Supporting Data for "Coherent superpositions of three states for phosphorous donors in silicon prepared using THz radiation"
<p>Supporting data for the publication "Coherent superpositions of three states for phosphorous donors in silicon prepared using THz radiation", describing experimental results from Figures 4-7. The data are in .csv format; columns and units for each file are described in the relevant readme file. The data are given in sufficiently compact states for a reader of the paper to reproduce the figures.</p> <p>Spectral data presented are related to their interferograms by simple Fourier Transform methods. The source interferograms are derived from explicit records of oscilloscope traces, which are verbose and inefficient. Consequently, these raw data files are not included in the dataset. Raw oscilloscope traces will be made available by the authors on request.</p>
Phosphorous fertilization and soil pH affect the growth of deciduous trees in a temperate hardwood forest
<p>To better understand how a forest’s response to P limitation and acidic deposition can change over time, we added P, limestone to raise pH, and a cross-treatment where both P and limestone were added to 3 different northeastern Ohio forest stands over a 12-year period. Internally, we call this experiment APEX, which stands for Acid Precipitation EXperiment. We tracked diameter at breast height (DBH) of the trees annually, conducted foliar nutrient analyses, and collected tree roots to assess treatment impacts on mycorrhizal colonization. We analyzed our dataset in three sections: the first 6 years after manipulation, the latter 6 years, and the entire 12-year period. These sections allowed us to compare differences between early responses to manipulation and later responses. The R code included here shows how these sections of data were analyzed using linear mixed effect models and Tukey post hoc tests (with the R packages lme4 and multcomp, respectively) and graphed (with the package ggplot2). The three R code files include analyses of 1) litter biomass and chemistry (APEX_leaf_litter_R_code.R), 2) ectomycorrhizal (EM) and arbscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal colonization and root biomass estimates from trees associated with these mycorrhizal types (APEX_mycorrhizal_roots_R_code.R), and 3) relative basal area increment that was calculated for different tree species and mycorrhizal association types using DBH measurements (APEX_RBAI_R_code.R). All input csv files are included here.</p>

Carbon-Phosphorous Lyase Enzyme Activity Profiles in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre
<p>These datasets contain oceanic enzyme activity measurements of Carbon-Phosphorus (C-P) lyase, a catalytic enzyme pathway, which cleaves C-P bonds, allowing microbial utilization of phosphonates as a phosphorous source. These activity measurements were made in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre. Samples were collected in the top 1000 m of the water column on KM1717, KM1821, and KM2001 cruises and in the top 225 m of the water column on FK180310-2.</p>

Results of statistical analyses of the comparison of phosphorous measurement laboratory methods
<p>The study in the related article compares the phosphorus (P) analysis methods of ammonium lactate (AL), Mehlich 3 (M3); water extraction (P-WA(P)&P-WA(PO<sub>4</sub>)), cobalt hexamine (CoHex) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF, as an estimate of total soil P). The ratio of the P-content/XRF was calculated and compared with the whole dataset first. Based on the comparison of all the data there were significant differences between the results of P-WA(P) and P-WA(PO<sub>4</sub>) vs M3 and AL, CoHex vs M3 and CoHex vs AL methods (p<0.001). The influencing factors were also analysed for a more in-depth understanding of their role (CaCO<sub>3</sub>-content, pH, soil texture and clay content). The file contains the results of the statistical analyses.</p>
Electromagnetic immune phosphor-tipped fibre-optic thermometers
<p>Calibration traceability can be broken where there are significant, unquantified uncertainties. Thermometry in harsh environments using electrical sensors, such as thermocouples or resistance thermometers, can be unpredictably affected by electro-magnetic sources. For this application, phosphor based temperature sensors with fibre-optic connection have been made following two different approaches – phosphor decay time changes and phosphor emission spectral changes – and tested by bombardment with high energy electrons and by measurements in large magnetic fields. Both sets of tests showed good immunity to exposure, and with magnetic field tests significantly better than a thermocouple. Phosphor thermometry therefore has potential to retain traceability in situations where conventional sensors might fail.</p>

Competition and co-association, but not phosphorous availability, shape the benefits of phosphate solubilising root bacteria for maize (Zea mays).
<p>Predicting the conditions under which rhizobacteria benefit plant growth remains challenging. Here we tested the hypothesis that benefits from inoculation with phosphate-solubilising rhizobacteria will depend upon two environmental conditions: phosphate availability and competition between bacteria. Maize-associated rhizobacteria with varying phosphate solubilisation ability were used in experiments in soil, sterilised soil and gnotobiotic microcosms under conditions of varying orthophosphate availability, while we manipulated intensity of competition by varying the number of isolates in plant inocula. Growth promotion by microbes did not depend on phosphate availability but was affected by interactions between inoculants: beneficial effects of one <em>Serratia </em>isolate were detectable only when plants were inoculated with a single strain and beneficial effects of a competition sensitive <em>Rhizobium </em>was only detectable in sterilised soil or in microcosms inoculated with single strains. Moreover, microcosm experiments suggested that facilitation of a parasitic isolate, not competitive interactions between bacteria, prevented plants from gaining benefits from a potential mutualist. Competition and facilitation affected colonization of plants in microcosms but growth promotion by <em>Serratia</em> was more affected by inoculation treatment than culturable densities on roots<em>.</em> Experimental manipulation of seed inocula can reveal whether plant growth stimulation is robust with respect to competition, as well as the ecological strategies of different rhizobacteria. From an applied perspective, phosphate solubilisation may not provide the mechanism for bacterial growth promotion but may indicate mutualistic potential due to phylogenetic associations. Importantly, benefits to plants are vulnerable to interactions between rhizobacteria and may not persist in mixed inoculations.</p>

Soil phosphorous: Long-Term Nitrogen Deposition During Grassland Succession
The purpose of this experiment is to measure how initially disturbing an area and adding nitrogen over a long time will affect the number of species, the type of species present, the amount of annual growth, and the change from year to year in the growth of each species in a plant community which is also relieved of grazing by large and small mammals. This experiment is conducted within fields (A, B, and C) which were initially low in soil nutrients. The ground was disturbed by thoroughly disking the area prior to establishment of the experiment. There are 8 different levels of nitrogen addition with other nutrients added to ensure that nitrogen remains the limiting nutrient, and a control which receives no nutrients. Nitrogen fertilizer (NH4NO3) is applied twice per year, once in early May and once in late June. There are six replicates of each treatment per field. The treatments were randomly assigned to plots of size 4 by 4 meters. The plots are in 6 plot by 9 plot grids with 1 meter aisles between plots. The plot grids are enclosed by a fence to keep out mammalian herbivores. Gophers are trapped and removed as they appear. In the spring of 1992, subexperiments E097 and E098 were established. E097 is in fields A and C where randomly selected plots within each treatment no longer receive fertilizer. E098 is in field B where randomly selected plots within each treatment are burned. Note that the design of E002 is similar to E001 except E002 was thoroughly disked prior to establishment.
Soil phosphorous: Effects of Various Nutrients and Water on Vegetation
This experiment was conducted within the fenced areas of fields A, B, C, and D. The purpose of this experiment was to determine the effect of various nutrients on vegetation. There were eight different nutrients and a control. The different nutrients were N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Na, H2O, and a combination of trace metals. There were 36 plots in each field, 4 replicates of the 9 treatment levels. The plots were 1 meter by 4 meters and were laid out in a 4 by 9 grid. The grid was divided into 4 quarters and treatments were assigned with a randomized block design.
Soil phosphorous: Nitrogen Addition and Dynamics of Recovery from Cessation of N Addition
This experiment was established on top of E002 in fields A and C. In the spring of 1992, 3 randomly chosen replicates of each nutrient treatment of experiment E002 were chosen to receive no more fertilizer. For a description of these plots, see E002.
