Science Communication Webinar Series: Taking Risks in Science Communication
<p>Blue-Action are coordinating a series of webinars on climate science communication in 2020. These are aimed at early-career researchers, but anyone who wishes to engage people with their research at any stage will find them valuable.</p> <p>This webinar was delivered on 18th September 2020 by <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/mcoath/?originalSubdomain=uk">Martin Coath</a>, who is a Senior Affiliated Researcher at the University of Lapland. Martin is an experienced science communicator, and here explains how sometimes you need to take risks to make an impact. </p>

Risk factors for non-communicable diseases in Bangladesh: Findings of the population-based cross-sectional national survey 2018
<p><span><strong><span>Objectives:</span></strong> To determine the national prevalence of risk factors of non-communicable diseases (NCD) in the adult population of Bangladesh. </span></p> <p><span><strong><span>Design: The study was a </span></strong>population-based national cross-sectional study.</span></p> <p><span><strong><span>Setting:</span></strong> This study used 496 primary sampling units (PSUs) developed by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics. The PSUs were equally allocated to each division and urban and rural stratum within each division.</span></p> <p><span><strong><span>Participants:</span></strong> The participants were adults aged 18-69 years, who were usual residents of the households for at least six months, and stayed the night before the survey. Out of 9900 participants, 8185 (82.7%) completed STEP-1 and STEP-2, and 7208 took part in STEP-3. </span></p> <p><span><b>Primary and secondary outcome:</b> The prevalence of behavioral, physical, and biochemical risk factors of NCD. Data were weighted to generate national estimates.</span></p> <p><strong>Results: </strong>Tobacco use was significantly (p<0.05) higher in the rural (45.2%) than the urban (38.8%) population. Inadequate fruit/vegetable intake was significantly (P<0.05) higher in the urban (92.1%) than in the rural (88.9%) population. The mean salt intake per day was higher in the rural (9.0 gm) than urban (8.9 gm) population. Among all, 3.0% had no, 70.9% had 1-2, and 26.2% had ≥3 NCD risk factors. The urban population was more likely to have insufficient physical activity (AOR: 1.2, 95% CI: 1.2–1.2), obesity (AOR: 1.5, 95% CI: 1.5–1.5), hypertension (AOR: 1.3, 95% CI: 1.3–1.3), diabetes (AOR: 1.6, 95% CI: 1.6–1.6), and hyperglycemia (AOR: 1.1, 95% CI: 1.1–1.1).</p> <p><strong>Conclusions: </strong>Considering the high prevalence of the behavioral, physical, and biochemical risk factors, diverse population and high-risk group targeted interventions are essential to combat the rising burden of NCDs. </p>
Data from: Steller's jays assess and communicate about predator risk using detection cues and identity
Predators can vary in the risk they pose, depending upon the factors such as body size, maneuverability, hunting strategy, and diet. Prey can also detect predators with different senses, such as seeing, hearing, or smelling them. We presented wild Steller's jays (Cyanocitta stelleri annectens) with visual cues (robotic raptors) or acoustic cues (call playbacks) of 4 different raptors to test how they assess risk and how this influences their alarm calls. The assessment of risk from different predator cues varied with different species of raptors: Jays responded to sharp-shinned hawks (Accipiter striatus) with an increase in latency to resume foraging regardless of whether they were seen or heard, whereas latency responses to northern goshawks (Accipiter gentilis) were longer if they were seen versus if they were heard. Furthermore, Steller's jays altered the acoustic structure of their alarm calls depending on the species of raptor and whether they saw or heard them. These results demonstrate that Steller's jay's assessment of risk involves an interaction between predator identity and predator detection cue and in response, they alter their acoustically-simple alarm calls in surprisingly nuanced ways.
Blacklegged ticks, Ixodes scapularis, reduce predation risk by eavesdropping on communication signals of Formica oreas thatching ants
<p>Ticks spend most of their life inhabiting leaf litter and detritus where they are protected from sun but preyed upon by ants. Ants secrete chemical communication signals to coordinate group tasks such as nest defense. Ticks that avoid ant semiochemicals – as indicators of ant presence – would reduce predation risk by ants. We tested the hypotheses that (1) chemical deposits from the thatching ant <em>Formica</em> <em>oreas</em> deter blacklegged ticks,<em> Ixodes scapularis</em>, (2) deterrent semiochemicals originate from the ants' poison and/or Dufour's gland(s), and (3) tick-deterrent semiochemicals serve as alarm-recruitment pheromone components in <em>F. oreas</em>. In two-choice olfactometer bioassays, filter paper soiled with ant chemical deposits significantly deterred female and male ticks. Poison and Dufour's gland extracts deterred ticks in combination but not alone. Gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric analyses of gland extracts revealed formic acid as the major constituent in the poison gland and 8 hydrocarbons as constituents in the Dufour's gland. Synthetic formic acid and hydrocarbons deterred ticks only when combined. <em>F. oreas</em> workers sprayed both formic acid and hydrocarbons when distressed. A synthetic blend of these compounds elicited alarm-recruitment responses by <em>F. oreas</em> in behavioural bioassays. All results combined indicate that ticks eavesdrop on the ants' communication system.</p>

Data from: Characters matter: wow narratives shape affective responses to risk communication
Introduction <p class="MsoBodyText">Whereas scientists depend on the language of probability to relay information about hazards, risk communication may be more effective when embedding scientific information in narratives. The persuasive power of narratives is theorized to reside, in part, in narrative transportation. </p> Purpose <p>This study seeks to advance the science of stories in risk communication by measuring real-time affective responses as a proxy indicator for narrative transportation during science messages that present scientific information in the context of narrative.</p> Methods <p class="MsoBodyText">This study employed a within-subjects design in which participants (n=90) were exposed to eight science messages regarding flood risk. Conventional science messages using probability and certainty language represented two conditions. The remaining six conditions were narrative science messages that embedded the two conventional science messages within three story forms that manipulated the narrative mechanism of character selection. Informed by the Narrative Policy Framework, the characters portrayed in the narrative science messages were hero, victim, and victim-to-hero. Natural language processing techniques were applied to identify and rank hero and victim vocabularies from 45 resident interviews conducted in the study area; the resulting classified vocabulary was used to build each of the three story types. Affective response data were collected over 12 group sessions across three flood-prone communities in Montana. Dial response technology was used to capture continuous, second-by-second recording of participants' affective responses while listening to each of the eight science messages. Message order was randomized across sessions. ANOVA and three linear mixed-effects models were estimated to test our predictions.</p> Results <p>First, both probabilistic and certainty science language evoked negative affective responses with no statistical differences between them. Second, narrative science messages were associated with greater variance in affective responses than conventional science messages. Third, when characters are in action, variation in the narrative mechanism of character selection leads to significantly different affective responses. Hero and victim-to-hero characters elicit positive affective responses, while victim characters produce a slightly negative response.</p> Conclusions <p>In risk communication, characters matter in audience experience of narrative transportation as measured by affective responses.</p>
Data from the article: Narrative Risk Communication as a Lingua Franca for Environmental Hazard Preparation
<p>Incorporating narrative elements into risk communication may encourage preparation for environmental hazards in ways that scientific language alone does not. We integrate narrative theory, narrative persuasion, and risk theories into a Narrative Risk Communication Framework and then assess the effectiveness of character selection as a narrative mechanism in scientific risk communication as compared to conventional science messaging alone. We utilize a survey experiment with residents along the flood-prone Yellowstone River in Montana and analyze the resulting data with a parallel and serial mediation statistical model. We find that positive affective response mediates the influence of narratives featuring hero character language. Positive affective response appears to overcome the risk perception paradox both by circumventing rational analysis of risk and by shaping risk perception. Overall, the results suggest that inspirational hero language is superior to language of fear or victimization in encouraging preparation – an important lesson for practitioners working to help citizens prepare for environmental disasters.</p>
Supporting data for: Risk factors common to leading eye health conditions and major non-communicable diseases: A rapid review and commentary
<p><strong><span>Background</span></strong><span>: </span><span>To gain an understanding of the intersection of risk factors between the most prevalent eye health conditions that are associated with vision impairment and non-communicable diseases (NCDs).</span></p> <p><span><strong>Methods</strong>:</span><span> A</span><span> series of rapid reviews of reviews reporting on non-modifiable risk factors, age and sex, and modifiable risk factors, including social determinants, were conducted for five common eye health conditions that are the leading causes of vision impairment globally (refractive error including uncorrected refractive error, cataract, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy) and five prevalent NCDs (cancer, cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory disease, dementia, and depressive disorders). </span></p> <p><span><strong>Results</strong>: </span><span>Eye health conditions and NCDs share many risk factors. Increased age was found to be the most common shared risk factor, associated with increased risks of AMD, cataract, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, refractive error, cancer, cardiovascular disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and dementia. Other shared risk factors included smoking, obesity, alcohol consumption (mixed results), and physical activity was protective, though limited evidence was found for eye conditions. Social determinants are well documented as risk factors for NCDs.</span></p> <p><span><strong>Conclusion</strong>:</span><span> There is substantial overlap in common established risk factors for the most frequent vision-impairing eye conditions and leading NCDs. Increasing efforts should be made to integrate preventative and risk reduction interventions to improve health, with the greatest shared benefits for initiatives that aim to reduce smoking, improve diet, and promote physical activity.</span></p>
