Factors associated with length to recover adequate nutrition and length of stay in children hospitalized for bronchiolitis: a retrospective study.
<p><strong>Context:</strong> Inadequate feeding is a frequent reason for hospital referring in children with bronchiolitis and leads to prolonged hospitalization in 26% of the cases. The main objective was to identify the factors associated with the time to recover adequate nutrition in infants hospitalized for bronchiolitis.</p> <p><strong>Method:</strong> We conducted a single-center retrospective study including infants less than 12 months hospitalized for bronchiolitis at Le Havre Hospital (France) between September 2018 and February 2021. A multivariate logistic regression model was computed to investigate the factors associated with (1) the time to recover adequate feeding (LOFR), and (2) the hospital length of stay (LOS).</p> <p><strong>Results:</strong> 268 infants were included to assess the LOFR and 478 infants to assess the LOS. The median age was 3.2 months (1.6-5.4) and the sex ratio M/F was 11/20. The use of accessory muscles, nutritional support, and RR ≥ 70/min or < 30/min or apnea are associated (OR=1.5), from virtually no association (OR=1.0) to a significant positive association (OR=2.6) with the LOFR. Intense use of accessory muscles (OR=3.9; 95%CI 1.6-10.4) and "severe" clinical condition (OR=2.8; 95%CI 1.7-4. 8) at admission, O2 supplementation (OR=2.0; 95%CI 1.3-3.1) were significantly related to prolonged LOS in the multivariate analysis.</p> <p><strong>Conclusion:</strong> The clinical severity on admission may be related to the LOFR, ranging from none to significant. Other known factors such as oxygen therapy and the new clinical severity scale proposed by the latest French guidelines appeared to be related to the LOS in this work. Data from: Stay or go? Changing breeding conditions affect sexual difference in colony attendance strategies of Atlantic puffins Fratercula arctica
<p>Male and female birds have different interests in reproductive investment, which in turn may increase negative effects of poorer breeding conditions caused by e.g., climate change or ecosystem regime shifts. Using a 33-year time series with resightings of Atlantic puffins <em>Fratercula arctica</em> individually colour-ringed as breeders in previous years, we show that the difference in colony attendance of male and female birds depends on the environmental conditions for raising young, proxied by the average duration of the chick period and size of the herring <em>Clupea harengus </em>fed to the chicks in the colony each year. The longer the chick period, and thus the birds' overall investment in reproduction, the more was the sex ratio of adults sitting out on the colony surface biased in favour of males. An increase in herring size, indicating better feeding conditions for raising chicks, led to more observations of both sexes, and the increase was slightly more prominent for females than males. We discuss the results in relation to general life-history theory on sexual differences in trade-offs between individual investment in breeding and own survival. Our results suggest that females are increasingly more willing than males to invest in provisioning for the chick the longer the chick needs such care. This difference may also prove valuable as an indication of breeding conditions from only a short visit to a colony with colour-ringed birds of known sex.</p>

Evolving to stay the same: Life history evolution and trade-offs in response to high and low total food
<p>Food drives ecology and evolution, but few studies have directly investigated the impacts of the total amount of food on life history evolution within-species. Among the limited number of available case studies that do directly test total food effects on life history evolution we still lack consensus, partially owing to incompletely described life histories. We explored life history trade-offs across the whole lifecycle, and the consequences for trait and population dynamics, in a marine copepod evolved under high and low total food using an integral projection model (IPM). Populations were subjected to high- and low-food regimes and a common garden experiment after 30 generations of evolution. We then sampled and measured individual vital rates (growth, reproduction, and survival) from hatching until death, which were used to parameterise IPMs. Food regime had a significant but slight effect on life histories, which appeared 'slow' and 'fast' in low-food and high-food lineages respectively. Low-food lineages grew bigger and produced larger offspring to genetically compensate for their environment, but this compensation came with costs; notably shorter lifespans and less chance of producing clutches of eggs. Despite these differences, population ecology and fitness were similar in high- and low-food lineages as anticipated by per-capita rather than total food effects. Consequently, though natural planktonic populations may genetically mitigate the effects of climate-induced food scarcity, there are limits to this compensation and likely unforeseen impacts effects for wider food webs.</p>

Win-Stay-Lose-Shift as a self-confirming equilibrium in the iterated prisoner's dilemma
<p>Evolutionary game theory assumes that players replicate a highly scored player's strategy through genetic inheritance. However, when learning occurs culturally, it is often difficult to recognize someone's strategy just by observing the behaviour. In this work, we consider players with memory-one stochastic strategies in the iterated prisoner's dilemma, with an assumption that they cannot directly access each other's strategy but only observe the actual moves for a certain number of rounds. Based on the observation, the observer has to infer the resident strategy in a Bayesian way and chooses his or her own strategy accordingly. By examining the best-response relations, we argue that players can escape from full defection into a cooperative equilibrium supported by Win-Stay-Lose-Shift in a self-confirming manner, provided that the cost of cooperation is low and the observational learning supplies sufficiently large uncertainty. </p>
Association between preoperative medication lists and postoperative hospital length of stay after endoscopic transsphenoidal pituitary surgery
<p><strong><span>Background</span></strong><span>:</span> <span>Endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery is the most common technique for resection of pituitary adenoma. Data on factors associated with extended hospital stay after this surgery are limited. We aimed to characterize the relationship between preoperative medications and the risk of prolonged postoperative length of stay after this procedure.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Methods</span></strong><span>:</span> <span>This single-center, retrospective cohort study included all adult patients scheduled for transsphenoidal pituitary surgery from July 1</span><span>st,</span><span> 2016 to December 31</span><span>st</span><span>, 2019.</span> <span>Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical</span><span> codes were used to identify patients' preoperative medications. The primary outcome was prolonged postoperative hospital length of stay. Secondary outcomes included unplanned admission to the Intensive Care Unit, in-hospital and one-year mortality. We developed a descriptive logistic model that included preoperative medications, obesity, and age.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Results</span></strong><span>:</span> <span>Median postoperative length of stay was 3 days for the 7</span><span>04 </span><span>analyzed patients. A prolonged length of stay was</span> <span>defined as > 4 days. Patients taking ATC-H drugs were at increased risk of prolonged length of stay (OR 1.56, 95% CI 1.26-1.95, p<0.001). No association was found between preoperative ATC-H medication and unplanned ICU admission or in-hospital mortality. Patients with multiple preoperative ATC-H medications had significantly higher mean LOS (5.4 ± 7.6 days) and one-year mortality (p<0.02).</span></p> <p><strong><span>Conclusions</span></strong><span>: Clinicians should be aware of the possible vulnerability of patients taking systemic hormones preoperatively. Future studies should test this medication-based approach on endoscopic transsphenoidal pituitary surgery populations from different hospitals and countries.</span></p>
Stay in shape: assessing the adaptive potential of shell morphology and its sensitivity to temperature in the invasive New Zealand Mud Snail Potamopyrgus antipodarum through phenotypic plasticity and natural selection in Europe
<p>Climate change may force organisms to adapt genetically or plastically to new environmental conditions. Invasive species show a remarkable potential for rapid adaptation. The ovoviviparous New Zealand mud snail (NZMS), <em>Potamopyrgus antipodarum</em>, has successfully established across Europe with two clonally reproducing mitochondrial lineages since its arrival in the first half of the 19th century. Its remarkable variation in shell morphology was shown to be fitness relevant. We investigated the effects of temperature on shell morphology across eleven populations from Germany and the Iberian Peninsula in a common garden across three temperatures. We analysed size and shape using geometric morphometrics. For both, we compared reaction norms and estimated heritabilities. For size, the interaction of temperature and haplotype explained about 50% of the total variance. We also observed more genotype by environment interactions indicating a higher degree of population differentiation than in shape. Across the three temperatures, size followed the expectations of the temperature-size rule, with individuals growing larger in cold environments. Changes in shape may have compensated changes in size affecting space for brooding embryos. Heritability estimates were relatively high. As indicated by the very low coefficients of variation for clonal repeatability (<em>CV<sub>A</sub></em>), they can probably not be compared in absolute terms. However, they showed some sensitivity to temperature, in haplotype t more so than in z, which was only found in Portugal. The low <em>CV<sub>A</sub></em>-values indicate that genetic variation among European populations is still restricted with low potential to react to selection. A considerable fraction of the genetic variation was due to differences between the clonal lineages. The NZMS has apparently not been long enough in Europe to accumulate significant genetic variation relevant for morphological adaptation. As temperature is obviously not the sole factor influencing shell morphology, their interaction will probably not be a factor limiting population persistence under a warming climate in Europe.</p>
Deciphering the explanatory potential of blood pressure variables on post-operative length of stay through hierarchical clustering: A retrospective monocentric study
<p><em>Objective:</em> Mean arterial pressure is widely used as the variable to monitor during anesthesia. But there are many other variables proposed to define intraoperative arterial hypotension. The goal of the present study was to search arterial pressure variables linked with prolonged postoperative length of stay (pLOS).</p> <p><em>Design: </em>Retrospective cohort study of adult patients having received general for a scheduled non cardiac surgical procedure between 15<sup>th</sup> July 2017 and 31st December 2019.</p> <p><em>Methods:</em> pLOS was defined as a stay longer than the median (main outcome), adjusted for surgery type and duration. 330 arterial pressure variables were analyzed and organized through a clustering approach. An unsupervised hierarchical aggregation method for optimal cluster determination, employing Kendall's tau coefficients and a penalized Bayes information criterion was used. Variables were ranked using the absolute standardized mean distance (aSMD) to measure their effect on pLOS. Finally, after multivariate independence analysis, the number of variables was reduced to three.</p> <p><em>Results:</em> Our study examined 9,516 patients. When LOS is defined as strictly greater than the median, 34% of patients experienced pLOS. Key arterial pressure variables linked with this definition of pLOS included the difference between the highest and lowest pulse pressure values computed throughout the surgery (aSMD[95%CI] =0.39[0.31-0.40], p<0.001), the accumulated time pulse pressure above 61mmHg (aSMD = 0.21[0.17-0.25], p<0.001), and the lowest MAP during surgery (aSMD= 0.20[0.16-0.24], p<0.001).</p> <p><em>Conclusions: </em>By applying a clustering approach, three arterial pressure variables were associated with pLOS. This scalable method can be applied to various dichotomized outcomes.</p>

Data and analysis code for Norton and DuVal - Causes and consequences of nest site fidelity in a tropical lekking bird: win-stay-lose-shift tactics are unrelated to subsequent success, but site-faithful females nest earlier
<p>Nest site selection influences the survival of care-giving parents and their offspring, but search costs and site availability may limit site choices. Returning to previous nest sites may reduce costs and allow parents to better avoid local predators or access familiar resources. We investigated nest site fidelity in the Lance-tailed Manakin (Chiroxiphia lanceolata), in which long-lived females raise offspring without male assistance, and found that site choices are responsive to past success but do not predict future outcomes. We compared georeferenced nest locations for the same females detected in consecutive years (245 comparisons for 138 females) and females nesting repeatedly within a year (137 comparisons for 97 females). Females were faithful to nesting sites in 13.9% of comparisons across years and 10.2% within years, and were more likely to nest again in the same site if their offspring fledged. When switching sites, females moved farther if their previous nest failed. Nest-site fidelity was unrelated to mate fidelity or female age. We then assessed whether site choice related to subsequent female survival, nest timing, or nest survival. Contrary to the hypothesis that win-stay-lose-shift tactics improve subsequent nesting outcomes, we found females were no more likely to fledge chicks or survive to a later year after they reused nest-sites. However, across years, site-faithful females nested earlier on average than females that switched sites. Early nests were more likely to fledge chicks, and early-nesting females were more likely to renest when their first nesting effort was complete. Win-stay-lose-shift tactics may allow females to avoid areas where predation is likely, but new nest sites are not safer. Females that reuse nest sites benefit from early nest initiation, which both correlates with immediate success and creates potential for longer-term benefits of fidelity through increased opportunities to renest throughout the breeding season.</p>
A Benchmark Dataset for Vision-based Bridge Traffic Load Monitoring in a Cable-stayed Bridge
<p>Traffic load monitoring based on deep learning and computer vision has garnered significant attention in bridge engineering worldwide. Unlike traditional traffic load monitoring systems, computer vision-based techniques can accurately extract the spatiotemporal load distribution across the entire bridge in an autonomous manner. However, many of the related studies in the literature used datasets that were collected from a few specific areas of different bridges, and there are very limited datasets that provide complete coverage of the entire bridge, making a detailed comparison of different methods difficult. This paper presents a benchmark dataset that provides a series of annotations and field measurements required for traffic load detection, tracking and continuous monitoring on the bridge. The dataset was collected by five cameras, and two weigh-in-motion systems installed on a cable-stayed bridge and is divided into three subsets. The first subset contains over 32,000 images and annotation files of eleven types of vehicle-related targets, which are necessary for the training of vehicle detection models. The second subset consists of photos of the calibration board and coordinates of reference points that are used for camera calibration. The last subset is designated for the field verification of various algorithms, providing synchronized vehicle weight data and monitoring videos covering the whole bridge. To the author’s knowledge, this dataset is the first open-source dataset for vision-based traffic load monitoring in a bridge, which will have tremendous value in promoting research in the area of innovative bridge health monitoring technologies.</p>
