Tramadol effects on physical performance and sustained attention during a 20-min indoor cycling time-trial: A randomised controlled trial

Objectives: To investigate the effect of tramadol on performance during a 20-min cycling time-trial (Exper- iment 1), and to test whether sustained attention would be impaired during cycling after tramadol intake (Experiment 2). Design: Randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled trial. Methods: In Experiment 1, participants completed a cycling time-trial, 120-min after they ingested either tramadol or placebo. In Experiment 2, participants performed a visual oddball task during the time-trial. Electroencephalography measures (EEG) were recorded throughout the session. Results: In Experiment 1, average time-trial power output was higher in the tramadol vs. placebo condition (tramadol: 220 W vs. placebo: 209 W; p < 0.01). In Experiment 2, no differences between conditions were observed in the average power output (tramadol: 234 W vs. placebo: 230 W; p > 0.05). No behavioural differences were found between conditions in the oddball task. Crucially, the time frequency analysis in Experiment 2 revealed an overall lower target-locked power in the beta-band (p < 0.01), and higher alpha suppression (p < 0.01) in the tramadol vs. placebo condition. At baseline, EEG power spectrum was higher under tramadol than under placebo in Experiment 1 while the reverse was true for Experiment 2. Conclusions: Tramadol improved cycling power output in Experiment 1, but not in Experiment 2, which may be due to the simultaneous performance of a cognitive task. Interestingly enough, the EEG data in Experiment 2 pointed to an impact of tramadol on stimulus processing related to sustained attention. Trial registration: EudraCT number: 2015-005056-96.

Use of Ultra‐High‐Performance Fiber‐Reinforced Concrete (UHP‐FRC) for Fast and Sustainable Repair of Pavements

Corresponding data set for Tran-SET Project No.17STUTA03. Abstract of the final report is stated below for reference:

"This research presents a new methodology, which enables streets, roads, highways, bridges, and airfields to use an advanced fiber-reinforced concrete material, which can delay or prevent the deterioration of these transportation infrastructure when subjected to traffic and environmental loadings. The major problem of concrete is its considerable deterioration and limited service life due to its brittleness and limited durability. As a result, it requires frequent repair and eventual replacement, which consumes more natural resources. Ultra-high-performance fiber-reinforced concrete (UHP-FRC) introduces significant enhancement in the sustainability of concrete structures due to its dense microstructure and damage-tolerance characteristics. These characteristics can significantly reduce the amount of repair, rehabilitation, and maintenance work, thereby giving the transportation infrastructure a longer service life. This research addresses the strong need to develop fast and sustainable UHP-FRC materials for pavement repair that can be easily cast onsite without special treatments. This avoids any major changes to current concrete production practice and accelerates the use of UHP-FRC materials. This research investigated a new method for concrete repair by combining precast UHP-FRC panels with a small quantity of cast-in-place UHP-FRC for pavement repair without any dowel bars. In this method, a precast UHP-FRC panel is used along with cast-in-place UHP-FRC. The vertical repair surfaces of the existing concrete are roughened on site. The outer edges of the UHP-FRC precast panel are roughened before they are brought to the site (no dowel bars are needed). The depth of the precast UHP-FRC panel is the same as the existing pavement thickness. Only a small cast-in-place UHP-FRC joint (one to two inches wide) is done onsite. The roughened precast UHP-FRC panel is placed in the repair area and cast-in-place UHP-FRC is cast into the joint. Experimental results showed that using a roughened surface (up to about CSP 5) provides a very large bond resistance, which is enough to prevent faulting."

Toward Non-Corrosion and Highly Sustainable Structural Members by Using Ultra-High-Performance Materials for Transportation Infrastructure

Corresponding data set for Tran-SET Project No. 18STUTA01. Abstract of the final report is stated below for reference:

"This research focused on investigating a highly sustainable and efficient reinforced concrete structural member for future infrastructure by utilizing emerging high-performance materials. These materials include ultra-high-performance fiber-reinforced concrete (UHP-FRC) and corrosion-resistant high-strength fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) bars. Four reduced scale UHP-FRC specimens were tested under large displacement reversals to prove the proposed new ductile-concrete strong-reinforcement (DCSR) design concept by fully utilizing these ultra-high-performance materials. Micro steel fibers were incorporated into three specimens and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fibers were blended into the fourth specimen. One specimen with ASTM A1035 MMFX high-strength steel rebars, one with high-strength glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) rebars, and two with high-strength basalt fiber reinforced plastic (BFRP) rebars were tested. The beams had a reinforcement ratio of 14% to 15%. The test results concluded that the beams could sustain very large cyclic drift ratios without major damage in the UHP-FRC material, which provided ample shear strength and confinement to the reinforcement throughout the testing. Even with the high amount of reinforcement, UHP-FRC’s superior ductility provided a very stable cyclic behavior up to some very large drift ratios. Because of the DCSR design, all specimens also exhibited a self-centering ability, which considerably reduces the residual displacement after being subjected to large displacement reversals. The test results also show that the high damage-resistance and self-centering characteristics of the proposed UHP-FRC flexural members can provide excellent resilience for building structures."

Qualitative data on: Sustainability drivers and inhibitors for the health system performance improvement projects in selected health facilities in Kenya

Objectives to investigate the health managers perceived sustainability status of the health facilities institutional improvement projects and their experiences on factors that facilitated or constrained their maintenance, with intentions of informing relevant strategies or policies in Kenya's health sector.

Methods A qualitative study, nested within a quasi-experimental study. Thirty-three project-teams of health managers were purposively selected and interviewed based on their project implementation success rates post-training. The managers had previously undergone a 9-month leadership training, complimented with facility-based team coaching around the chosen projects. The training was funded by the USAID; however, the implementation of the projects was based on how the participants could innovatively utilize the existing resource to create a positive change. The projects were housed within 20 public, nine faith-based, and four private health facilities in 19 Counties in Kenya. The interviews explored the manager's experiences in sustaining the successfully implemented projects within the (24-60 months post-training period). We asked Managers to describe factors they perceived enabled or hindered the sustainability of the successfully implemented institutional improvement project. The digitally audio-recorded interviews were transcribed verbatim. Data on barriers and enablers were thematically analyzed.

Results Twenty-seven out of the 33 successfully implemented projects reported sustainability within periods ranging from 24-60 months post-training. Seven themes related to drivers of sustainability emerged, namely; program design, stakeholder's buy-in, board members, communication, coaching, presence of change champion, devolution and political good-will. Four sustainability inhibitors identified were; human resources constraints, policy implementation, misalignment of projects with daily operations, devolution and political interference.

Conclusions The sustainability of institutional improvement strategies such as projects implemented post-leadership training in public and private health facilities depends on the quality of board members, communication management and institutionalization of coaching culture. These findings are pertinent for planning and implementing similar health systems strengthening intervention in low-income countries.
