Dataset for algorithmic thinking skills assessment: Results from the virtual CAT large-scale study in Swiss compulsory education

<p><strong>Overview</strong><br>This dataset was collected during a main study that evaluated the virtual Cross Array Task (CAT) platform as an assessment tool for algorithmic thinking (AT) skills among K-12 students in Swiss compulsory education.<br>As algorithmic thinking becomes increasingly vital in our digital age, this study bridges the gap between traditional assessments and the needs of today's learners by introducing a digital platform. The virtual CAT, a digital adaptation of an unplugged assessment activity, offers scalable, automated assessments with reduced human intervention.</p> <p><strong>Study Context, Location and Participants</strong><br>To comprehensively investigate algorithmic competencies within compulsory education, exploring their variations and determining the factors influencing them, in Spring 2023 we conducted an experimental study with the virtual CAT's.<br>The sample comprises 129 students (65 girls and 64 boys), selected from nine classes across five public schools in Ticino and Solothurn cantons.</p> <p><strong>Data Collection</strong><br>During the data collection process, session and participant details were manually recorded by the administrator. <br>Each session has been assigned a unique identifier, and specific details, such as the date, canton, school name and type, and the students&rsquo; HarmoS grade (HG) level, have been recorded.&nbsp;<br>Student information are limited to sex and date of birth, with birth dates used to calculate ages, a significant factor in our demographic analysis. <br>To protect student privacy, unique identifiers have been assigned to each participant, keeping the data anonymous and secure. <br>The assessment tool automatically tracked all user interaction within the platform.<br>All data collected have been pseudonymised, aligning with prevailing open science practices in Switzerland (SNSF, 2021).&nbsp;<br>Data collection was integrated into a validation module of the app.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Data Features</strong><br>The dataset comprises the following files:</p> <ul> <li>STUDENTS_SESSIONS.csv</li> <li>RESULTS.csv</li> <li>LOGS.csv</li> <li>CANTONS.csv</li> <li>ALGORITHMS.csv</li> </ul> <p>These files collectively provide insights into the algorithmic actions of the students, demographic details, session logs, results, and more.</p> <p><strong>Usage &amp; Ethics</strong><br>In the spirit of open science, this dataset is made available to the public after meticulous anonymisation to ensure all participants' privacy and ethical treatment.&nbsp;<br>Initial authorisations were secured from school administrators, teachers, and parents.&nbsp;<br>Detailed communication regarding the study's nature, data handling, and objectives was transparently shared with all stakeholders.</p> <p><strong>REFERENCES</strong></p> <p><strong>[1]</strong>&nbsp;A. The deployment of temporary nurses and its association with permanent nurses' outcomes in Swiss psychiatric hospitals: A secondary analysis.

<p>The objective of this analysis was to investigate the frequency of temporary nurses&rsquo; deployment and their association with nurse staffing levels and permanent nurses&rsquo; outcomes in Swiss psychiatric hospitals. The data is based on the Match<sup>RN</sup> Psychiatry study including 79 psychiatric units and 651 nurses&nbsp; and provides unit level frequency of temporary nurses&rsquo; deployment and individual nurse level data on&nbsp; staffing levels and permanent nurses&rsquo; outcomes namely job satisfaction, burnout, and intention to leave organization or profession. The data was collected in 2019 and 2020. We provide the unit and nurse-level dataset, a codebook and the r code to replicate the analyses of the paper. Rooftop photovoltaic (PV) potential data for the Swiss building stock

<p>The provided dataset contains data for the PV potentials on building rooftops, evaluated for 9.6 M roof surfaces in Switzerland in an hourly temporal resolution. The methodology of the generation of the dataset is described in:</p> <p>Walch, Alina, Roberto Castello, Nahid Mohajeri, and Jean-Louis Scartezzini. &ldquo;Big Data Mining for the Estimation of Hourly Rooftop Photovoltaic Potential and Its Uncertainty.&rdquo; <em>Applied Energy</em> 262 (March 15, 2020): 114404.</p> <p>In the process of generating this dataset, the following aspects were included:</p> <ul> <li>Meteorological conditions in Switzerland (solar radiation, temperature, snow cover)</li> <li>Local shading and sky coverage from surrounding buildings and trees (based on a Digital Surface Model)</li> <li>Obstruction of roof surface due to roof superstructures such as dormers and chimneys (estimated based on data from the canton of Geneva)</li> <li>The panel and inverter efficiencies, as a function of the solar radiation and temperature</li> </ul> <p>Several aspects were estimated and hence include some uncertainty, due to the input datasets and the modelling methodology. For details on the sources of uncertainty and the limitations, please refer to the referenced article. Estimates for these uncertainties are provided alongside the variables. A description of the metadata is provided in the document&nbsp;<em>rooftop_PV_CH_metadata_V1.pdf.</em></p> <p><strong>Data description:</strong></p> <p>The rooftop PV potential data has been computed at monthly-mean-hourly temporal resolution (i.e. 24 hours for each of the 12 months) for each individual roof surface, based on a national roof surface dataset created by SwissTopo (see https://www.uvek-gis.admin.ch/BFE/sonnendach/). The data given in this dataset is aggregated, in order to make the data easier to use for studies inside as well as outside Switzerland, to reduce the file size and to respect license agreements.&nbsp;Two types of aggregation are provided:</p> <ol> <li>Aggregation per building, using the object ID of the SwissBuildings3D&nbsp;cadastre as identifier.&nbsp;</li> <li>Aggregation per roof type, separating between 4 categories: Tilt angle, aspect angle, roof area, altitude</li> </ol> <p>If a different type of aggregation or the data per individual roof surface is required, please do not hesitate to get in touch with the authors directly.</p>

Temperature and dissolved oxygen profiles for three Swiss lakes: 1972-2016

Understanding change through time in dissolved oxygen (DO) in lakes requires the use of long-term historical monitoring data. The data contained herein include historical temperature and dissolved oxygen profiles from three Swiss lakes collected between the years 1972 to 2017. These three lakes are a subset of a larger set of lakes that were used to examine the relationship between long-term changes in the timing of lake stratification and changes in the amount of oxygen-depleted water present in the water column.

Swiss public's acceptance and sustainability perceptions of food produced with chemical, digital and mechanical weed control measures and the influence of information source on technology perception in agriculture

<p><span>This data was obtained from an online survey conducted with the Swiss public from the two biggest language regions (German and French) in Switzerland. The survey was conducted in February 2023. Participants were recruited through a professional panel provider and quotas were used for age, gender and language region. The final sample contained&nbsp;</span><span>542 respondents. </span><span>In the first part of the survey, respondents provided basic sociodemographic information. In the second part, their sustainability perceptions regarding four different weed management practices (full-surface spraying, hoeing machine, spot spraying and precise spraying) were investigated. Respondents were then assigned to one of five information source groups, in which information on a hoeing and a milking robot was presented, using 5 different information sources (male/female farmer, male/female scientist, no source). Technology perception was assessed using several questions and aspects. Finally, respondents answered several questions assessing their attitudes towards the perception of farmers, food technology neophobia, chemophobia and the importance of naturalness. The survey can be used and adapted to different contents, aiming to investigate public perception of smart farming technologies and the influence of information sources on technology perception. </span></p>

Swiss Federal Supreme Court Dataset (SCD)

<p>The Swiss Federal Supreme Court Dataset (SCD) provides a record of all 127,477 cases decided by the Swiss Federal Supreme Court between 2007 and December 2024. The SCD includes 31 variables that document basic case information, the court composition, the area of law, information about the appealed judgment, the parties, the case outcome, and about citations and publication status.</p> <p>The dataset can be used as data infrastructure for both qualitative and quantitative analysis of Federal Supreme Court jurisprudence. It is generated using a fully automated pipeline and will be updated regularly to include the latest judgments and possible expansions.</p>

Ethnic Discrimination in the Swiss Labour Market

<p>Discrimination of ethnic minorities in hiring decisions in the labour market has become a common phenomenon. Across OECD countries ethnic minority applicants have to write approximately 50% more applications to be invited for a job interview compared to an equally qualified majority applicant. Little is known about the extent of discrimination in the Swiss Labour Market, since the last correspondence test conducted in Switzerland is more than 15 years old and targets only a very specific sector of the labour market - the transition from school to apprenticeships.<br> To fill this gap in knowledge on discrimination in the Swiss labour market, a new correspondence test was conducted. It measures discrimination in various occupations, against different ethnic minority groups, including candidates with German or French backgrounds, and looks at the differences and similarities between the German and French speaking regions in Switzerland.</p>

The potential of low-cost UAVs and open-source photogrammetry software for high-resolution monitoring of alpine glaciers: A case study from the Kanderfirn (Swiss Alps)

<p>This dataset contains high-resolution orthophotos (5 x 5 cm) and digital surface models (25 x 25 cm) of the Kandernfirn Glacier located in the Swiss Alps. Aerial images were aquired with a self-developed fixed-wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicle during ten surveys&nbsp;on five different days in 2017 and 2018. The open-source photogrammetry software OpenDroneMap (version 0.4.1) was used for image processing.</p> <p>The orthophotos and digital surface models were validated through dGNSS point measurements of ground control points. Please refer to the corresponding paper for information on the horizontal and vertical accuracy of the files.</p>

Participants were on average 25&nbsp;years&nbsp;old when they&nbsp;answered the questionnaires.&nbsp;The final sample size used in the manuscript is 5516. Variable description and labels can be found in the codebook. For further information on the&nbsp;instruments used&nbsp;please refer to the paper.</p> <p>The dataset contains data for three waves that was collected between September 2010 and March 2018 in Switzerland by the C-SURF study (<a href="http://www.c-surf.ch/">www.c-surf.ch</a>). Participants were on average 20 &nbsp;years&nbsp;old at wave 1, 21 at wave 2 and 25 at wave 3 when they&nbsp;answered the questionnaires.&nbsp;The final sample size used in the paper is 4746 after excluding those that did not reply to a questionnaire or to a variable of interest for the main analysis.</p> <p>The research protocol for this study was approved by the Human Research Ethics Committee of the Canton Vaud (Protocol No. 15/07). Virtually Real short film "LUX" by Wendy Pillonel, versions with real and virtual backgrounds, 7min18sec, swiss-german, ProRes 1998 × 1080

<p>Two short feature films were recorded with a virtual background by using a green screen in a film studio and previously scanned 3D spaces in a virtual production environment and conventionally (in the corresponding real spaces) to compare the aesthetics and perception of these films. One scene of each film is shown in two variants (real vs. virtual background) to make a comparison.</p> <p>These 2&nbsp;QuickTime files&nbsp;represents both the &quot;real&quot; and &quot;virtual&quot; version of the short Film &quot;Lux&quot; by Wendy Pillonel. The real version was&nbsp;shot on location using real backgrounds, the virtual version was shot in the studio&nbsp;in front of a green-screen using virtual backgrounds that were added in post production.&nbsp;</p> <p>Running time: 7min18sec. This is the highest quality version available.&nbsp;</p> <p>Virtually Real is a research project by the Zurich University of the Arts, Institute for the Performing Arts and Film and the University of Bern, Institute of Psychology.</p>

Migration Route of Swiss Ring Ouzels with Multi-Sensor Geolocator

Supplementary material for "Long-term trends of reproductive success of black grouse Lyrurus tetrix in the southern Swiss Alps in relation to changes in climate and land use"

<p><strong>Abstract</strong></p> <p>Breeding success of an Alpine black grouse <em>Lyrurus tetrix</em> population in southern Switzerland was monitored from 1981 to 2020. This long-term dataset allows exploring relationships of reproductive rates with climate and habitat, which have shown marked changes during this period. Over the 40 years, the average elevation of black grouse breeding sites increased by around 100 m in Central/Southern Ticino but showed only a slight increase in Northern Ticino, where black grouse occur at higher elevations. Average reproductive rates in Northern Ticino remained constant throughout the study period but declined in Central/Southern Ticino. Relationships between reproductive success and weather as well as habitat variables were analysed with a multiple regression model. Temperature during the early chick-rearing phase and the time of egg-laying was positively correlated with reproductive rate. Correlations between reproductive rates and precipitation were less clear, and only small proportions of the variance in reproductive rates could be explained by precipitation. Brush forest explained the greatest amount of variation in reproductive rate (6.2%). Forest, alpine agricultural areas, and unproductive vegetation all showed a positive relationship with reproductive rate, but the proportion of the variance explained was small. Year (5.1%) and its interaction with region (2.3%) explained considerable amounts of the variance. While in Northern Ticino reproductive success did not show a negative trend when correcting for weather and habitat changes, there remained a negative trend over the years in Central/Southern Ticino. Despite the positive correlations of reproductive rate with temperature, increasing temperatures do not appear to have improved reproductive success, likely as a result of habitat changes that forced black grouse towards higher elevations. Changes in reproductive success were limited to the southern region, indicating deteriorating conditions at the edge of the distribution range.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>
