO database, lake water chemistry data were collected from individual state agency sampling and volunteer programs designed to monitor lake water quality. Water chemistry analyses follow standard lab methods. In the LAGOSGEO database geographic data were collected from national scale geographic information systems (GIS) data layers. Lake catchments, defined as 'The area of land that drains directly into a lake, and into all upstream-connected, permanent streams to that lake exclusive of any upstream lake watersheds for lakes greater than or equal to 10 ha that are connected via permanent streams', were delineated for lakes greater than or equal to 4 ha. Lake-stream connectivity type was assigned to lakes greater than or equal to 4 ha using GIS tools that use the National Hydrology Dataset (See Soranno et al. 2015 for LAGOS geographic processing steps). A subset of lake and geographic data was created to examine spatial variation in TP and water color relationships with CHLa across broad geographic extents using spatially-varying coefficient models with a Bayesian framework. Lakes were selected that had complete records for summer epilimnetic total TP, true water color, and CHLa. In addition we selected lakes with surface area greater than or equal to 4 ha and less than 10,000 ha to exclude very small and very large lakes from the analyses. This package includes tree growth-ring widths for increment cores collected from a long-term 'macroplot' established in old-growth hemlock-northern hardwoods forest at the Huron Mts. of northern MI. Tree demographic monitoring data for the entire ca. 3.0 ha macroplot are available in the EDI package edi.1416.1. In 1994 and 1995, increment cores were taken for all 'core-able' trees greater than ~ 10 cm diameter for a subsection of the macroplot about 1 ha in area, along with some additional Tsuga canadensis trees beyond that 1 ha section. Cores are NOT cross-dated. See Methods for more details. This data-package may be cross-referenced to the demographic data in edi.1416.1 using stem numbers.

In 1993, 1994 and 1995, increment cores were taken for all 'core-able' trees greater than ~ 10 cm diameter for a subsection of the macroplot about 1 ha in area. Microcystin-LR (one of the toxic congeners of microcystin) exposure causes crayfish to forget previous fight outcomes as well as previous opponents, MI, 2025
Harmful algal blooms are increasing across the globe as a function of nutrient run off and climate change. While the study of the mechanisms that underlie the blooms themselves are abundant, the impact of the toxins produced by blooms needs more research. Crayfish are keystone species in aquatic habitats and rely on chemoreception for many of their ecosystem functions. Crayfish were placed in a fight arena for measure both the outcome and dynamics aspects of agonistic encounters. Then the loser of the fights were exposed to either controls or microcystin for four days. Afterwards, the crayfish fought either another unfamiliar opponent or the previous opponent. The data contained in this package has the concentrations of microcystin exposure, morphological data on the crayfish, and then behavioral data from the two different fights. The behavioral data has two categories: time spent at different levels of intensity and time it took the crayfish pair to reach a certain intensity.
Long-term (1935-2019) tree population data from remeasurements of a large network of permanent study plots in old-growth forest, Dukes Research Natural Area, Marquette Co., MI, USA
The Dukes Research Natural Area (Hiawatha National Forest, Marquette Co., MI) amounts to ca. 100 ha of minimally disturbed original forests, including a mix of mesic 'hemlock-northern hardwood' types and peaty wetlands dominated by several species of swamp conifers and black ash (Fraxinus nigra). The RNA hosts a regular grid of 250 0.2-acre (~0.08 ha) permanent monitoring (CFI) plots. This package includes tree censuses for subsets of CFI plots conducted in 1935, 1948, and 1974-1980, and repeated censuses with mapped stems from 1989 to 2019. This 84-year record constitutes one of the longest repeated-measurement, permanent-plot data-sets for old-growth temperate forest.

Water properties of Brownie Lake, MN and Canyon Lake, MI from 2015-2022
Depth profiles of water column chemical and physical properties were assessed with seasonal-scale frequency from two meromictic lakes in the upper Midwest, U.S.A. from 2015 to 2022. Brownie Lake in Minneapolis, MN and Canyon Lake in the Huron Mountains of MI both contain elevated hypolimnetic dissolved iron (i.e. “ferruginous”). Several parameters were routinely measured with deployable probes at meter or sub-meter resolution at the deepest location in each lake. Water samples were also collected for laboratory analysis.

warmXtrophic plant-soil interaction greenhouse experiment, Kellogg Biological Station, Hickory Corners, MI, 2021
Climate warming influences plant communities through both direct effects, such as changes in temperature, and indirect pathways mediated by changes in soil microbial communities. These microbe-mediated indirect effects may alter plant traits and ecosystem dynamics in ways that are often overlooked in studies focused solely on the direct impacts of warming. To test these microbe-mediated indirect effects, we used field-conditioned soil from a 7-year (2015-2021) warming experiment (warmXtrophic) in an early successional plant community in Hickory Corners, Michigan, USA at Michigan State University's Kellogg Biological Station Long-Term Ecological Research site. In a greenhouse during 2021, we assessed how warmed versus ambient soil inocula influenced plant growth and traits of two species: Trifolium pratense (red clover) and Phleum pratense (Timothy grass). We measured above, below, and total biomass, height, number of leaves, timing of germination, leaf % carbon and nitrogen, C:N ratio, specific leaf area (SLA), and greenness (a proxy for chlorophyll content). We also measured the timing of emergence of the cotyledon and first leaf for Trifolium pratense.

Tree recruitment from sites across Southern Michigan including the University of Michigan Biological Station, Pellston, MI (2022)
As a result of current climate change, flooding events are becoming more frequent and lasting longer, resulting in temporal floods in areas that have not historically experienced this disturbance. One critical aspect of forest dynamics that could be significantly impacted by increasing flooding is tree species recruitment. While adult trees may be able to survive temporary flooding, establishing seedlings with shallow root systems may not. A single flooding event could jeopardize decades of recruitment if seedlings are unable to survive the anaerobic conditions imposed by higher water levels. Despite the potential impact of flooding on forest dynamics, there is little information on seedling recruitment patterns after exposure to flooding. To understand how flooding conditions could possibly be impacting forest recruitment, we conducted a field observational study across seven temperate forests. We gathered data on seedling abundance and diversity in areas with signs of recent flooding, as well as in nearby control (dry) areas. Our results document the adverse effects flooding conditions have on temperate forest recruitment dynamics, providing insights into how tree recruitment might be impacted by shifts in flooding patterns.
