Shortgrass prairie (Colorado, USA) and northern mixedgrass prairie (Wyoming, USA) species traits

<p>These data support Mueller et al. 2023, entitled "Coordination of leaf, root, and seed traits shows the importance of whole plant economics in two semiarid grasslands."</p> <p>Uncertainty persists within trait-based ecology, partly because few studies assess multiple axes of functional variation and their effect on plant performance. For 55 species from two semiarid grasslands, we quantified: i) covariation between economic traits of leaves and absorptive roots, ii) covariation among economic traits, plant height, leaf size, and seed mass, and iii) relationships between these traits and species' abundance. Pairs of analogous leaf and root traits were at least weakly positively correlated (e.g., SLA and SRL). Two pairs of such traits, N content and DMC of leaves and roots, were at least moderately correlated (r&gt;0.5) whether species were grouped by site, taxonomic group and growth form, or life history.  Root diameter was positively correlated with seed mass for all groups of species except annuals and monocots.  Species with higher LDMC tended to be more abundant (r=0.63). Annuals with larger seeds were more abundant (r=0.69). Compared to global-scale syntheses with many observations from mesic ecosystems, we observed stronger correlations between analogous leaf and root traits, weaker correlations between SLA and leaf N, and stronger correlations between SRL and root N.  In dry grasslands, plant persistence may require coordination of above- and belowground traits, and dense tissues may facilitate dominance.</p>

Data from: Nonbreeding season survival of northern bobwhite in northeastern Colorado

<p>Northern bobwhites have experienced population declines in Colorado and range-wide. Estimating vital rates can provide clues to factors limiting population growth rate. Although recent estimates of breeding season survival in the northwest corner of the northern bobwhite range are available, there have been no recent studies on nonbreeding season survival. We used radio-telemetry to estimate nonbreeding season (Oct–Mar) survival of northern bobwhites at two study sites in northeastern Colorado during winter 2019–2020 and 2020–2021. Based on our sample of 157 bobwhites, we found that survival was highly variable between years and was negatively affected by colder daily minimum temperatures and deeper snow depths. Seasonal (6-month) survival during the first year was 0.219 (SE = 0.040) and during the second year was 0.006 (SE = 0.005). We found no evidence that sex, age, or study site influenced survival, and very weak support for an effect of body mass. During our study, there were two extreme winter weather events, during which we found unusually high numbers of non-predation mortality. Overall, northern bobwhite nonbreeding season survival in the northwest corner of their range appears to be generally similar to other regions, except during extreme winter weather events, which resulted in high mortality. We encourage managers to create or maintain vegetation characteristics that will provide shelter from winter weather while also providing abundant food in close proximity.</p>

Data from: Limitations to recovery following wildfire in dry forests of southern Colorado and northern New Mexico, USA

Climate warming is contributing to increases in wildfire activity throughout the western U.S., leading to potentially long-lasting shifts in vegetation. The response of forest ecosystems to wildfire is thus a crucial indicator of future vegetation trajectories, and these responses are contingent upon factors such as seed availability, interannual climate variability, average climate (e.g., 30-year normals), and other components of the physical environment. To better understand variation in forest resilience to fire across vulnerable dry forests, we performed field surveys of conifer seedling abundance in 15 recent (1988-2010) wildfires and characterized temporal variation in seed cone production and seedling establishment. We then modeled post-fire seedling abundances for each species at a 30 m resolution using downscaled climate data, monthly water balance models, and canopy cover of surviving mature conifers. Widespread ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) seed cone production occurred at least twice following each fire surveyed and pulses of conifer seedling establishment coincided with years of above-average moisture availability. Ponderosa pine and Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) seedling abundances were higher on more mesic sites and adjacent to surviving trees, though there were also important interspecific differences, likely attributable to drought- and shade-tolerance. We estimated that 41.8% (for ponderosa pine) and 68.5% (for Douglas-fir) of the total area burned did not meet tree density thresholds consistent with historical densities for each species. Spatial models demonstrated that the availability of seed trees (particularly in the interior of large, high-severity patches) limited seedling abundances in many areas, but 30-year average actual evapotranspiration and climatic water deficit also limited abundances on marginal sites. A better understanding of the limitations to post-fire recovery is likely to aid in developing adaptation and mitigation strategies through the improvement of models of future ecosystem change throughout the western U.S.

Measurements of volatile organic compounds in the Northern Colorado Front Range in 2023

<p>This dataset was collected by Colorado State University (CSU) students during the spring 2023 and fall 2023 semesters as part of a course in the Department of Atmospheric Science (ATS-716: Air Quality Characterization). Measurements of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were collected in Northern Colorado, using a low-cost sensor called SENSIT SPOD. The SENSIT SPOD sensor package combines wind field and air pollutant concentration measurements to detect emission plumes and locate the source of those emissions. The sensor measures non-speciated, uncalibrated concentrations of a subset of VOCs. The sensor also measures temperature, relative humidity, pressure, and wind direction and speed. The SPODs were used to trigger the collection of whole air samples during periods with higher concentrations of VOCs. Air samples from the triggered canisters were analyzed at CSU using Gas Chromatography (GC) to provide a measure of approximately 50 VOCs. An integrated canister was used to measure the average concentration of approximately 50 VOCs over a one-week period. After collection, sample air in the canisters was analyzed at CSU using Gas Chromatography (GC).</p>
