Evaluating the Prevalence and Impact of Chronic Ankle Insta-bility in Collegiate Athletes across Various Sports: A Cross-Sectional Study.
<p>In the cross-sectional study "Evaluating the Prevalence and Impact of Chronic Ankle Instability in Collegiate Athletes across Various Sports," researchers sought to quantify how widespread chronic ankle instability (CAI) is among collegiate athletes and to determine its effects on athletic performance and training. The study involved 385 athletes from diverse sports, including basketball, soccer, track and field, swimming, and other sports, and revealed that CAI was present in nearly half of the participants. The investigation highlighted significant disparities in prevalence rates among different sports, with basketball and soccer athletes exhibiting higher rates of CAI. Furthermore, the study assessed the impact of CAI on several performance metrics such as training intensity, performance scores, and recovery times, finding that athletes with CAI generally showed lower performance levels and longer recovery times. These results emphasize the need for targeted preventive and rehabilitative strategies to mitigate the effects of CAI and support athlete health and performance.</p>

CHILDHOOD OBESITY IN URBAN AND RURAL INDIA: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW AND META-ANALYSES OF PREVALENCE STUDIES
<p><strong><span>Background:</span></strong><span> Childhood obesity has become a pressing global public health issue, particularly in low- and middle-income countries like India. This systematic review aims to investigate the prevalence of childhood obesity and its associated risk factors in urban and rural regions of India.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Methods:</span></strong><span> A comprehensive systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, and Scopus databases to identify relevant English-language studies published within the past decade. Inclusion criteria included studies conducted in India, focusing on children and adolescents aged 0-18, and reporting either the prevalence of childhood obesity or related risk factors. Ten studies, comprising both cross-sectional and quantitative research designs, met these criteria.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Results:</span></strong><span> The findings reveal a significant disparity in childhood obesity prevalence between urban and rural areas of India. Urban regions exhibit notably higher rates, with a pooled prevalence estimated at 9.0% (95% CI: 2.0 to 17), compared to 4.0% (95% CI: 4.0 to 5.0) in rural areas. Risk factors associated with childhood obesity in urban settings include unhealthy dietary habits, limited physical activity, higher income levels, parental education, and attendance at private schools. In rural areas, gender, age, and household size emerged as potential risk factors.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Discussion:</span></strong><span> These findings underscore the urgent need for geographically tailored interventions to address the urban-rural disparities in childhood obesity. Lifestyle-oriented strategies promoting healthier dietary patterns and increased physical activity are essential. Gender-inclusive programs targeting both boys and girls are crucial. Future research should consider regional and cultural diversity to design more effective public health responses.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Conclusion:</span></strong><span> This systematic review provides valuable insights into the prevalence and risk factors of childhood obesity in India. It highlights the necessity for customized interventions and lifestyle adjustments to combat this escalating public health challenge and reduce disparities in health outcomes.</span></p>

Assessing the prevalence of Female Genital Schistosomiasis and comparing the acceptability and performance of health worker-collected and self-collected cervical-vaginal swabs using PCR testing among women in North-Western Tanzania: the ShWAB study
<p>Female genital schistosomiasis (FGS) is a severe neglected disease, caused by infection with <em>Schistosoma haematobium</em>. The WHO has prioritized the improvement of diagnostics for FGS and previous studies have explored the PCR-based detection of <em>Schistosoma</em> DNA on genital specimens, with encouraging results. We aimed to determine the prevalence of FGS among women living in an endemic district in North-western Tanzania, applying and preliminary comparing self-collected and operator-collected cervical-vaginal swabs followed by PCR, and to assess the acceptability of these sampling procedures.</p>
Industry funding of patient organisations in the United Kingdom: A retrospective study of commercial determinants, funding concentration and disease prevalence
<p><strong>Objectives</strong> – To assess the relationship between UK-based patient organisation funding and companies' commercial interests in rare and non-rare diseases in 2020.</p> <p><strong>Design</strong> – Retrospective analysis of the value and volume of payments from pharmaceutical companies to patient organisations in the UK matched with data on the conditions supported by patient organisations and drugs in companies' approved portfolios and research and development pipelines.</p> <p><strong>Setting</strong> – UK.</p> <p><strong>Participants</strong> – 74 pharmaceutical companies making payments to 341 UK-based patient organisations.</p> <p><strong>Main outcome measures</strong> – Alignment between the commercial interests of pharmaceutical companies and the disease area focus of patient organisations; difference in the volume and value of payments to patient organisations broken down by prevalence of conditions; industry funding concentration, measured as the number of companies funding each patient organisations, the share of overall industry funding coming from each contributing company and the share of industry funding of each organisation comprised by the single highest payments.</p> <p><strong>Results</strong> – 1,422 payments were made by 74 companies to 341 patient organisations. Almost all funds (90%) from pharmaceutical companies were directed to patient organisations that are aligned with companies' approved drug portfolios and research and development pipelines. Despite rare diseases affecting less than 5% of the UK population, more than 20% of all payments were directed to patient organisations which target such conditions. Patient organisations focusing on rare diseases relied on payments from fewer companies (p-value = 0.0031) compared to organisations focusing on non-rare diseases.</p> <p><strong>Conclusions</strong> – Companies predominantly funded patient organisations operating in therapeutic areas relevant to companies' portfolio or drug development pipeline. Patient organisations focusing on rare diseases received more funding relative to the number of patients affected by these conditions and relied more heavily on payments from fewer companies compared to organisations targeting non-rare diseases. Increased independence of patient organisations could help avoiding conflicts of interest.</p>

Prevalence and correlates of overweight and obesity among adolescents in northeastern China: a cross-sectional study
<p>Abstract Objectives: To estimate the prevalence of overweight/obesity among adolescents and to evaluate the associated factors in this group in Changchun City, northeastern China.</p> <p>Methods: A cross-sectional study of 1955 adolescents aged 11–18 years was conducted in Changchun City, using stratified cluster sampling. Parents and caregivers of children completed the questionnaires as requested without objection; the questionnaire included demographic characteristics and anthropometric parameters. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to analyze the relationship between overweight /obesity and related factors.</p> <p>Results: In total, the prevalence of overweight was 12.7% (male 17.4%; female 10.1%), and the prevalence of obesity was 4.9% (male 8.8%; female 3.1%) in Changchun, Jilin Province. The prevalence of overweight and obesity was higher in males than that in females (P <0.001). Multivariate logistic regression showed that overweight and obesity were significantly associated with male sex (OR=1.91, 95% CI: 1.48-2.47), eating fresh fruits more than two days per week (OR=1.41, 95% CI: 1.09-1.84), eating quickly (OR=1.37, 95% CI: 1.06-1.78). The students who were not picky (OR=0.69, 95% CI: 0.53-0.90) were less likely to be overweight. And adolescents whose father were overweight or obese (OR=0.67, 95% CI: 0.52-0.86) or mother were overweight or obese (OR=0.72, 95% CI: 0.52-0.99) were less likely to be overweight.</p> <p>Conclusion: The prevalence of overweight and obesity among adolescents in Changchun was high in recent years. The prevalence of overweight and obesity among males was higher than that among females. Sex, dietary habits (weekly frequency of fruit consumption, picky eating and slowness in eating) and parental weight were important factors for overweight and obesity in adolescents. Further research should be conducted on the health of adolescents in China and further intervention measures should be implemented to reduce the prevalence of overweight/obesity.</p>
