Distribution and habitat use of juvenile Feather River salmonids: 25 years and ongoing of snorkel surveys
Since 1999, the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) has conducted annual snorkel surveys to monitor juvenile salmon on the Feather River. The objective of this data collection effort is to determine the relative abundance and distribution of rearing juvenile Chinook salmon and steelhead. A secondary objective is to collect baseline data for future monitoring programs associated with habitat restoration projects. Crews survey units within 20 sampling sections on the high flow (HFC) and low flow channel (LFC) between January and September and collect information on species, fish size, substrate, cover, and habitat type. This dataset represents an extensive time series that could be used to identify habitat conditions where juvenile Chinook salmon and steelhead occur and how these conditions have changed over time. These data were published to support the Healthy Rivers and Landscapes Program.

Overview The Central Valley Project Improvement Act (CVPIA) funds habitat improvement work in the Central Valley of California to increase salmonid populations in furtherance of meeting CVPIA fish doubling goals. This data package contains five datasets. Enclosure Study – Growth Data This dataset covers enclosure studies that examined salmonid growth rates in the Sacramento River and focused on assessing effectiveness of salmonid habitat improvement projects. Data was collected in July and August 2019 from project sites, constructed habitat project sites, and control sites where no treatment is planned. Six enclosures with juvenile Fall Run Chinook salmon from Coleman National Fish Hatchery were placed in each habitat type. Fish growth was tracked for approximately 6.5 weeks. Annual reports summarize the survey findings. Enclosure Study – Gut Contents Data This dataset covers enclosure studies that examined salmonid growth rates in the Sacramento River and focused on assessing effectiveness of salmonid habitat improvement projects. Data was collected in July and August 2019 from project sites, constructed habitat project sites, and control sites where no treatment is planned. Six enclosures with juvenile Fall Run Chinook salmon from Coleman National Fish Hatchery were placed in each habitat type. Enclosures remained in the river for approximately 6.5 weeks. At the end of the study, fish were euthanized, and we dissected their guts and enumerated the taxa found. Annual reports summarize the survey findings. Microhabitat Use Data This dataset covers salmonid microhabitat use conducted in the Sacramento River and focused on assessing effectiveness of salmonid habitat improvement projects. Surveys are conducted roughly monthly and include pre-project sites, constructed habitat project sites, and control sites where no treatment is planned. Captive-bred populations of a partially migratory salmonid fish are unlikely to maintain migratory polymorphism in natural habitats
Supplementation of wild populations with captive-bred individuals is often ineffective for boosting long-term productivity of wild populations. On the other hand, it remains unknown whether supplementation can act to maintain life-history variation in natural habitats, which is also important for the long-term persistence of populations and species. Partial migration, in which both migratory and resident individuals are maintained in a population, is commonly found across animal taxa. However, human-induced habitat fragmentation continues to cause rapid decline in a migratory phenotype among many natural populations. By using field and hatchery experiments, we here demonstrated that while migrants and residents could be maintained in captive environments, few fish became migrants in natural streams in red-spotted masu salmon Oncorhynchus masou ishikawae. Released captive-bred fish rarely reached the threshold body size necessary to become migrants in natural streams, presumably due to lower growth condition in natural than in captive environments. The decision to migrate is often considered a threshold trait in salmonids and other animal taxa. Our findings highlight the need for supplementation programs to acknowledge environmentally induced changes in life-history decisions for partially migratory species.
Forestry influences on salmonid habitat in the North Thompson River Watershed, British Columbia
<p>Freshwater ecosystems that support juvenile salmonids can be degraded by human pressures such as forestry. Forestry activities can alter water temperatures and the delivery and storage of water, nutrients, wood, and sediment in streams, resulting in changes to the habitat, growth, and survival of juvenile salmon. Previous research on forestry impacts on habitat has focused on small, intensively monitored coastal systems. Here we examined forestry impacts, watershed characteristics, physical habitat, and stream temperature for 28 midsized tributaries of the North Thompson River to examine relationships between forestry and juvenile coho stream habitat in interior watersheds. Forest harvest had a positive correlation to maximum summer stream temperature. Streams with 35% of the riparian area harvested since 1970 had maximum summer temperatures 3.7°C higher on average than those with 5% harvested. Stream gradient explained most of the variation in physical habitat and had negative correlations to pool cover, pool depth, and fine sediment cover. Taken together, these results indicate that watershed characteristics drive physical habitat, but forestry harvest can be a primary driver of water temperatures.</p>
