<p>This data was collected during the study entitled &quot;Multispecies interactions shape the transition to multicellularity.&quot;</p> <p>We explored how interspecific competition shapes the emergence of multicellularity in an experimental system with two yeast species, <em>Saccharomyces cerevisiae</em> and <em>Kluyveromyces lactis</em>, where multicellularity evolves in response to selection for faster settling ability. The experimental design consisted of a 19-day evolution experiment, where cocultures and monocultures of unicellular <em>S. cerevisiae </em>and <em>K. lactis</em> were propagated daily with and without selection for settling (6 replicates each). Cocultures included initial frequencies of 25%, 50%, and 75% <em>K. lactis</em>. Differential growth rates and selection coefficients during the sweep of multicellular <em>K. lactis</em> were calculated, and species frequencies (%) were visualized.</p> <p>We also completed a 20-day evolution experiment with cocultures of multicellular <em>S. cerevisaie</em> and <em>K. lacti</em>s, with each species beginning as rare, transferred with and without settling (6 replicates each). Differential growth rates during the invasion-from-rare experiment were calculated and visualized.</p> <p>To assess the competitive dynamics of the two species before and after the transition to multicellularity, competition assays were performed, with species&rsquo; frequencies determined before and after either 24 hours of growth or 7 minutes of settling when each species began as rare. These assays were repeated for unicellular and multicellular isolates. We also obtained 48-hour growth curves for monocultures and 50% cocultures (10 replicates each) and determined the intrinsic growth rate (r) and carrying capacity (K) for each population. Population densities of each species were also measured before and after 24 hours of growth on each species&rsquo; spent media.</p>

Data from: Negative interactions and virulence differences drive the dynamics in multispecies bacterial infections

<p>Bacterial infections are often polymicrobial, leading to intricate pathogen-pathogen and pathogen-host interactions. There is increasing interest in studying the molecular basis of pathogen interactions and how such mechanisms impact host morbidity. However, much less is known about the ecological dynamics between pathogens and how they affect virulence and host survival. Here we address these open issues by co-infecting larvae of the insect model host <em>Galleria mellonella</em> with one, two, three, or four bacterial species, all of which are opportunistic human pathogens. We found that host mortality was always determined by the most virulent species regardless of the number of species and pathogen combinations injected. In certain combinations, the more virulent pathogen simply outgrew the less virulent pathogen. In other combinations, we found evidence for negative interactions between pathogens inside the host, whereby the more virulent pathogen typically won a competition. Taken together, our findings reveal positive associations between a pathogen's growth inside the host, its competitiveness towards other pathogens, and its virulence. Beyond being generalizable across species combinations, our findings predict that treatments against polymicrobial infections should first target the most virulent species to reduce host morbidity, a prediction we validated experimentally.</p>

Beyond pairwise interactions: multispecies character displacement in Mexican freshwater fish communities

Competition has long been recognized as a central force in shaping evolution, particularly through character displacement. Yet research on character displacement is biased as it has focused almost exclusively on pairs of interacting species, while ignoring multispecies interactions. Communities are seldom so simple that only pairs of species interact, and it is not clear if inferences from pairwise interactions are sufficient to explain patterns of phenotypes in nature. Here we test for character displacement in a natural system of freshwater fishes in western Mexico that contains up to four congeneric species of the genus Poeciliopsis. We analyzed body shape differences between populations with different numbers of competitors while accounting for confounding environmental variables. Surprisingly, we found evidence for convergent character displacement in populations of P. prolifica, P. viriosa and P. latidens. We also found that the convergence in body shape was not consistently in the same direction, meaning that when three or more competitors co-occurred, we did not find more extreme body shapes compared to when there were only two competitors. Instead, when three or more competitors co-occur, body shape was intermediate to the shape found with a pair of species or no competitor present. This intermediate shape suggests that evolution in multispecies communities likely occurs in response to several competitors, rather than to simple pairwise interactions. Overall, our results suggest that competition among multiple species is more complex than simple pairwise competitive interactions.
