A Comparison of Recreational and Survey-Grade Side-Scan Sonar Systems in Mapping Reservoir Fish Habitat in 3 Southwest Ohio Reservoirs
Littoral zone aquatic habitat is thought to play an important driver of aquatic organism population dynamics, but historically has been difficult to obtain at the whole waterbody scale because it is costly and time-consuming to collect with traditional aquatic habitat sampling methods. Here we used side-scan sonar to quantification of habitat features over large areas using two levels of equipment: recreational (consumer-grade) and professional (survey-grade). Our goal was to compare performance of the different side-scan sonars by analyzing their ability to map shoreline habitat features (wood, vegetation, and substrate) in three southwest Ohio reservoirs that contain the range of habitat features of interest to fisheries biologists. We used a low-cost Lowrance Active Imaging 3-in-1 system (≈$2,000 USD) recreational sonar and an EdgeTech 6205 system (≈$150,000 USD) survey-grade sonar to collect imagery along the shoreline of three reservoirs in Ohio. Using imagery from each system, We manually delineated patches of submerged woody debris, standing timber, aquatic vegetation, and benthic substrate in GIS. We also compared the size of uniquely identifiable submerged wood from paired imagery to understand potential biases between the systems.

In the face of climate change and exhaustive exercise: The physiological response of an important recreational fish species
<p>Cobia (<i>Rachycentron canadum</i>) support recreational fisheries along the U.S. mid- and south-Atlantic states and have been recently subjected to increased fishing effort, primarily during their spawning season in coastal habitats where increasing temperatures and expanding hypoxic zones are occurring due to climate change. We therefore undertook a study to quantify the physiological abilities of cobia to withstand increases in temperature and hypoxia, including their ability to recover from exhaustive exercise. Respirometry was conducted on cobia from Chesapeake Bay to determine aerobic scope, critical oxygen saturation, ventilation volume, and the time to recover from exhaustive exercise under temperature and oxygen conditions projected to be more common in inshore areas by the middle and end of this century. Cobia physiologically tolerated predicted mid- and end-of-century temperatures (28-32°C) and oxygen concentrations as low as 1.7-2.4 mg l<sup>-1</sup> suggesting that they may be a climate change winner. Our results indicated cobia can withstand environmental fluctuations that occur in coastal habitats and the broad environmental conditions their prey items can tolerate. However, at these high temperatures some cobia did suffer post exercise mortality. It appears cobia will be able to withstand near future climate impacts in coastal habitats like Chesapeake Bay, but as conditions worsen, catch-and-release fishing may result in higher mortality than under present conditions.</p>
The negative association of sea lice from fish farms on recreational fishing catches of Atlantic salmon
<p>The question of whether and to what extent sea-louse (<em>L. salmonis)</em> infestations from salmon farms influence wild Atlantic salmon survival has been subject to sustained scientific debate and political controversy. Documenting the population-level effects of sea lice on wild salmon remains inherently challenging. We employ comprehensive sea-lice data and recreational catch data from Norway to assess the impact of farm sea-louse infestations on wild salmon catches in different production areas (PAs). Our analysis finds a significant correlation between declines in wild Atlantic salmon catches and increasing amounts of adult female sea lice per km<sup>2</sup>. The effect is most pronounced in PA 4 on the west coast of Norway, an area within the government's "traffic light" management system where out-migrating salmon smolts are deemed to face high exposure to louse-induced mortality risk. Our model predicts below-average catches when the total sea louse load exceeds the government's limit of 0.1 average adult female sea louse per farmed fish within some production areas. Furthermore, our results indicate that the risk of below-average catches increases by approximately 47% when salmon farms exceed this limit (estimated risk ratio of 1.47, 95 % CI [1.10, 1.96]).</p> <p><em>Synthesis and Applications</em>: Our study expands the existing body of evidence demonstrating a negative association between fish farming and the ecosystem services provided by wild salmon stocks. It has important implications for aquaculture management. First, it shows that farm sea lice directly affect peoples, rights holders, and interest groups, such as landowners and anglers, who rely on viable populations of wild salmon. Second, it suggests that a >0.1 sea lice limit may be insufficient to prevent subpar catches in some areas. Furthermore, in the context of allowing further growth in farmed salmon biomass, setting absolute sea-louse limits for entire production areas may be a more effective regulatory instrument than setting average lice limits per farmed fish. Our findings contribute to advancing a scientific basis for setting appropriate louse limits on farm and area scales.</p>

Harvesting wild animals may exert size-independent selection pressures on a range of morphological, life history, and behavioral traits. Most work so far has focused on selection pressures on life history traits and body size as morphological trait. We studied here how recreational fishing selects for morphological traits related to body shape, which may correlate with underlying swimming behavior. Using landmark-based geometric morphometrics, we found consistent recreational fishing-induced selection pressures on body shape in two recreationally exploited marine fish species. We show that individuals with larger-sized mouths and more streamlined and elongated bodies were more vulnerable to passively operated hook-and-line fishing independent of the individual's body size or condition. While the greater vulnerability of individuals with larger mouth gapes can be explained by the direct physical interaction with hooks, selection against streamlined and elongated individuals could either involve a specific foraging mode or relate to underlying elevated swimming behavior. Harvesting using passive gear is common around the globe, and thus, size-independent selection on body shape is expected to be widespread potentially leaving behind individuals with smaller oral gapes and more compact bodies. This might have repercussions for food webs by altering foraging and predation.

Novel trophic subsidies from recreational angling transform the trophic ecology of freshwater fishes
<p>Angling is a globally popular leisure activity. There are over 31 million anglers in Europe, many of which target species of the Cyprinidae family in lowland freshwater ecosystems using methods generally involving bait (e.g. groundbaits, seeds and pellets), with large bait inputs possible in periods of high angling activity. While these bait inputs act as novel trophic subsidies ('angling subsidy'), substantial knowledge gaps remain on their influence on freshwater food-webs, including on fish trophic niche size and position. The effects of angling subsidies on the trophic ecology of cyprinid fish populations and their macroinvertebrate prey resources were investigated in field studies comparing waters of high angling activity ('subsidised fisheries') versus low angling activity ('non-subsidised fisheries'), and complemented by a pond experiment using two cyprinid species in subsidy absence/presence. Methods were based on stable isotope analysis, with angling subsidies being δ13C enriched and, generally, δ15N depleted compared to macroinvertebrate prey resources. In the subsidised fisheries, while there were minimal influences of the baits on macroinvertebrate stable isotope values, the effects of the subsidies on all fish species were to substantially δ13C enrich and δ15N deplete their isotopic niches. However, patterns of inter-specific niche divergence remained similar between the species in subsidy presence. In the pond experiment, there was strong isotopic association between the two fish species and macroinvertebrate putative prey in subsidy absence. In treatments that then exposed both species to angling subsidies, their stable isotope values shifted to enriched δ13C. Synthesis and application: Where angling activity is high, angling baits can provide strong trophic subsidies to freshwater fish, but with minimal effects on other trophic levels. Their regular input into freshwaters can provide some substantial benefits for fish (e.g. increased growth rates) and fisheries (e.g. elevated carrying capacity, higher catch rates), but can also increase nutrient enrichment and potentially raise ethical and fish welfare concerns. Thus, in allowing the use of these baits, especially in relatively high quantities, managers must balance the benefits they can deliver to fish and fisheries versus the adverse effects their use can have on freshwater organisms and ecosystem functioning.</p>

No-take marine protected areas (MPAs) are assumed to enhance fisheries catch via the "spillover" effect, where biomass is exported to adjacent exploited areas. Recent studies in spearfishing fisheries suggest that the spillover of gear-naïve individuals from protected to unprotected sites increases catch rates outside the boundaries of MPAs. Whether this is a widespread phenomenon that also holds for other gear types and species is unknown. In this study, we tested if the distance to a Mediterranean MPA predicted the degree of vulnerability to hook and line in four small-bodied coastal fish species. With the assistance of underwater video recording, we investigated the interaction effect of the distance to the boundary of an MPA and species type relative to the latency time to ingest a natural bait, which was considered as a surrogate of fish naïveté or vulnerability to fishing. Vulnerability to angling increased (i.e., latency time decreased) within and near the boundary of an MPA for an intrinsically highly catchable species (Serranus scriba), while it remained constant for an intrinsically uncatchable control species (Chromis chromis). While all of the individuals of S. scriba observed within the MPA and surrounding areas were in essence captured by angling gear, only one fifth of individuals in the far locations were captured. This supports the potential for the spillover of gear-naïve and consequently more vulnerable fish from no-take MPAs. Two other species initially characterized as intermediately catchable (Coris julis and Diplodus annularis) also had a shorter latency time in the vicinity of an MPA, but for these two cases the trend was not statistically significant. Overall, our results suggest that an MPA-induced naïveté effect may not be universal and may be confined to only intrinsically highly catchable fish species. This fact emphasizes the importance of considering the behavioural dimension when predicting the outcomes of MPAs, otherwise the effective contribution may be smaller than predicted for certain highly catchable species such as S. scriba.

<p>SPSS Dataset for journal article titled ""Understanding leisure constraints in tourism context: An investigation of Russian tourists' constraints in participating in recreational fishing in Finland", SPSS dataset".<br> <br> <strong>Article abstract</strong><br> Research on leisure constraints brings insight on consumer preferences and benefits tourism service providers and developers. Understanding why people seek or avoid destination activities, such as recreational fishing, helps to develop strategies to address these constraints and to modulate participation. This case study utilizes the conceptual model of leisure constraints and extends leisure constraints research to an international setting, by focusing on Russian tourists’ recreational fishing activities in Finland. It also explores the customers’ views on the role of water quality in fishing activity. A panel data survey with 457 Russian tourists visiting Finland has showed that leisure constraints vary across recreational fishing participants, non-participants and potential participants. While Russian tourists, who have been fishing in Finland, barely express any constraints, intrapersonal and structural constraints related to knowledge about Finnish fishing environment and information about service providers received the highest ratings among non-participants and potential participants. The language barrier has become the most highly rated constraint across all groups. While females are generally more constrained than males, a closer look to gender differences among non-participants and potential participants shows that males are more constrained across several statements. This case study contributes to the leisure constraints literature, particularly applying the constraints framework to the context of international tourism and to water quality.</p>
