Data from a Large-Scale Experiment to Evaluate the Effects of Trapping to Control Muskrats (Ondatra zibethicus) in The Netherlands
<p>This data set supports the publication 'A Large-Scale Experiment to Evaluate the Effects of Trapping to Control Muskrats (Ondatra zibethicus) in The Netherlands' by Daan Bos, Emiel van Loon, Erik Klop and Ron Ydenberg. (the paper was accepted for publication in Wildlife Society Bulletin in 2020)</p> <p>The Muskrat is an invasive species in Europe and in the Netherlands muskrat burrowing can compromise the integrity of dykes and hence poses a public safety threat. For that reason a control programme has been in effect since the arrival of the species in 1941. To investigate the relation between catch and effort and enhance prediction models, a large randomized controlled experiment was designed and conducted from 2013 till 2016. The publication by Bos et al. (2020) analyses the experimental results and here we present and document the experimental data. See the readme.md file for further information.</p>
Presence of Echinococcus multilocularis and Taenia taeniaformis in muskrats (Ondatra zibethicus)
<p>This dataset describes the presence of <em>Echinococcus multilocularis</em> and <em>Taenia taeniaformis </em>in muskrats (<em>Ondatra zibethicus</em>) in Flanders, Belgium.</p> <p>From 1994 onward, muskrats from Flanders have been autopsied with the aim of understanding their demography. In 2008, we first detected EM in a muskrat from Lessines (Wallonia), just across the border with Flanders. Therefore, from 2009 onward, all available muskrats from Flanders and neighbouring regions were collected and examined.</p> <p>The dataset contains the following variables:</p> <ul> <li><code>date</code>: YYYY-MM-DD</li> <li><code>province</code>: Flemish province where the muskrat was captured, for locations outside of Flanders only a municipality is provided</li> <li><code>municipality</code>: the municipality where the muskrat was captured</li> <li><code>weight</code>: the weight of the animal in grams</li> <li><code>sex</code>: either M: male or F: female</li> <li><code>taen</code>: Infection with <em>Taenia taeniaformis</em>, scored as: <ul> <li>0: No <em>T. taeniaformis </em>present</li> <li>1: Few <em>T. taeniaformis </em>present</li> <li>2: Multiple <em>T. taeniaformis </em>present</li> <li>3: A high number of <em>T. taeniaformis </em>present</li> </ul> </li> <li><code>EM</code>: Infection with <em>Echinococcus multilocularis</em>, scored as: <ul> <li>N: negative, no parasites present</li> <li>P: positive, parasite present</li> <li>?: unsure</li> </ul> </li> </ul>

Seasonal changes of vomeronasal responses to chemosensory cues associated with circulating estrogen in the female muskrats (Ondatra zibethicus)
<p>In numerous animals, the vomeronasal organ (VNO) is a crucial chemosensory organ that receives chemical signals, which is involved in species-specific behaviors, including social and sexual behaviors. Muskrat (<em>Ondatra</em> <em>zibethicus</em>) has a sensitive VNO system that detects specific chemicals such as pheromones and hormones and induces seasonal breeding behaviors. The purpose of this study is to investigate the distributions and expression patterns of vomeronasal receptor type-1 (V1R), vomeronasal receptor type-2 (V2R), estrogen receptors α and β (ERα and ERβ) in the female muskrats' VNO during the different periods. V1R, V2R, ERα and ERβ were found in sensory epithelial cells, non-sensory epithelial cells and lamina propria cells of the female muskrats' VNO. V2R and ERα mRNA levels in the VNO of the breeding period declined sharply, in comparison to those of the non-breeding period, while V1R and ERβ mRNA levels were detected reversely. Additionally, a transcriptomic study in the VNO identified that differentially expressed genes might be related to estrogen signals and metabolic pathways. These findings suggested that the seasonal structural and functional changes of VNO in the female muskrats within different reproductive statuses, and estrogen regulated its function through binding to ERα and ERβ in the female muskrats' VNO.</p>
