Data from: Gut microbiota composition and functionality are associated with REM sleep duration and continuous glucose levels
<p><span><strong>Context</strong>:</span><span> Sleep disruption is associated with poorer glucose metabolic control and altered gut microbiota in animal models.</span></p> <p><span><strong>Objective</strong>:</span><span> We aimed to evaluate the possible links among REM sleep duration, continuous glucose levels, and gut microbiota composition.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Design</span></strong><span>: This is an observational, prospective, real-life, cross-sectional case-control study. </span></p> <p><span><strong>Setting</strong>: </span><span>Tertiary Hospital recruiting healthy volunteers.</span></p> <p><span><strong>Patients or Other Participants</strong>:</span><span> One-hundred and eighteen (60 with obesity), middle-aged (39.1-54.8) subjects.</span></p> <p><span><strong>Intervention(s)</strong>:</span><span> Glucose variability and REM sleep duration were assessed by 10-day continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) (Dexcom G6®) and wrist-actigraphy (Fitbit Charge 3®), respectively</span></p> <p><span><strong>Main Outcome Measure(s)</strong>:</span><span>. Glucose variability was evaluated through standard deviation (SD), coefficient of variation (CV), and interquartile range (IQR). The percentage of time in range (% TIR), 126-139 mg/dL (TIR2), and 140-199 mg/dL (TIR3) were calculated. Shotgun metagenomics sequencing was applied to study gut microbiota taxonomy and functionality. </span></p> <p><span><strong>Results</strong>:</span><span> Increased glycemic variability (SD, CV, and IQR) was observed among subjects with obesity in parallel to increased % TIR2 and % TIR3. REM sleep duration was independently associated with the % TIR3 (β=-0.339; p<0.001) and glucose variability (SD, β=-0.350; p<0.001). Microbial taxa from Christensenellaceae family (Firmicutes phylum) were positively associated with REM sleep and negatively with glucose continuous monitoring levels, while bacteria from Enterobacteriacea family and bacterial functions involved in iron metabolism showed opposite associations. </span></p> <p><span><strong>Conclusions</strong>:</span><span> Decreased REM sleep duration was independently associated with a worse glucose profile. The associations of species from Christensenellaceae and Enterobacteriaceae families with REM sleep duration and continuous glucose values suggest an integrated picture of metabolic health.</span></p>
Sleep duration, sleep quality, and their association with hypertension of petroleum workers
<p><strong>Objective </strong></p> <p>Explore Sleep duration, sleep quality, and their association with hypertension of petroleum workers.</p> <p><strong>Design</strong></p> <p>Setting and participants Multistage, random-cluster sampling design was used to select study samples, conducted a cross-sectional survey 1,500 prtroleum workers in 6 oil field bases in Karamay, Xinjiang. Unified blood pressure test by occupational physicians at the central hospital. Excluding 53 unfinished questionnaires and 27 unfinished blood pressure tests, 1420 participants were finally included as the subjects.</p> <p><strong>Outcomes</strong></p> <p>Main outcome measures were defined by dividing the referral process into three phases: (1) Ascertainment of hypertension; (2) Subjective sleep status was evaluated by the standard Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI); (3) The logistic regressions analysis were performed to evaluate the associations of sleep duration and sleep quality with hypertension.</p> <p><strong>Results </strong></p> <p>First, short sleep duration(OR=1.64, 95%CI=1.16-2.31) and poor sleep quaity(OR=3.35, 95%CI=2.40-4.67)) exerted a statistically significant effect on hypertension. Second, stratified analysis, (1) stratified by gender, Short sleep duration and poor sleep quality in female and male can increase the risk of hypertension, the OR values of female were 2.05 (95%CI:1.35-3.12) and 5.59 (95%CI:3.67-8.49), respectively. The OR values of male were 2.00 (95%CI:1.20-3.34) and 2.37 (95%CI:1.42-3.95), respectively (2) stratified by age, Among short sleepers, adults aged 30-44 years had higher adjusted odds of hypertension (OR: 2.19, 95% CI: 1.34-3.59) than older adults aged 45-65 years (OR: 2.70, 95% CI:1.60-4.54). Among poor sleepers, the risk of hypertension increasing with age, the OR values were: 3.43(95%CI: 1.52-7.74); 4.06(95%CI: 2.48-6.62); 4.35(95%CI: 2.60-7.27). (3) Stratified by shift work, we observed slightly increased relations of hypertension prevalence with the extension of shift work compared with non-shift workers, the OR (95% CI) were 2.28(1.20-4.35) and 3.86(2.08-7.15) for shift workers with short sleep duration and poor sleep quality, respectively.</p> <p><strong>Conclusion</strong></p> <p>Short sleep duration and poor sleep quality are associated with hypertension prevalence of petroleum workers.</p>

Data from: Sleep duration, midday napping and sleep quality and incident stroke: the Dongfeng-Tongji cohort
Objective: To investigate the associations of sleep duration, midday napping and sleep quality, and change in sleep duration with risk of incident stroke and stroke subtypes. Methods: Among 31750 participants aged 61.7 years on average at baseline from the Dongfeng-Tongji cohort, we used Cox regression models to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for incident stroke. Results: Compared with sleeping 7-<8 h/night, those reporting longer sleep duration (≥9 h/night) had a greater risk of total stroke (HR, 1.23; 95% CI, 1.07-1.41), while shorter sleep (<6 h/night) had no significant effect on stroke risk. The HR (95% CI) of total stroke was 1.25 (1.03-1.53) for midday napping >90 min vs 1-30 min. The results were similar for ischemic stroke. Compared with good sleep quality, those with poor sleep quality showed a 29%, 28% and 56% higher risk of total, ischemic, and hemorrhagic stroke, respectively. Moreover, we observed significant joint effects of sleeping ≥9 h/night and midday napping >90 min (HR, 1.85; 95% CI, 1.28-2.66), and sleeping ≥9 h/night and poor sleep quality (HR, 1.82; 95% CI, 1.33-2.48) on risks of total stroke. Furthermore, compared with persistently sleeping 7-9 h/night, those persistently slept ≥9 h/night or switched from 7-9 h to ≥9 h/night had a higher risk of total stroke. Conclusions: Long sleep duration, long midday napping and poor sleep quality were independently and jointly associated with higher risks of incident stroke. Persistently long sleep duration or switch from average to long sleep duration increased the risk of stroke.
