Comparing the representation of a simple visual stimulus across the cerebellar network [dataset]

<p>This repository contains all the raw data that has been used to generate the figures in the paper &quot;Comparing the representation of a simple visual stimulus across the cerebellar network&quot;.<br> To use the dataset, select all 10 .zip files provided here and unpack them simultaneously.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>The dataset contains the following folders:</p> <ul> <li>freely_swimming_beh folder contains the data for the freely swimming behavior experiments. Inside, subfolders for each behavioral experiment run can be found, containing the experiment metadata and the behavioral log.</li> <li>flashes folder contains the data for the imaging experiments with the FLASHES protocol. Within this folder, three subfolders can be found with the data for each one of the three different types of imaged cell types (GCs, IONs and PCs). Within those subfolders, a folder for each imaged fish can be found, containing a data dictionary with the extracted ROI traces, and a folder with the experiment metadata.</li> <li>steps folder contains the data for the imaging experiments with the STEPS protocol. Within this folder, three subfolders can be found with the data for each one of the three different types of imaged cell types (GCs, IONs and PCs). <p>The experience that is accumulated regarding the modelling paradigms in the software engineering is impressive. Thus, the software engineering recognizes modelling paradigms like object orientation, aspect orientation, component orientation, service orientation, agent orientation. In one form or another, these paradigms prove their ex- cellence in certain types of IT projects. At the same time, these paradigms reveal their objective limits when they are used to engineer the real world software systems. Every modelling paradigm represents, in fact, a modality to represent the real world using a specific formal framework. The specificity of the formal framework is defined from both a syntactic and semantic perspective. The &nbsp;formal syntactic framework of a paradigm refers to the &nbsp;concepts that are &nbsp;used &nbsp;by the &nbsp;paradigm in &nbsp;order to represent the &nbsp;real &nbsp;world, &nbsp;but &nbsp;also &nbsp;to the recommended principles that allow &nbsp;for these concepts to interact in a correct and &nbsp;efficient manner. Both the concepts and the principles benefit from a formal representation that ultimately favours communication as a secondary modelling lever inside the IT projects. Every syntactic artefact of a paradigm can be associated with a certain real world semantics, which it abstracts. As a consequence, considering that the real world continuously enhances its semantic potential, the syntactic constructs that are favoured by the paradigm may become problematic.</p>

Representations of color and form in mouse visual cortex

<p>Spatial transitions in color can aid any visual perception task, and its neural representation – an "integration of color and form" – is thought to begin at primary visual cortex (V1). Color and form integration is untested in mouse V1, yet studies show that the ventral retina provides the necessary substrate from green-sensitive rods and UV-sensitive cones. Here, we used two-photon imaging in V1 to measure spatial frequency (SF) tuning along four axes of rod and cone contrast space, including luminance and color. We first reveal that V1 has similar responsiveness to luminance and color, yet average SF tuning is significantly shifted lowpass for color. Next, guided by linear models, we used SF tuning along all four color axes to estimate the proportion of neurons that fall into classic models of color opponency – "single-", "double-", and "non-opponent". Few neurons (~6%) fit the criteria for double-opponency, which are uniquely tuned for chromatic borders. Most of the population can be described as a unimodal distribution ranging from strongly single-opponent to non-opponent. Consistent with recent studies of the rodent and primate retina, our V1 data is well-described by a simple model in which ON and OFF channels to V1 sample the photoreceptor mosaic randomly.</p>

"Not only faces": specialized visual representation of human hands revealed by adaptation

Classical neurophysiological studies demonstrated that the monkey brain is equipped with neurons selectively representing the visual shape of the primate hand. Neuroimaging in humans provided data suggesting that a similar representation can be found in humans. Here, we investigated selectivity of hand representation in humans by means of the visual adaptation technique. Results showed that participants' judgment of human-likeness of a visual probe representing a human hand was specifically reduced by a visual adaptation procedure when using a human hand adaptor but not when using an anthropoid robotic hand or a non-primate animal paw adaptor. Instead, human-likeness of the anthropoid robotic hand was affected by both human and robotic adaptors. No effect was found when using a non-primate animal paw as adaptor or probe. These results support the existence of specific neural mechanisms encoding human hand in the human's visual system.

Data from: Inhibition decorrelates visual feature representations in the inner retina

The retina extracts visual features for transmission to the brain. Different types of bipolar cell split the photoreceptor input into parallel channels and provide the excitatory drive for downstream visual circuits. Mouse bipolar cell types have been described at great anatomical and genetic detail, but a similarly deep understanding of their functional diversity is lacking. Here, by imaging light-driven glutamate release from more than 13,000 bipolar cell axon terminals in the intact retina, we show that bipolar cell functional diversity is generated by the interplay of dendritic excitatory inputs and axonal inhibitory inputs. The resulting centre and surround components of bipolar cell receptive fields interact to decorrelate bipolar cell output in the spatial and temporal domains. Our findings highlight the importance of inhibitory circuits in generating functionally diverse excitatory pathways and suggest that decorrelation of parallel visual pathways begins as early as the second synapse of the mouse visual system.
