Long-term Plant Biomass Monitoring Data from Altamaha River Plant Transition Sites near the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER Project on Sapelo Island, Georgia
The Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER program (GCE) monitors plant biomass annually to measure the species and size distribution of plants at 3 sampling sites on the creekbank of the Altamaha River. The sites were chosen to capture the transition from Spartina alterniflora to Spartina cynosuroides (site SCSA) and the transition from Spartina cynosuroides to Zizaniopsis miliacea (sites ZSC1 and ZSC2). The quadrats were established as permanent plots in October 2012 by placing PVC stakes along the creekbank at each site. Plots were evenly spaced, but were not randomly located because the goal was to start with mixtures of vegetation in most of the plots, and vegetation was distributed in patches along the creekbanks. Therefore, these plots provide useful measures of vegetation change, but are not a random sample of the vegetation at the site. Plots will be replaced each year as necessary to replace any lost to disturbance. The plots were visually surveyed and the species, shoot height, and flowering status was recorded individually for each shoot over 10 cm in height present in each plot. Observations from plots exhibiting signs of disturbance were noted in a separate data set (PLT-GCEM-1801c). This data set includes cumulative long-term observations of plant stem count, height and biomass per plot and species at 3 Altamaha River transition sites from 2012 to 2023, and will be updated annually to include the prior year observations.
Characterizing the ecology and soil biogeochemistry of wetland transition zones along the Satilla River Estuary, GA, USA.
The location of salinity gradients in coastal wetlands, from tidal freshwater sourced from riverine inputs to polyhaline sourced from saline ocean water, is subject to natural and unnatural shifts due to climactic patterns such as changes in discharge, sea-level rise (SLR), and alterations to hydrology. Increased inundation in of saltwater in the Satilla River has resulted in conversions of plant communities from fresh or brackish to salt tolerant species that has implications for belowground soil biogeochemistry. These data explore the translation of aboveground properties to soil properties in transitional wetlands in poly-, meso-, and oligohaline regions and across elevation gradients from levee to platform in the Satilla River Estuary, GA by characterizing the ecological communities and soil size fractionation, total organic carbon content (TOC) and composition (delta13C).
RTK survey of permanent monitoring plots at Altamaha plant transition sites conducted between 2015 and 2025.
Initial real time kinematic (RTK) GPS survey of ground elevations of GCE permanent monitoring plots at the Altamaha plant transition sites ZSC1 and ZSC2 was conducted in January 2013. RTK survey of permanent monitoring plots at Altamaha plant transition site SCSA was conducted in July 2025. Plots that experienced terminal slump or could not be found for any reason were replaced with a new plot in the same general area with the plot code incremented by 10. For example if plot 3 was lost, it was replaced by 13, and then in turn by 23. This data set will be updated as future RTK measurement of the plots are made.
Disturbance to monitoring plots at Altamaha River Plant Transition Sites SCSA, ZSC1, and ZSC2 from 2013 to 2025.
We established permanent vegetation monitoring plots at Altamaha River plant transition sites in 2012. Starting in 2013, when we recorded plant sizes, we also noted any disturbance to the plots. Plots were scored as normal (no visible disturbance), disturbed by wrack (wrack present in plots and stems dead or broken), disturbed by snails (>100 Littoraria per square meter and plant biomass low), disturbed by pigs (animal trail through the plot), initial slump (plot at the creekbank sliding into the creek based on movement of pvc poles or formation of a crevasse), and terminal slump (plot had slid far enough down that vegetation had drowned). Plots that experienced terminal slump or could not be found for any reason were scored as lost. Lost plots were replaced with a new plot in the same general area with the plot code incremented by 10. For example if plot 3 was lost, it was replaced by 13, and then in turn by 23.

The sampling transect extended from the northern Barents Sea into the Nansen Basin (76°N – 83°N) as part of <em>The Nansen Legacy</em> project (Research Council of Norway, RCN #276730). The molecular composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) was analyzed using an Orbitrap mass spectrometer.</p>

Cascade project at North Temperate Lakes LTER - Daily data for key variables in whole lake experiments on early warnings of critical transitions, Paul and Peter Lakes, 2008-2011
Peter Lake's food web was altered by adding largemouth bass at a slow rate while monitoring key food web constituents including littoral minnow abundance indexed as catch per trap per hour, zooplankton biomass, and concentration of chlorophyll a. Paul Lake was manipulated and the same variables were measured there. In Peter Lake, we expected littoral catch of minnows to first increase as minnows moved into the littoral zone due to the threat of bass predation and then decrease due to bass predation. We expected zooplankton biomass to increase as minnows moved into the littoral zone. We expected chlorophyll to decrease due to increased grazing by zooplankton. We expected that variance and autocorrelation of chlorophyll would increase as the food web passed a critical transition. We expected that the time series in Paul Lake would represent the normal variability of an unmanipulated lake
Biome Transition Along Elevational Gradients in New Mexico (SEON) Study: Flux Tower Net Primary Productivity (NPP) Quadrat Study at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico
The varied topography and large elevation gradients that characterize the arid and semi-arid Southwest create a wide range of climatic conditions - and associated biomes - within relatively short distances. This creates an ideal experimental system in which to study the effects of climate on ecosystems. Such studies are critical given that the Southwestern U.S. has already experienced changes in climate that have altered precipitation patterns (Mote et al. 2005), and stands to experience dramatic climate change in the coming decades (Seager et al. 2007; Ting et al. 2007). Climate models currently predict an imminent transition to a warmer, more arid climate in the Southwest (Seager et al. 2007; Ting et al. 2007). Thus, high elevation ecosystems, which currently experience relatively cool and mesic climates, will likely resemble their lower elevation counterparts, which experience a hotter and drier climate. In order to predict regional changes in carbon storage, hydrologic partitioning and water resources in response to these potential shifts, it is critical to understand how both temperature and soil moisture affect processes such as evaportranspiration (ET), total carbon uptake through gross primary production (GPP), ecosystem respiration (Reco), and net ecosystem exchange of carbon, water and energy across elevational gradients. We are using a sequence of six widespread biomes along an elevational gradient in New Mexico -- ranging from hot, arid ecosystems at low elevations to cool, mesic ecosystems at high elevation to test specific hypotheses related to how climatic controls over ecosystem processes change across this gradient. We have an eddy covariance tower and associated meteorological instruments in each biome which we are using to directly measure the exchange of carbon, water and energy between the ecosystem and the atmosphere. We perform<br> microsecond molecular dynamics simulations of the inactive enzyme form bound to a<br> bisubstrate inhibitor that was shown experimentally to activate another TK1-like kinase,<br> Thermotoga maritima TK (TmTK). Our results are in excellent agreement with the<br> experimental findings for the TmTK closed-to-open state transition. We show that the inhibitor<br> induces an increase of the enzyme radius of gyration due to the expansion on one of the dimer<br> interfaces; the structural changes observed, including the active site pocket volume increase,<br> decrease in monomer-monomer buried surface area and of the number of hydrogen bonds (as<br> compared to the inactive enzyme control simulation), show that the catalytically competent<br> (open) conformation of hTK1 can be assumed in the presence of an activating ligand.</p>

<p>This deposit contains data from Monte-Carlo and Langevin simulations of the SU(2) Higgs model, related to the paper "First-order electroweak phase transitions: a nonperturbative update". Everything is contained within the archive file <em>su2higgs_data.tar.gz</em>, a tarball compressed with Gzip.</p> <p>The data covers four equilibrium quantities: the critical mass, the jump in the quadratic Higgs condensate, the jump in the quartic Higgs condensate, and the surface tension. It also includes data for the bubble nucleation rate. Further details on the contents of the dataset are explained in README.md.</p>
First-order electroweak phase transitions: a nonperturbative update, videos
<p>This deposit contains videos created from Monte-Carlo and Langevin simulations of the SU(2) Higgs model, related to the paper "First-order electroweak phase transitions: a nonperturbative update". There are two videos, both in MPEG-4 format. Both files show data at the parameter point <span class="math-tex">\(x=0.0152473\)</span>, <span class="math-tex">\(y=0.0303620\)</span>, <span class="math-tex">\(ag_3^2= 4/7.332605\)</span>, <span class="math-tex">\(L=60a\)</span>, <span class="math-tex">\(\eta=10\)</span>, using the notation of the paper.</p> <p>The file <em>smoothing.mp4</em> shows the process of smoothing, or coarse-graining, the Higgs field, according to the method described in the section "Visualising bubble nucleation" of the paper. The particular configuration chosen is from the separatrix between phases, i.e. it is a critical bubble.</p> <p>The file <em>trajectory.mp4</em> shows a trajectory of the Langevin time evolution of a configuration starting in the symmetric phase and nucleating into the broken phase. The configurations in this trajectory have been smoothed, or coarse-grained, 10 times.</p>
