Data in Support of Effects of Urbanization and Forest Fragmentation on Atmospheric Nitrogen Inputs and Ambient Nitrogen Oxide and Ozone Concentrations in Mixed Temperate Forests.

Urban ecosystems around the globe experience greater atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition compared to rural areas and are particularly vulnerable to fragmentation due to land-use change. However, while the influences of urbanization and forest fragmentation on atmospheric inputs to temperate forests have been determined separately, the combined effects of the two changes on temperate forest ecosystems have yet to be assessed. To investigate these combined effects, we deployed throughfall collectors to measure atmospheric N inputs and passive samplers to measure nitrogen oxides (NOx) and ozone (O3) throughout the 2018 and 2019 growing seasons in seven temperate forest sites along an urbanization gradient from Boston to central Massachusetts. We found a positive relationship between the amount of impervious surface area surrounding each site (% ISA) and throughfall nitrate (NO3-) inputs at the forest edge, with urban edge NO3- inputs nearly double the rate at rural edge sites. There were higher rates of NO3- inputs in the rural forest interior than edge sites. Urban sites experienced significantly higher concentrations of NOx and O3 both in the interior and at the edge compared to rural sites. Atmospheric N inputs were significantly elevated in the early (May-July) compared to the late (August-November) growing season and concentrations of NOx and O3 were also elevated in the mid-growing season (June-September). Our results demonstrate that together, urbanization and forest fragmentation lead to greater rates of atmospheric N inputs and ambient pollutant concentrations of NOx and O3 in temperate forests of the northeastern U.S.

Data from: Cu-Al mixed oxide-catalysed multicomponent synthesis of gluco- and allofuranose-linked 1,2,3-triazole derivatives

<p><span>A series of carbohydrate linked-1,2,3-triazole derivatives were synthetized in good yields from glucofuranose and allofuranose diacetonides using as key step a three-component 1,3-dipolar azide-alkyne cycloaddition catalyzed by a Cu-Al mixed oxide. In this multicomponent reaction, Cu-Al mixed oxide/sodium ascorbate system serves as highly reactive, recyclable and efficient heterogeneous catalyst for regioselective synthesis of 1,4-disubstituted 1,2,3-triazoles. The reported protocol has significant advantages over classical CuI/DIPEA or CuSO<sub>4</sub>/sodium ascorbate conditions in terms of efficiency and reduced synthetic complexity. In addition, the selective deprotection of synthesized di-<i>O</i>-isopropylidene derivatives was also carried out leading to the corresponding mono-<i>O</i>-isopropylidene products in moderate yields. Some of the synthesized triazole glycoconjugates were tested for their <em>in vitro</em> antimicrobial activity using the disk diffusion method against Gram-positive bacteria (<i>Staphylococcus aureus</i> and <i>Bacillus subtilis</i>), Gram-negative bacteria (<i>Escherichia coli</i> and <i>Pseudomonas aeruginosa</i>), as well as fungus (<i>Aspergillus niger</i>) and yeast (<i>Candida utilis</i>). The results revealed that these compounds exhibit moderate to good antimicrobial activity mainly against Gram-negative bacteria. </span></p>

Flight training and dietary antioxidants have mixed effects on the oxidative status of multiple tissues in a female migratory songbird

<p>Birds, like other vertebrates, rely on a robust antioxidant system to protect themselves against oxidative imbalance caused by energy-intensive activities such as flying. Such oxidative challenges may be especially acute for females during spring migration, since they must pay the oxidative costs of flight while preparing for reproduction; however, little previous work has examined how the antioxidant system of female spring migrants responds to dietary antioxidants and the oxidative challenges of regular flying. We fed two diets to female European starlings, one supplemented with a dietary antioxidant and one without, and then flew them daily in a windtunnel for two weeks during the fall and spring migration periods. We measured the activity of enzymatic antioxidants (GPx, SOD, CAT), non-enzymatic antioxidant capacity (ORAC), and markers of oxidative damage (protein carbonyls and lipid hydroperoxides) in four tissues: pectoralis, leg, liver, and heart. Dietary antioxidants affected enzymatic antioxidant activity and lipid damage in the heart, and non-enzymatic antioxidant capacity in the pectoralis and protein damage in leg muscle. In general, birds fed less antioxidants appear to incur increased oxidative damage while upregulating non-enzymatic and enzymatic antioxidant activity, though these effects were strongly tissue-specific. We also found a significant diet x training interaction for enzymatic antioxidant activity in the leg, and strong trends for diet x training interactions for enzymatic antioxidant activity in the heart and liver. Flight-training may condition the antioxidant system of females to dynamically respond to oxidative challenges, and females during spring migration may shift antioxidant allocation to reduce oxidative damage.</p>

Single and mixed arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal species inocula have a different effect on the growth and oxidative stress defense in Lolium perenne exposed to phenol and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons

<p>Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are ubiquitous mutualistic plant symbionts which promote plant growth and protect them from abiotic stresses. Studies on AMF-assisted phytoremediation have shown that AMF can increase plant tolerance to the presence of hydrocarbon contaminants by improving plant nutrition status and mitigating oxidative stress. This work aimed to evaluate the impact of single-species or mixed-species AMF inocula, obtained from the contaminated environment (<i>Funneliformis caledonium</i>, <i>Diversispora varaderana</i>, <i>Claroideoglomus walkeri</i>), on a growth, oxidative stress (DNA oxidation and lipid peroxidation) and activity of antioxidative enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase, peroxidase) in <i>Lolium perenne</i> cultured in a substrate contaminated with 0/0 - 30/120 mg phenol/polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) kg<sup>-1</sup>. The assessment of AMF resistance to the presence of contaminants was based on mycorrhizal root colonization, spore production, the level of oxidative stress and antioxidative activity in AMF spores. In contrast to the mixed-species AMF inoculum, single AMF species significantly enhanced the growth of host plants cultured in the contaminated substrate. Their effect on the level of oxidative stress and the activity of antioxidative enzymes in plant tissues differed between the AMF species. Changes in the level of oxidative stress and the activity of antioxidative enzymes in AMF spores in response to contamination also depended on AMF species. Although, the concentration of phenol and PAHs had a negative effect on the production of AMF spores, low (5/20 mg phenol/PAHs kg<sup>-</sup>1) and substrate (15/60 mg phenol/PAHs kg<sup>-1</sup>) contamination stimulated the mycorrhizal colonization of roots. Among the studied AMF species, <i>F. caledonium</i> was the most resistant to phenol and PAHs and showed the highest potential in plant growth promotion. Adverse effects of mixed AMF inoculum on <i>L. perenne</i> growth might result from the competitive associations between the AMF species and excessive development of <i>C. walkeri</i>. Presented results might contribute to the development of functionally customized strategies of AMF-assisted phytoremediation with indigenous AMF inocula, adapted to form mycorrhizal associations in the presence of contaminants, which might enhance phytoremediation more effective than commercial AMF inocula.</p>

"The current-voltage characteristics and partial pressure dependence of defect controlled electrochemical reactions on mixed conducting oxides"

<p>Oxygen exchange reaction rates on mixed conducting perovskite electrodes are described as a function of defect concentrations, see <a href="http://elchinfo.cta.tuwien.ac.at/pmwiki/uploads/Profiles/Schmid_JESoc.pdf">The current-voltage characteristics and partial pressure dependence of defect controlled electrochemical reactions on mixed conducting oxides</a> for a detailed description.</p> <p>Here, (exchange) currents, polarization resistances, <span class="math-tex">\(p_{\rm{O_2}}\)</span> dependencies and Tafel-slopes are calculated as function of&nbsp;<span class="math-tex">\(p_{\rm{O_2}}\)</span> and overpotential for different possible reaction mechnisms. The defect concentrations are taken from the model material La<sub>0.6</sub>Sr<sub>0.4</sub>FeO<sub>3-<span class="math-tex">\(\delta\)</span></sub>, and listed in Brouwer_Bias.csv as a function of&nbsp;<span class="math-tex">\(p_{\rm{O_2}}\)</span> and overpotential.</p> <p>Model 7 describes a molecular mechanisms wothout adsorption limitation, model 8 includes adsorption limitation. Likewise Models 10 and 11 describe atomic mechanisms without and with adsorption limitation, respectively.</p> <p>Overpotentials are listed in V, oxygen partial pressures in bar, defect concentrations in defects per unit cell and currents are in arbitrary units as are resistances.</p> <p>Partial pressure and overpotential dependencies (p and n slopes) are given as <span class="math-tex">\(\frac{\partial \ln j}{\partial\ln p_{\rm{O_2}}}\)</span>(unitless) and <span class="math-tex">\(\frac{\partial \ln j}{\partial\eta}\)</span>(/V), and likewise with resistances instead of currents (rp and rn slopes), respectively.</p> <p>The source code for this project is available at: https://github.com/AlexSchmid22191/EIS_R_Sim</p>

Dataset generated in support of nitric oxide assimilation by Heterosigma akashiwo when acclimated to growth on nitrate, ammonium, or a mix of nitrate and ammonium

<p>This dataset includes primary data generated during our investigation of the effects of competing nitrogen sources on the assimilation of nitric oxide (NO) into algal biomass by the harmful algal species, <em>Heterosigma akashiwo</em>. <em>H. akashiwo </em>was grown in continuous culture on artificial seawater and provided with either nitrate, ammonium or nitrate plus ammonium as a sole source of nitrogen. Cultures were spiked with NO (100 &micro;M), or NO<sub>3</sub><sup>-</sup>, or NH<sub>4</sub><sup>+ </sup>at concentrations equal to 10% ambient levels. Controls were spiked with an equal volume of water. Samples were collected for RT-qPCR analysis of gene expression at 15 and 60 minutes after spiking. Additional samples were collected for analysis of NR enzyme activity at 2 hours after spiking, and again at 4 hours and 24 hours to evaluate assimilation of NO into biomass.</p>
