Dataset of "Glue-assisted Exfoliation of Two-dimensional Sulfur-rich Niobium Thiophosphate (Nb4P2S21) for Sulfur-equivalent Electrode Study in Lithium Storage"

Two-dimensional (2D) layered thiophosphates have garnered attention for advanced batteries due to their open ionic diffusion channels, high capacity, and unique catalytic properties. However, their potential in energy storage applications remains largely unexplored. In this study, we report for the first time a 2D transition metal thiophosphate (Nb4P2S21) with high sulfur content. Nb4P2S21, synthesized via chemical vapor transport (CVT), is treated as a sulfur-equivalent material with better conductivity than sulfur, suitable for high-capacity lithium storage. The bulk material can be delaminated into high-quality nanoplates via glue-assisted grinding exfoliation, both displaying a layered quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) morphology, which shortens the ion diffusion path and promises enhanced rate performance compared to larger lateral 2D materials. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that Nb4P2S21 has a direct bandgap of 1.64 eV (HSE06 method), with exfoliated counterparts showing near-infrared (NIR) photoluminescence at 755 nm, broadening potential applications to NIR-based devices. By tuning the working voltage window for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and controlling lithiation product formation, the material exhibits distinct electrochemical characteristics at 0 ~ 2.6 V, 0.5 ~ 2.6 V, 1.0 ~ 2.6 V, and 1.5 ~ 2.6 V. However, sulfur-rich electrodes in carbonate electrolytes demonstrate limited electrochemical potential due to polysulfide formation, leading to detrimental side reactions with carbonate-based electrolytes. Transitioning to ether-based electrolytes improves the initial reversible capacity and Coulombic efficiency of Nb4P2S21 by stabilizing the formed polysulfides. Despite this improvement, the material still mirrors the shuttle effect in lithium-sulfur batteries, diminishing active sulfur and undermining battery integrity. Further EDS and TOF-SIMS analyses of post-cycled electrode materials show significant sulfur loss and precipitation within the electrodes, exacerbating the shuttle effect and causing battery failure. Implementing strategies used in lithium-sulfur batteries, such as introducing polar host catalysts, could enhance the potential of these materials.

Supporting data for manuscript "Geochemical Characterization of Insoluble Particle Clusters in Ice Cores Using Two-dimensional Impurity Imaging"

Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) offers micron-resolution 2D chemical imaging, which has been adapted recently to ice core analysis. The datasets are supporting information for the manuscript "Geochemical Characterization of Insoluble Particle Clusters in Ice Cores Using Two-dimensional Impurity Imaging" accepted for publication at Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems (10.1029/2022GC010595). Measurements were performed at the Ca’Foscari University of Venice, considered as analytes are 23Na, 24Mg, 27Al, 29Si, 43Ca, 56Fe and 88Sr. Background and drift correction as well as image construction were performed using the software HDIP (Teledyne Photon Machines, Bozeman, MT, USA). Impurity maps are acquired as a pattern of lines, without overlap in the direction perpendicular to that of the scan, and without any further spatial interpolation. In a sample of the EGRIP Greenland ice core (from about 1256.95 m depth), maps were obtained over 3 adjacent areas. For each of the maps, for every chemical channel the intensities (in counts, after background and drift correction) are provided as a separate file, named as “ds01_Area1_Na.csv”, etc. These maps were obtained using a 20 µm square spot. This data can be used to obtain the images shown in the manuscript. For the additional map shown as Figure 9 in the manuscript, data were obtained using a LA-ICP-TOFMS for imaging a sample of the last glacial period in the EPICA Dome C (EDC) ice core, bag 1065. The maps were acquired using a 35 µm square spot, with 50% overlap between neighboring pixels to increase the spatial resolution horizontally.

Data of the publication "Absence of Localization in Two-Dimensional Clifford Circuits"

We analyze a Floquet circuit with random Clifford gates in one and two spatial dimensions. By using
random graphs and methods from percolation theory, we prove in the two-dimensional (2D) setting that
some local operators grow at a ballistic rate, which implies the absence of localization. In contrast, the
one-dimensional model displays a strong form of localization, characterized by the emergence of left- and
right-blocking walls in random locations. We provide additional insights by complementing our analytical results with numerical simulations of operator spreading and entanglement growth, which show the
absence (presence) of localization in two dimensions (one dimension). Furthermore, we unveil how the
spectral form factor of the Floquet unitary in 2D circuits behaves like that of quasifree fermions with
chaotic single-particle dynamics, with an exponential ramp that persists up to times scaling linearly with
the size of the system. Our work sheds light on the nature of disordered Floquet Clifford dynamics and
their relationship to fully chaotic quantum dynamics.

Two-dimensional Xene Heterostructures by Epitaxy

The synthesis of new Xenes and their potential applications prototypes have achieved significant milestones so far. However, to date the realization of Xene heterostructures in analogy with the well-known van der Waals heterostructures remains an unresolved issue. Here, we introduce a Xene heterostructure concept based on the epitaxial combination of silicene and stanene on Ag(111), and demonstrate how one Xene layer enables another Xene layer of different nature to grow on top. We synthesized single-phase (4 x 4) silicene using stanene as a template, and managed to grow stanene on top of silicene on the other way around. In both heterostructures in situ and ex situ probes confirm layer-by-layer growth without intercalations and intermixing. Modelling via Density Functional Theory (DFT) shows that the atomic layers in the heterostructures are strongly interacting and hexagonal symmetry conservation in each individual layer is sequence-selective. Our results provide a substantial step towards currently missing Xene heterostructures and open the door to a new frontier of atomic-scale materials engineering.
