Crop-specific global fertilizer application rates from "Closing yield gaps through nutrient and water management"
<p>Crop-specific global maps of N, P2O5, and K2O fertilizer application rates circa the year 2000 from the following paper:</p> <p>Mueller, ND, JS Gerber, M Johnston, DK Ray, N Ramankutty, and JA Foley. 2012. Closing yield gaps through nutrient and water management. <em>Nature</em> <strong>490</strong>: 254–257</p> <p>Data are provided at five arc-minute resolution and are saved as netcdf files. Fertilizer application rates are estimated from reconciling various national and subnational data sources. See the Supplementary Information from the 2012 paper for a full description of data sources and methods. Data quality for each grid cell is described in a map layer. Files containing the text "totalcons" sum nutrient consumption across crops per grid cell, using crop harvested areas from Monfreda et al. 2008 Global Biogeochemical Cycles. For maize, wheat, and soybean N application rates, additional maps and csv files (containing the text "politboundaries") identify the political units around the world containing unique information. Crops and crop group categories are consistent with those utilized in Monfreda et al. 2008 Global Biogeochemical Cycles.</p>

Dataset of predicted dynamic specific yield under periodic water table oscillations
<p>This dataset accompanies the submitted paper in the Water Resources Research: An approximate model for predicting the specific yield under periodic water table oscillations.</p> <p>The dataset includes 299 numerical experiments on predicting dynamic specific yield with different soil properties and different amplitudes of groundwater level oscillations. With this dataset, we proposed an approximate model for predicting the specific yield under diurnal and seasonal water level fluctuations.</p>
Context-dependent effects of Trichoderma seed inoculation on anthracnose disease and seed yield of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris): ambient conditions override cultivar-specific differences
<p>Root colonizing <i>Trichoderma </i>fungi can stimulate plant immunity, but net effects are strain × cultivar-specific and changing ambient conditions further contribute to variable outcomes. Here, we used four <i>Trichoderma</i> spp. to inoculate seeds of four common bean (<i>Phaseolus vulgaris</i>) cultivars and explored in three different experimental setups the effects on fungal anthracnose after leaf inoculation with <i>Colletotrichum lindemuthianum</i>. Plants growing in pots with field soil under greenhouse conditions exhibited the highest and those in the open field the lowest overall levels of disease. Among 48 <i>Trichoderma</i> strain × bean cultivar × setup combinations, <i>Trichoderma</i>-inoculation enhanced disease in six and decreased disease in ten cases, but with the exception of <i>T. asperellum</i> B6-inoculated Negro San Luis beans, the strain × cultivar-specific effects on anthracnose severity differed among the setups, and anthracnose severity did not predict seed yield in the open field. In the case of Flor de Mayo beans, <i>Trichoderma</i> even reduced yield in anthracnose-free field plots, although this effect was counterbalanced in anthracnose-infected plots. We consider our work as a case study that calls for stronger emphasis on field experiments in the early phases of screenings of <i>Trichoderma</i> inoculants as plant biostimulants.</p>

The target, IL-9Rα, is the receptor involved in the signaling pathway of IL-9, a pro-inflammatory cytokine medically important for its involvement in respiratory diseases. The successive use of modified protocols of ribosome and yeast displays allowed us to combine their strengths - the virtually infinite selection power of ribosome display and the production of (mostly) properly folded and soluble proteins in yeast display. The described experimental protocol is optimized to produce binders highly specific to the target, including selectivity to common proteins such as BSA, and proteins potentially competing for the binder such as receptors of other cytokines. The binders were trained from DNA libraries of two protein scaffolds called 57aBi and 57bBi developed in our laboratory. We show that the described unconventional combination of ribosome and yeast displays is effective in developing selective small protein binders to the medically relevant molecular target.</p>

Stage-specific genotype-by-environment interactions determine yield components in wheat
<p> </p> <p>The tables (climate_data.csv, and Yield_data.csv) include the recorded climatic and measured yield components data from multi-environment field trails (2014-2017). The table (soil_water_data.csv) presents the simulated water content for the experiments. The tables (Coefficients_data.csv, and multiple_regression_coefficients_data.csv) present the log p-values of comparing models M1, M2, and M3 and their coefficients. All the necessary information to read these datasets is provided in the table (read_me.csv). </p>

Data from: Cryptic haplotype-specific gamete selection yields offspring with optimal MHC immune genes
Females choose specific mates in order to produce fitter offspring. However, several factors interfere with females' control over fertilization of their eggs, including sneaker males and phenotypically unpredictable allele segregation during meiosis. Mate choice at the individual level thus provides only a poor approximation for obtaining the best genetic match. Consequently, post-copulatory sperm selection by female oocytes has been proposed as a mechanism to achieve complementary combinations of parental haplotypes. Here, using controlled in vitro fertilization of three-spined stickleback eggs, we find haplotype-specific fertilization bias towards gametes with complementary major histocompatibility complex (MHC) immunogenes. The resulting zygote (and thus offspring) genotypes exhibit an intermediate level of individual MHC diversity that was previously shown to confer highest pathogen resistance. Our finding of haplotype-specific gamete selection thus represents an intriguing mechanism for fine-tuned optimization of the offspring's immune gene composition and an evolutionary advantage in the Red Queen dynamics of host-parasite coevolution.
