Optical tweezer platform for the characterization of pH-triggered colloidal transformations in the oleic acid/water system

<p>Hypothesis: Soft colloidal particles that respond to their environment have innovative potential for many fields ranging from food and health to biotechnology and oil recovery. The in situ characterisation of colloidal transformations that triggers the functional response remain a challenge.</p> <p>Experiments: This study demonstrates the combination of an optical&nbsp;<a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/physics-and-astronomy/micromanipulation">micromanipulation</a>&nbsp;platform, polarized optical video microscopy and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/physics-and-astronomy/microfluidics">microfluidics</a>&nbsp;in a comprehensive approach for the analysis of pH-driven structural transformations in emulsions. The new platform, together with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/physics-and-astronomy/synchrotron">synchrotron</a>&nbsp;small angle X-ray scattering, was then applied to research the food-relevant, pH-responsive,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/chemistry/oleic-acid">oleic acid</a>&nbsp;in water system.</p> <p>Findings: The experiments demonstrate structural transformations in individual oleic acid particles from micron-sized onion-type multilamellar oleic acid vesicles at pH 8.6, to nanostructured emulsions at pH &lt; 8.0, and eventually oil droplets at pH &lt; 6.5. The smooth particle-water interface of the onion-type vesicles at pH 8.6 was transformed into a rough particle surface at pH below 7.5. The pH-triggered changes of the interfacial tension at the droplet-water interface together with mass transport owing to structural transformations induced a self-propelled motion of the particle. The results of this study contribute to the fundamental understanding of the structure&ndash;property relationship in pH-responsive emulsions for nutrient and drug delivery applications.</p>

Morphological and physical chemical characterization of main agricultural plastics articles used for protected cultivation systems during ageing in fields, and collection practices

<p>This dataset includes data generated upon the implementation of the ST 1.2.1 "Analysis of degradation and fragmentation of AP and transfer of MNP to soil". The activities dealt with the study of degradation and fragmentation from weathering and agricultural practices of conventional and biodegradable AP relevant for transfer of MNP to soil (during both use and end of life). In particular, the experimental data refer to characterization of biodegradable mulch films, pristine (coded M-BIO0) or subjected to photo-oxidative weathering (M-BIO192), as well as the same samples buried in soil for varying time periods, up to 353 days. The folders included contain gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and Matrix-assisted Laser Desorption Ionization (MALDI-TOF) data, which account for the change in film molecular weight upon soil burial. Furthermore, Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) data and&nbsp; Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Water Contact Angle (WCA) images of some selected samples are also provided. The folder named MS RAW FILES.zip includes all the mass spectrometry raw data.</p>

Data and results for manuscript "Multi-frequency electrical impedance tomography as a non-invasive tool to characterize and monitor crop root systems "

<p>Root systems are essential in nutrient uptake and translocation, but are difficult to characterize non-invasively with existing methods. We propose electrical impedance tomography (EIT) as a new tool for the imaging and monitoring of crop root systems. In a laboratory experiment we demonstrate the capability of the method to capture physiological responses of root systems with high spatial and temporal resolution. We conclude that EIT is a promising functional imaging technique for crop roots.</p> <p>This package contains measured raw EIT data, electrical imaging results, spectral results from the Debye decomposition, and the Python scripts used to generate the plots in the manuscript.</p>

Physical and technical characterization of main agricultural plastics articles used for protected cultivation systems

<p>The folder "Thermal and spectroscopic data on the characterization of mulch films.rar" includes differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetry (TG), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and water contact angle (WCA) raw data and images relevant to the characterization of conventional and biodegradable mulch films. 7 mulching films consisting of 3 different conventional linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE, coded as PE) films and 4 different biodegradable (PBAT-based, coded as BIO) films are analysed.In particular, data regarding M-BIOIT-15-black-0, M-PEIT-15-black-0, M-BIOEL-15-black-0, M-PEEL-15-black-0, M-PEEL-50-transparent-0, M-BIODE-30-black-0 and M-BIOFI-15-black-0 are included.</p>

Data for: Characterization of a sperm motility signaling pathway in a gonochoric coral suggests conservation across sexual systems

<p>Most stony corals liberate their gametes into the water column via broadcast spawning, where fertilization hinges upon the activation of directional sperm motility. Sperm from gonochoric and hermaphroditic corals display distinct morphological and molecular phenotypes, yet it is unknown whether the signaling pathways controlling sperm motility are also distinct between these sexual systems. Here, we addressed this knowledge gap using the gonochoric broadcast spawning coral <em>Astrangia</em> <em>poculata</em>. We found that cytosolic alkalinization of sperm activates the pH-sensing enzyme soluble adenylyl cyclase (sAC), which is required for motility. Additionally, we demonstrate for the first time in any cnidarian that sAC activity is necessary for PKA activation, and PKA activity is also required for motility. Ultrastructures of <em>A. poculata</em> sperm displayed morphological homology with other gonochoric cnidarians, and investigation of cnidarian proteomes revealed that sAC exhibits broad structural and functional conservation across this phylum. These results indicate a conserved role for pH-dependent sAC-PKA signaling in sperm motility across coral sexual systems and suggest that the role of this pathway in sperm motility is likely ancestral in metazoans. Finally, the dynamics of this pH-sensitive pathway may play a critical role in determining the sensitivity of marine invertebrate reproduction to anthropogenic ocean acidification.</p>
