Data for: The relationships of breeding stage to daytime singing behaviour and song perch height in Bermuda White-eyed Vireos (Vireo griseus bermudianus)

<p><span>Bird song is crucial for attracting mates and defending territories, but different types of song or different singing behaviours may be involved in acquiring or maintaining each resource. Furthermore, male songbirds may adjust when and where they sing throughout the breeding season, depending on their breeding stage. However, such relationships remain untested in several avian taxa. Here, we studied male Bermuda White-eyed Vireos (<em>Vireo griseus bermudianus</em>), a passerine with two distinct song types (discrete and rambling), to test the mate attraction and territory defence hypotheses. We compare song production and song perch height among different stages of the breeding season and during the non-breeding season. We show that male vireos produce both song types during the breeding and non-breeding seasons, suggesting dual roles in mate choice and territorial defence. Song production did not differ significantly between the breeding and non-breeding seasons, but, within the breeding season, males without nesting duties sang significantly more songs than males with nesting duties. Song perch height was higher during the breeding season versus non-breeding season, among males without nesting duties compared to males with nesting duties, and when males produced discrete versus rambling songs. Our findings suggest that male vireos increase their conspicuousness to prospecting females by increasing song production and song perch height, and that they sing during the breeding and non-breeding seasons to defend year-round territories. Collectively, our study supports the mate attraction and territory defence hypotheses of bird song.</span></p>

Data from: How far is too close? Restricted, sex-biased dispersal in black-capped vireos

Understanding the interplay of dispersal and how it translates into gene flow is key to understanding population processes, and especially so for endangered species occupying fragmented habitats. In migratory songbirds, there is evidence that long-distance movement capabilities are not highly related to observed dispersal. Our objectives were to 1) define the fine-scale spatial genetic structure in the endangered black-capped vireos to shed light on dispersal patterns, and 2) to relate dispersal dynamics to overall population genetic structure using a simulation approach. We sampled 160 individuals over two years to describe the fine-scale genetic structuring, and used this information to model scenarios to compare with actual data on change in population structuring over a 100-year interval. We found that black-capped vireo exhibit male-philopatry, and restricted dispersal distances, relative to females. Our simulations support a sex-biased dispersal model. Additionally, we find that fragmentation related changes in rates of dispersal might be a likely cause for increasing levels of population structure over a 100-year period. We show that restricted dispersal can explain population structuring in this species, and that changes in dispersal rates due to fragmentation may be a continuing threat to genetic viability in this species.

Data from: Cryptic speciation and gene flow in a migratory songbird species complex: insights from the red-eyed vireo (Vireo olivaceus)

Migratory species that alternate between sympatry and allopatry over the course of an annual cycle are promising subjects for studies seeking to understand the process of speciation in the absence of strict geographic isolation. Here we sought to identify cryptic species and assess rates of gene flow in a clade of neotropical migrant songbirds in which geography and taxonomy are currently out of sync: the Red-Eyed Vireo (V. olivaceus) Species Complex. Phylogenetic, clustering, and statistical species delimitation analyses found that V. olivaceus includes two non-sister lineages migrating in opposite directions across the equator. Analyses of gene flow identified low levels of introgression between two species pairs, but none between northern and southern olivaceus. We also identified substantial well-supported conflicts between nuclear and mitochondrial topologies. Although the geographic distribution of mito-nuclear discordance is suggestive of hybridization and mitochondrial capture, we found no evidence of introgression in the nuclear genome of populations with discordant mitochondrial gene trees. Our study finds that species boundaries match breeding range and migratory phenology rather than the existing taxonomy in this group, and demonstrates the utility of genomic data in inferring species boundaries in recently diverged clades.

Do habitat and elevation promote hybridization during secondary contact between three genetically distinct groups of warbling vireo (Vireo gilvus)?

<p>Following postglacial expansion, secondary contact can occur between genetically distinct lineages. These genetic lineages may be associated with specific habitat or environmental variables and therefore, their distributions in secondary contact could reflect such conditions within these areas. Here we used mtDNA, microsatellite, and morphological data to study three genetically distinct groups of warbling vireo (Vireo gilvus) and investigate the role that elevation and habitat play in their distributions. We studied two main contact zones and within each contact zone, we examined two separate transects. Across the Great Plains contact zone, we found that hybridization between eastern and western groups occurs along a habitat and elevational gradient, whereas hybridization across the Rocky Mountain contact zone was not as closely associated with habitat or elevation. Hybrids in the Great Plains contact zone were more common in transitional areas between deciduous and mixed-wood forests, and at lower elevations (&lt;1000 m). Hybridization patterns were similar along both Great Plains transects indicating that habitat and elevation play a role in hybridization between distinct eastern and western genetic groups. The observed patterns suggest adaptation to different habitats, perhaps originating during isolation in multiple Pleistocene refugia, is facilitating hybridization in areas where habitat types overlap.</p>
