Perceived academic stress, hair and saliva cortisol concentrations, and their relationship with anthropometric measures associated with obesity in first-year medical students.
<p>Cortisol plays an important role between stress, weight gain, and the development of obesity. Therefore, we investigated the association between stress, eating behavior, cortisol, and anthropometric measures related to obesity in a sample of medical students. We determined cortisol concentrations by ELISA and related it to self-reported stress, eating behavior, and anthropometric measurements throughout the academic period. We report an increase in hair cortisol, higher self-reported stress scores, and BMI mainly in females. Finally, we found evidence of positive associations between capillary cortisol and BMI. Also, eating behavior is affected by perceived stress mainly in females.</p> <p>In this database, we provide weight variables, BMI, psychometric tests, and hormonal determinations.</p> <p><br> You can see two sheets in the Excel file. Sheet 1 includes the raw data and sheet 2 includes a description of each variable, as well as the bibliography (article or book) where each survey or protocol was obtained.</p> <p><br> In addition, the data specify the units of the hormonal variables, as well as the units of the anthropometric variables. Racism in Medicine: Impact of Discussion Among Medical Students
<p>Purpose</p> <p>This study evaluated the impact of the Racism in Medicine Summit on student perceptions of various topics related to racism in medicine. The Summit was organized at the Wayne State University School of Medicine (WSUSOM) to educate students, faculty and staff on how structural racism affects the residents of Detroit and the historical relationship between health care and vulnerable populations. The Summit aimed at providing context for what students in Detroit will encounter as physicians-in- training and the skills they will need to master while working within similar communities.</p> <p>Method</p> <p>Qualtrics surveys were created and distributed via email to attendees before and after the event. Responses were obtained via Likert scale and open-text questions.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A total of 342 out of 445 participants (77%) completed both the pre- and post-survey. Quantitative analysis in post-survey responses revealed more familiarity among participants regarding specific instances of racism in the history of medicine, greater extent of thinking the history of racism impacts present-day Detroit residents, greater extent of thinking that racism influences medical care and/or medical outcomes, and belief that racism is reflected in medical research, compared to pre-survey responses (p < 0.001). Participants also reported more often considering racial or societal influences when learning medicine and more knowledge of what they can do to combat racism as a student and physician (p < 0.001).</p> <p>Qualitative analysis revealed seven themes among participants: the history of racism in</p> <p>Powered by Editorial Manager® and ProduXion Manager® from Aries Systems Corporation</p> <p>medicine, personal reflection, racism in research, bias and microaggression, actions to take against racism, resources for anti-racist education, and racism in medical education.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Demonstrable changes in medical student attitude and awareness surrounding topics of racism and health care were achieved after the Racism in Medicine Summit. This can serve as a model for other medical schools to raise awareness about racism in medicine.</p>

Data for: Gender medicine teaching increases medical students' gender awareness: results of a quantitative online survey
<p><span><strong>Background</strong> </span></p> <p><span>Gender medical knowledge is insufficiently integrated into university teaching in Germany. Gender awareness represents a key competence to integrate this knowledge into one's medical practice. This study is the first survey of the gender awareness of medical students in Germany.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Methods</span> </strong></p> <p><span>From April to July 2021, a quantitative cross-sectional survey in an online format using the 'Nijmegen Gender Awareness in Medicine Scale' (2008) was conducted at four German universities (Charité Berlin, Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena, Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich, and the University of Cologne) with a varied implementation of teaching gender medicine. Students indicated their agreement or disagreement with assumptions and knowledge about the influence of gender in everyday medical practice (gender sensitivity), as well as gender role stereotypes towards patients and physicians (gender role ideology). </span></p> <p><strong><span>Results </span></strong></p> <p><span>The 750 included participants showed a relatively high gender sensitivity and low gender role stereotyping towards patients and doctors. The curricular implementation of gender medicine of the universities showed to have a significant influence on the students' gender sensitivity, as well as on their gender role stereotyping towards patients. Students who reported having taken classes in gender medicine showed significantly higher level of gender sensitivity. Cis-males showed significantly lower gender sensitivity and significantly higher gender role stereotyping.</span></p> <p><span><strong>Conclusion</strong> </span></p> <p><span>Implementation of gender medicine in the medical curriculum, attending courses on gender education and one's gender have a significant impact on medical students' gender competencies. These results support the need for structural integration of gender in medical education and gender trainings at medical schools in Germany.</span></p>
NOT JUST MOTIVATION, BUT ALSO SELF-REGULATED LEARNING AFFECTED THE ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OF INDONESIAN MEDICAL STUDENTS
<p>Introduction. Medical education is regarded as difficult college degrees and a stressful academic journey. This study aimed to elaborate the correlation between several internal factors that affect academic performance. Methods. 211 active students in UPN Veteran Jakarta Indonesia was filled the four questionnaires to measure SRL (self regulated learning), motivation, self-efficacy, and emotional intelligence. GPA was considered as the academic performance of students. Correlation tests were analysed by Pearson correlation test and multiple linear regression. Results. SRL scores were higher in the medium level than high or low level, on contrast, the other variables showed different trends. The variables showed significant correlation with GPA were SRL and motivation. Conclusion. This study examined several intrinsic factors affected GPA, with predominantly SRL and motivation influencing GPA more. Strengthening the self-efficacy and Emotional Intelligence might improve the academic performance of medical students</p>
