<p>These datasets complement the Opinion of the Norwegian Scientific Committee for Food and Environment (VKM) "Risk-Benefit Assessment of Sunscreen". They contain:</p> <p>i) data on concentration of the UV filters bis-ethyl-hexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine (BEMT), butyl methoxydibenzoyl methane (BMDBM), 2-ethylhexyl salicylate (EHS), ethylhexyl triazone (EHT), octocrylene (OC), and titanium dioxide in nanoform (NP-TiO<sub>2</sub>) in commercially available sunscreens,</p> <p>ii) data on amount sunscreen used, and</p> <p>iii) data on dermal absorption of the UV filters bis-ethyl-hexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine (BEMT), butyl methoxydibenzoyl methane (BMDBM), 2-ethylhexyl salicylate (EHS), ethylhexyl triazone (EHT), octocrylene (OC), and titanium dioxide in nanoform (NP-TiO<sub>2</sub>).</p> <p>The data are used in the probabilistic exposure estimations in the Opinion. The data were retrieved from open sources.</p> <p>In addition, the R-codes used to perform the exposure estimation, are included.</p>
Determining the photostability of avobenzone in sunscreen formulation models using ultrafast spectroscopy
<p>Avobenzone is an ultraviolet (UV) filter that is often included in sunscreen formulations despite its lack of photostability. Its inclusion is necessary due to few existing alternatives for photoprotection in the UVA region (320 – 400 nm). To better understand and predict the photostability of avobenzone, ultrafast transient electronic absorption spectroscopy (TEAS) has been used to study the effects of solvent (including emollients), concentration and skin surface temperature on its excited-state relaxation mechanism, following photoexcitation with UVA radiation (~350 nm). Subtle differences between the excited-state lifetimes were found between the systems, but the TEAS spectral features were qualitatively the same for all solution and temperature combinations. Alongside TEAS measurements, UV filter/emollient blends containing avobenzone were irradiated using simulated solar light and their degradation tracked using steady-state UV-visible spectroscopy. Sun protection factor (SPF) and UVA protection factor (UVA-PF) assessments were also carried out on representative oil phases (higher concentration blends), which could be used to formulate oil-in-water sunscreens. It was found that there was an apparent concentration dependence on the long-term photoprotective efficacy of these mixtures, which could be linked to the ultrafast photodynamics by the presence of a ground-state bleach offset. This combination of techniques show potential for correlating long-term behaviours (minutes to hours) of avobenzone with its ultrafast photophysics (femtoseconds to nanoseconds), bridging the gap between fundamental photophysics/photochemistry and commercial sunscreen design.</p>
Substituent position effects on sunscreen photodynamics: a closer look at methyl anthranilate
<p>Towards the development of a <em>bottom-up</em> rationale for sunscreen design, the effects of substituent position on the ultrafast photodynamics of the sunscreen precursor methyl anthranilate (MA, an <em>ortho</em> compound) were evaluated by studying <em>para-</em> and <em>meta-</em>MA in vacuum. Time-resolved ion yield (TR-IY) measurements reveal a long-lived S<sub>1</sub> excited state (≫ 1.2 ns) for <em>para-</em>MA, proposed to be the result of a weakly fluorescent, bound excited state. In the case of <em>meta-</em>MA, TR-IY transients reveal a much faster (~2 ns) excited state relaxation, possibly due to multiple low-lying S<sub>1</sub>/S<sub>0</sub> conical intersections of prefulvenic character. While <em>meta-</em>MA may not be an ideal sunscreen ingredient due to a low ultraviolet absorbance, its comparatively efficient relaxation mechanism may constitute an alternative to common sunscreen relaxation pathways.</p> <p>This archive contains example computational input and output files for both species, including:</p> <ol> <li>TD-DFT files for use with NWChem</li> <li>SA-CASSCF conical intersection search files for use with Gaussian 03</li> <li>CASPT2 files for use with Gaussian 03</li> <li>DFT relaxed geometries for <em>para</em>-MA and <em>meta-</em>MA (<em>e.g</em>. para_0_opt.xyz)</li> <li>SA-CASSCF conical intersection geometries from both molecules as (<em>e.g</em>. p1.xyz)</li> </ol>
