A Study on Organizational IT Security in Mobile Software Ecosystems Literature

<p>Information security is a key topic for most organizations. With the digital revolution, smartphones have become popular not only for personal use but also within organizations where many employees use them for business purposes. As smartphones are increasingly present in organizations, it is necessary to understand what recommendations the literature provides for the safe use of such devices, helping organizations to protect themselves from threats. ISO 27000 is a well-known standard for information security in a business context. It provides a set of controls that must be observed to ensure more secure organizational information. Therefore, the goal of this study is to identify which controls presented in ISO 27000, more specifically ISO 27001, are present in the Mobile Software Ecosystem (MSECO) literature. To do so, we conducted a systematic mapping review supplemented by a snowballing process to identify studies in the field of MSECO that have addressed any subject that is present in ISO 27001. We found that 34 out of the 114 ISO 27001 controls are covered by the MSECO literature. Also, some of the ISO sections (e.g., Asset Management) have not yet been explored in the MSECO literature. Our results can inspire future and further studies on the topic of MSECO information security.</p>

Investigating Transparency in Software Ecosystems

To do so, we reviewed the existing literature on scientific databases and digital libraries to map and analyze the state-of-the-art of transparency in SECO. As a main contribution, we provide a comprehensive overview of approaches, constraints, processes, and challenges related to transparency in SECO. This knowledge can help organizations, software developers, and researchers to adopt initiatives that contribute to the open flow of information during the opening of the SECO, engaging and attracting new actors to the common technology platform.</p>

Data from: Evaluating conservation and fisheries management strategies by linking spatial prioritisation software and ecosystem and fisheries modelling tools

1. Well-designed marine protected area (MPA) networks can deliver a range of ecological, economic and social benefits, and so a great deal of research has focused on developing spatial conservation prioritization tools to help identify important areas. 2. However, whilst these software tools are designed to identify MPA networks that both represent biodiversity and minimize impacts on stakeholders, they do not consider complex ecological processes. Thus, it is difficult to determine the impacts that proposed MPAs could have on marine ecosystem health, fisheries and fisheries sustainability. 3. Using the eastern English Channel as a case study, this paper explores an approach to address these issues by identifying a series of MPA networks using the Marxan and Marxan with Zones conservation planning software and linking them with a spatially explicit ecosystem model developed in Ecopath with Ecosim. We then use these to investigate potential trade-offs associated with adopting different MPA management strategies. 4. Limited-take MPAs, which restrict the use of some fishing gears, could have positive benefits for conservation and fisheries in the eastern English Channel, even though they generally receive far less attention in research on MPA network design. 5. Our findings, however, also clearly indicate that no-take MPAs should form an integral component of proposed MPA networks in the eastern English Channel, as they not only result in substantial increases in ecosystem biomass, fisheries catches and the biomass of commercially valuable target species, but are fundamental to maintaining the sustainability of the fisheries. 6. Synthesis and applications. Using the existing software tools Marxan with Zones and Ecopath with Ecosim in combination provides a powerful policy-screening approach. This could help inform marine spatial planning by identifying potential conflicts and by designing new regulations that better balance conservation objectives and stakeholder interests. In addition, it highlights that appropriate combinations of no-take and limited-take marine protected areas might be the most effective when making trade-offs between long-term ecological benefits and short-term political acceptability.

Investigating Conditioning Factors for Transparency in Software Ecosystems

<p>Supplementary material for the paper "Investigating Conditioning Factors for Transparency in Software Ecosystems", published in the Journal of Software Engineering Research and Development (JSERD).</p> <p>Software Ecosystems (SECO) are a set of actors interacting with a distributed market centered on a common technological platform to develop products and services. In this context, transparency allows third-party developers to learn processes and elements that integrate the SECO platform. This non-functional requirement impacts the coordination of developers and the management of requirements that emerge in SECO. Although it is an essential requirement, there is still a lack of a roadmap on what constitutes transparency in SECO. Thus, this article aims to characterize conditioning factors for transparency in SECO. To do so, we conducted a systematic mapping study (SMS) and a field study to identify and analyze such factors. After investigating the literature, we selected 23 studies to analyze the state-of-the-art about transparency in SECO. Next, we conducted interviews with 16 software developers to characterize the importance of conditioning factors for transparency identified in their interaction with GitHub, a platform to support project-based ecosystems. As results, we obtained a comprehensive view of solutions, conditioning factors, processes, and concerns related to transparency in SECO, whose discussion is centered on three main topics: access to information, communication channels, and requirements engineering. We also present a conceptual framework that structures all the knowledge about transparency in SECO obtained in both studies. Regarding implications for academia and industry, researchers can find a conceptual framework to be used as a foundation for systematic approaches to understanding transparency in SECO. Practitioners can find solutions and conditioning factors that help them to adopt initiatives to contribute to the open flow of information in a SECO and, thus, attract and engage new actors to a common technological platform.</p>

Exploring Developer Experience Factors in Software Ecosystems

<p><strong>Context: </strong>Developer experience (DX) plays a key role in developers' performance and their continued involvement in a software ecosystem (SECO) platform. While researchers and practitioners have recognized several factors affecting DX in SECO platforms, a clear roadmap of the most influential factors is still missing. This is particularly important given the direct impact on developers&rsquo; interest in SECO and their ongoing engagement with the common technological platform.<strong>&nbsp;</strong><strong>Goal:</strong> This work aims to identify key DX factors and understand how they influence software developers' decisions to adopt and keep contributing to a SECO. <strong>Methods: </strong>We conducted a systematic mapping study (SMS), analyzing 29 studies to assess the state-of-the-art of DX in SECO. Additionally, we conducted a Delphi study to evaluate the influence of 27 DX factors (identified in our SMS) from the perspective of 21 software developers to adopt and keep contributing to a SECO.&nbsp;<strong>Results:</strong> The factors that most strongly influence developers' adoption and ongoing contributions to a SECO are: "financial costs for using the platform", "desired technical resources for development", 'low barriers to entry into the applications market", and "more financial gains".<strong> Conclusion: </strong>DX is essential for the success and sustainability of SECO. Our set of DX factors provides valuable insights and recommendations for researchers and practitioners to address key DX concerns from the perspective of software developers.</p>

Giving Back: Contributions Congruent to Library Dependency Changes in a Software Ecosystem

<p>Abstract:&nbsp;</p> <p>Widespread adoption of third-party libraries for contemporary software development has led to the creation of large inter-dependency networks, where sustainability issues of a single library can have widespread network effects. Maintainers of these libraries are often overworked, relying on the contributions of volunteers to sustain these libraries.&nbsp;To understand these contributions, in this work, we leverage socio-technical techniques to introduce and formalise dependency-contribution congruence (DC congruence) at both ecosystem and library level, i.e., to understand the degree and origins of contributions congruent to dependency changes, analyze whether they contribute to library dormancy (i.e., a lack of activity), and investigate similarities between these congruent contributions compared to typical contributions. We conduct a large-scale empirical study to measure the DC congruence for the NPM ecosystem using 1.7 million issues, 970 thousand pull requests (PR), and over 5.3 million commits belonging to 107,242 NPM libraries.&nbsp;We find that the most congruent contributions originate from contributors who can only submit (not commit) to both a client and library.<br> At the project level, we find that DC congruence shares an inverse relationship with the likelihood that a library becomes dormant, i.e., the lower the DC congruence, the more likely the project becomes dormant. Finally, by comparing source code of contributions, we find statistical differences in file path and added lines in source code of congruent contributions when compared to typical contributions. Our work has implications to encourage and sustain dependency change congruent contributions, especially to support library maintainers in sustaining their projects.</p> <p>Data Description:</p> <p>Datasets and source code related to (a) the ecosystem-level and package-level DC congruence&nbsp;results, (b) the metric data for our survival model analysis, and (c) the file path and source code similarities between contribution types.</p> <p>For each folder, it includes a text file to describe file details.</p>
