A temporally consistent 8-day 0.05° gap-free snow cover extent dataset over the Northern Hemisphere for the period 1981–2019

<p>Northern Hemisphere (NH) snow cover extent (SCE) is one of the most important indicator of climate change for its unique surface property. However, short temporal coverage, coarse spatial resolution, and different snow discrimination approach among published SCE products hampers its detailed studies. Using the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer Surface Reflectance (AVHRR-SR) Climate Data Record (CDR) and several ancillary datasets, this study generated a temporally consistent 8-day 0.05&deg; gap-free NH terrestrial SCE product for the period 1981&ndash;2019 as part of the Global LAnd Surface Satellite dataset (GLASS) product suite. This process consistent of five steps. First, a decision tree algorithm with multiple threshold tests was applied to detect SCE from daily AVHRR-SR CDR. Second, we merge two existing daily SCE products to take advantage of their spatial coverage. Third, an aggregation process was used to detect the maximum SCE in each 8-day periods. Forth, the GLASS SCE was generated with the help of snow cover probability climatology. Fifth, the validation process was carried out to evaluate the quality of GLASS SCE. Validation results by using 562 Global Historical Climatology Network stations during 1981&ndash;2017 (r=0.61, p&lt;0.05) and MOD10C2 during 2001&ndash;2019 (r=0.97, p&lt;0.01) proved that the GLASS SCE product is credible in snow cover frequency monitoring. Moreover, cross-comparison between GLASS SCE and surface albedo during 1982&ndash;2018 further confirmed its values in climate changes studies.</p> <p>The GLASS SCE data set provides binary maps of snow cover for the Northern Hemisphere from September 1981 to the December 2019. The data are organized by year and provided in GeoTIFF formats. The gridcells were flagged as &ldquo;0&rdquo; if classified as &quot;Non-snow&quot;, &quot;1&quot; if retrieved from AVHRR satellite observations, and &quot;2&quot; if&nbsp;&nbsp;filled by IMS snow climatology.</p> <p>Spatial Coverage: N: 90, S: 0, E: 180, W: -180<br> Spatial Resolution: 0.05 deg x 0.05 deg<br> Samples = 7200<br> Lines = 1800<br> Temporal Coverage: September 1981 to December 2019<br> Temporal Resolution: 8-day</p>

Modelling snowpack bulk density using snow depth, cumulative degree-days and climatological predictor variables -- data set

<p>This file constitutes the data set containing the snow course survey, North American Regional Reanalysis (NARR)-derived degree-day indices, and climatological variables data used to conduct the analysis, and generate the figures and tables in the manuscript titled &quot;Modelling snowpack bulk density using snow depth, cumulative degree-days and climatological predictor variables&quot; by Andras J. Szeitz and R. Dan Moore. The manuscript was submitted for publication in the journal &#39;Hydrological Processes&#39;.</p> <p>Due to the size of the NARR data files used to derive the air temperature time series for each snow course location, we recommend acquiring them from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration&#39;s data portal directly (<a href="https://psl.noaa.gov/data/gridded/data.narr.html">https://psl.noaa.gov/data/gridded/data.narr.html</a>).</p> <p>Likewise, the ClimateNA software application used to extract the climatological variables for each snow course location can be obtained from the Centre for Forest Conservation Genetics, Department of Forest and Conservation Sciences, UBC, directly (<a href="https://climatena.ca/">https://climatena.ca/</a>).</p>

Ensemble calculations of "Snow Days" from EURO-CORDEX data for Europe

<p><strong>Climate Index: </strong>Snow Days</p> <p><strong>Definition:</strong> Annual average number of days that the daily precipitation is equal to or greater than 1mm and the maximum temperature is below 4&deg;C.</p> <p><strong>Additional information:</strong> The dataset is based on an ensemble of EURO-CORDEX model simulations of daily near-surface maximum temperature. ABoVE: Last Day of Spring Snow, Alaska, USA, and Yukon Territory, Canada, 2000-2016

This dataset provides the last day of spring snow cover for most of Alaska and the Yukon Territory for 2000 through 2016. The data are based on the MODIS daily snow cover fraction product (MODSCAG) and are provided at 500-m resolution. Pixels in the daily snow cover fraction grids from April 1 through July 31 were flagged as "Snow" if the snow fraction exceeded 0.15, resulting in a time series of binary daily snow cover grids for each year. The annual last day of spring snow for each pixel was identified by day of the year ranging from 91 (April 1) to 183 (July 2).

Global EASE-Grid 8-day Blended SSM/I and MODIS Snow Cover, Version 1

This data set comprises global, 8-day Snow-Covered Area (SCA) and Snow Water Equivalent (SWE) data from 2000 through 2008. Global SWE data are derived from the Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I) and are enhanced with MODIS/Terra Snow Cover 8-Day Level 3 Global 0.05 degree Climate Modeling Grid (CMG) data. Global data are gridded to the Northern and Southern 25 km Equal-Area Scalable Earth Grids (EASE-Grids). These data are suitable for continental-scale time-series studies of snow cover and snow water equivalent.

This data set, ISLSCP II Snow-Free, Spatially Complete, 16 Day Albedo, 2002, contains 9 files for snow-free, spatially complete 16-day global black-sky albedos at local solar noon, white-sky albedos and quality information based on MODerate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Collection 4 Albedo Products (MOD43B3). Data are provided for 7 spectral bands and 3 broad bands for a full year of MODIS data (2002). An ecosystem-dependent temporal interpolation technique was developed to fill any missing or seasonally snow-covered data in the official MOD43B3 albedo product. The resulting data set maintains the original resolution and data of the MOD43B3 product while replacing fill values to provide snow-free spatially complete maps.
