Marsh vegetation cover data from quadrats along transects in salt marsh sites in Rowley, MA. The transects are intended to study long term changes in marsh vegetation. The other two (PUH and CC) were reference sites. Two additional sites labeled RM and RR (8 transects) were originally set up to track invasion by Phragmites australis.

Permafrost thaw monitoring in Denali National Park: Thermokarst transect surveys 2013-2023

This dataset contains variables measured at thawed, ice-rich permafrost sites in Denali National Park and Preserve. Transects were established at seven sites in the Toklat river basin in 2013 to understand how ecosystem characteristics changed following permafrost thaw. Transects were co-located with known thaw subsidence (thermokarst) or erosional features and run from outside (relatively undisturbed tundra) through the feature. These data represent a long-term monitoring project of permafrost and ecosystem characteristics, surveyed initially in 2013 and re-surveyed 10 years later in 2023.

Data for: Zebra finch song ecology: monitoring of breeding, observational transects, focal and year-round acoustic recordings, and a large-scale simultaneous playback experiment

<p class="MsoNormal">Male songbirds sing to establish territories and to attract mates. However, increasing reports of singing in non-reproductive contexts and by females show that song use is more diverse than previously considered. Therefore, alternative functions of song, such as social cohesion and synchronisation of breeding, by and large were overlooked even in such well-studied species as the zebra finch (<em>Taeniopygia guttata</em>). In these social songbirds only the males sing and pairs breed synchronously in loose colonies following aseasonal rain events in their arid habitat. As males are not territorial, and pairs form long-term monogamous bonds early in life, conventional theory predicts that zebra finches should not sing much at all; yet they do and their song is the focus of hundreds of lab-based studies. We hypothesise that zebra finch song functions to maintain social cohesion and to synchronise breeding. Here we test this idea using data from five years of field studies, including observational transects, focal and year-round audio recordings, and a large-scale playback experiment. We show that zebra finches frequently sing while in groups, that breeding status influences song output at the nest and at aggregations, that they sing year-round, and that they predominantly sing when with their partner, suggesting that song remains important after pair formation. Our playback reveals that song actively features in social aggregations as it attracts conspecifics. Together, these results demonstrate that birdsong has important functions beyond territoriality and mate choice, illustrating its importance in coordination and cohesion of social units within larger societies.</p>

<p><span>These data on bird species abundance and environmental variables were used in testing and comparing two different species distribution model validation methods that are applied to models which are used to predict the effects of climate change on species' distributions. The aim of the study was to investigate whether different validation methods give different results of the model's predictive performance and to demonstrate that validation methods based on measuring and validating a "static" pattern in distribution can assess model performance over-optimistically compared to methods based on measuring and validating a "change" in the distribution, which can assess the predictive performance more critically. </span></p>

Plant Phenology Monitoring Transects at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (1991-1995)

This study was designed to monitor the occurrence of various phenological events of plant species at seven research sites on the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge (i.e., Black Butte, Goat Draw, Five Points, Deep Well, Rio Salado, Sepultura Canyon and Los Pinos foothills watershed (Red Tank/222)). The phenological events monitored included germination, vegetative growth, budding (flowers), flowering, fruiting, dormancy, senescence, and death. All transects were placed close to Sevilleta LTER meteorological stations, allowing the coupling of biotic and abiotic data to detect relationships between climate and phenology. Â
