Data from: Proximate and ultimate drivers of variation in bite force in the insular lizards Podarcis melisellensis and Podarcis sicula
<p>Bite force is a key performance trait in lizards since biting is involved in many ecologically relevant tasks, including foraging, fighting, and mating. Several factors have been previously suggested to impact bite force in lizards, such as head morphology (proximate factors), or diet, intraspecific competition, and habitat characteristics (ultimate factors). However, these have been generally investigated separately and mostly at the interspecific level. We tested which factors drive variation in bite force at the population level and to what extent. Our study includes 20 populations of two closely-related lacertid species, <i>Podarcis melisellensis </i>and <i>Podarcis sicula</i>, which inhabit islands in the Adriatic. We found that lizards with more forceful bites have relatively wider and taller heads, and consume more hard prey and plant material. Island isolation correlates with bite force, likely by driving the resource availability. Bite force is only poorly explained by proxies of intraspecific competition. The linear distance from a large island and the proportion of difficult-to-reduce food items consumed are the ultimate factors that explain most of the variation in bite force. Our findings suggest that the way in which morphological variation affects bite force is species-specific, likely reflecting the different selective pressures operating on the two species.</p>

Ontogeny of hepatic metabolism in two broiler lines divergently selected for the ultimate pH of the Pectoralis major muscle
<p>Nutrient availability during early stages of development (embryogenesis and the first week of life) can have long-term effects on physiological functions and bird metabolism. The embryo develops in a closed structure and depends entirely on the nutrients and energy available in the egg. The aim of this study was to describe the ontogeny of pathways governing hepatic metabolism that mediates many physiological functions in the pHu+ and pHu- chicken lines, which are divergently selected for the ultimate pH of meat, a proxy for muscle glycogen stores, and which differ in the nutrient content and composition of eggs. Our study provides the first detailed description of the evolution of different hepatic metabolic pathways during the early development of embryos and post-hatching chicks. We found a metabolic orientation for the pHu+ line towards proteolysis, glycogen degradation, ATP synthesis and autophagy, likely in response to a higher energy requirement compared with pHu- embryos. The metabolic orientations specific to the pHu+ and pHu- lines are established very early, probably in relation with their different genetic background and available nutrients.</p>
Proximal and ultimate influences on planform change in Bayou Pierre, Mississippi
<p>Channel incision and associated planform changes are widespread in the Gulf Coastal Plain of the United States, following a century of sediment reduction activities. These processes cause numerous threats to infrastructure, social, and ecological systems. While the drivers of channel incision are well documented for some watersheds in the region, others remain understudied. Bayou Pierre, Mississippi, is a small watershed draining directly to the lower Mississippi River with a contentious debate regarding origins of erosional processes. The watershed is home to one listed species (Bayou Darter <em>Nothonotus rubrus</em>) as well as a diverse aquatic biota assemblage. Determining potential drivers of erosional activities in the watershed will be critical for effective mitigation or restoration activities. This dataset compiles information from numerous other datasets to construct histories of Mississippi River architectural change, land use change, and climate patterns to construct a history of potential erosional influences in the watershed. It further contains original measurements of planform dynamics over a sixty year period, and analyses of how changes to planform relate to recent and historical influences. In addition, a secondary assessment of both accuracy and precision of measurement methods are included. </p>

Evolution of allele frequencies in two chicken lines divergently selected for meat ultimate pH
<p>Two lines of chicken were divergently selected during 5 generations for high or low meat ultimate pH. Genotypes at about 50K SNPs were obtained for a sample of individuals in each line and at each generation (including the founder population G0). The present dataset provides the allele frequencies for all SNP and generations in the two lines, at plink frq.strat format. Ultimate strength assessment of stiffened panel using non-linear mechanical behavior of an equivalent single layer: grillage FE model used for analysis
<p>This example shows how the ESL can be applied in the ultimate strength structural analysis in Abaqus finite element software. In other words, ESL methodology is applied only in some parts of the structure while larger structural supporting components like girders and webframes are still modeled explicitly. Ultimate load of randomly sampled stainless steel frames under gravity plus wind loads

Data from: Vaginal host immune-microbiome interactions in a cohort of primarily African-American women who ultimately underwent spontaneous preterm birth or delivered at term
<p><strong>Background</strong>: Recent studies suggest that alterations in the vaginal microbiome allow for the assessment of the risk for spontaneous preterm birth (PTB), the leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality worldwide. However, the associations between the local immune response and the vaginal microbiome are still poorly understood. Herein, we characterize the vaginal host immune-microbiome interactions in women who ultimately underwent PTB and in those who delivered at term.</p> <p><strong>Methods</strong>: Vaginal fluid samples from 52 pregnant women (of whom 18 underwent PTB and 34 delivered at term) were collected from 10-32 weeks in a case-control study. Concentrations of 33 immune mediators were determined using sensitive and specific immunoassays. The previously published 16S rRNA gene sequence and bacterial phylotype data of these subjects were utilized in this study. Linear mixed effects models were utilized to test associations between vaginal immune mediator concentrations and bacterial phylotype relative abundances.</p> <p><strong>Results</strong>: 1) Specific immune mediators (β-defensins 2 and 3, IL-1β, CXCL10, CCL2, CCL3, SLPI, and VEGF) correlated with 18 different vaginal bacterial phylotypes in the overall study population; 2) vaginal concentrations of CXCL10, CCL2, CCL3, SLP1 and VEGF negatively correlated with non-Lactobacillus members of the vaginal microbiome; 3) vaginal concentrations of CXCL10 were negatively correlated with 15 bacterial phylotypes, most of which are typical members of Community State Type IV of the vaginal microbiome, such as Gardnerella vaginalis, Megasphaera sp. type 1, and Atopobium vaginae; 4) Gemella spp. were negatively correlated with vaginal concentrations of VEGF, CCL2, CCL3, SLPI, and CXCL10; 5) when comparing PTB cases to term controls, five soluble immune mediators (CCL26, CCL22 and CCL2, CXCL10 and IL-16), and especially CCL26, were negatively correlated with five typical members of Community State Type IV: Sneathia sanguinegens, Parvimonas micra, Veillonellaceae, BVAB2, and Gemella spp; and 6) Sneathia sanguinegens had stronger negative associations with all five soluble immune mediators (CCL26, CCL22 and CCL2, CXCL10 and IL-16) in PTB cases than in term controls.</p> <p><strong>Conclusions</strong>: The assessment of vaginal host immune-microbiome interactions revealed that specific soluble immune mediators, mainly CXCL10, negatively correlated with typical members of Community State Type IV of the vaginal microbiome. In addition, this assessment particularly showed that Sneathia sanguinegens had stronger negative associations with different immune mediators, including CXCL10 and CCL26, in women who ultimately had a PTB compared to those who delivered at term. These findings provide insight into the vaginal host immune-microbiome interactions in normal and complicated pregnancies.</p>
