Progressive Weakening of Granite via Piezoelectric Excitation of Quartz with Alternating Current: Experimental Dataset
<p><strong>Summary:</strong></p> <p>This article shares experimental data evidencing alternating-current (AC) induced weakening of Kuru granite specimens. This work reports the mechanical data of dynamic and quasi-static Brazilian Disc (BD) tensile tests. The dynamic BD tensile tests were performed in Split Hopkinson Pressure Bars (SHPB). Additionally, X-Ray Phase Contrast Imaging (XPCI) was used to evidence the fragmentation of BD samples loaded dynamically, and the resulting images are presented in this work in the form of videos. The original data used to attain the fragmentation videos of the BD specimens is available at https://doi.esrf.fr/10.15151/ESRF-ES-962080191. The dataset reported in this Zenodo publication corresponds to the study conducted by Rubio Ruiz et al. (2024). </p> <p><strong>Specimen Segmentation:</strong></p> <p>The granite specimens in this dataset are categorised into three distinct groups:</p> <p>1. Treated-Wet: Specimens subjected to high-voltage alternating current (HV-AC) treatment with direct exposure to dielectric fluid.</p> <p>2. Treated-Dry: Specimens subjected to HV-AC treatment without direct exposure to dielectric fluid.</p> <p>3. Non-Treated-Dry: Specimens that have not undergone any treatment and have not been exposed to dielectric fluid.</p> <p><strong>Included data:</strong></p> <p><strong>Quasi-static and Dynamic Brazilian Disc Test Results:</strong> The dataset consists of mechanical data obtained from dynamic and quasi-static Brazilian disc tests of each specimen type mentioned above. The data of the dynamic tests includes MATLAB figures (in .fig format), which display stress plotted against time. In addition, this dataset includes figures (in .fig format) depicting stress plotted against the dimensionless displacement parameter for both dynamic and quasi-static tests. This parameter is the ratio between the relative displacements of the loading bars and the specimen diameter.</p> <p><strong>Fragmentation Videos:</strong> This data set includes the XPCI-obtained videos capturing the fragmentation process of BD specimens in each specimen category.</p> <p><strong>References:</strong></p> <p>Rubio Ruiz RA, et al. Transcutaneous Kilohertz High-Frequency Alternating Current at 10 kHz for Upper-Limb Tremor in People with Parkinson's Disease: A double-blind, randomized, crossover study.
<p><strong><span>Abstract: <span>Background/Objectives:</span></span></strong><span> Preclinical studies have evidenced a peripheral nerve blockade with kilohertz high-frequency alternating current (KHFAC) stimulation. It could have a potential effect on aberrant nerve hyperactivity, such as tremor in people with Parkinson’s disease (PwPD). The objective was to investigate the effects of transcutaneous KHFAC at 10 kHz compared with sham intervention on tremor modulation, upper limb motor function, and adverse events in PwPD. <strong>Methods:</strong> This randomized, double-blind, crossover trial included PwPD, who received transcutaneous KHFAC and sham interventions, within a 48h washout period. Measurements were taken pre-intervention, during, immediately after, and 10 minutes post-intervention. The main outcomes were rest, postural, and kinetic tremor acceleration. Secondary outcomes were handgrip strength, nine-hole peg test (NHPT), movement onset time, and adverse events.<strong> </strong></span></p>
Effect of percutaneous electrical stimulation with high-frequency alternating currents at 30 kHz on the sensory-motor system of healthy volunteers.
<p>Unmodulated high-frequency alternating currents (HFAC) are employed for producing peripheral nerves block. HFAC have been applied in humans with frequencies up to 20 kHz, whether transcutaneously, percutaneously, or via surgically-implanted electrodes. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of percutaneous HFAC, applied with ultrasound-guided needles at 30 kHz, on the sensory-motor nerve conduction of healthy volunteers.</p>
SDM current and future projections for alternate CAM-based cultivation in SSA
<p class="MsoNormal">Globally we are facing an emerging climate crisis, with impacts to be notably felt in semi-arid regions across the world. Cultivation of drought-adapted succulent plants has been suggested as a nature-based solution that could: (i) reduce land degradation, (ii) increase agricultural diversification and provide both economic and environmentally sustainable income through derived bioproducts and bioenergy, (iii) help mitigate atmospheric CO<sub>2</sub> emissions, and (iv) increase soil sequestration of CO<sub>2</sub>. Identifying where succulents can grow and thrive is an important pre-requisite for the advent of a sustainable alternative 'bio-economy'. Here we first explore the viability of succulent cultivation in Africa under future climate projections to 2100 using species distribution modelling to identify climatic parameters of greatest importance and regions of environmental suitability. Minimum temperatures and temperature variability are shown to be key controls in defining the theoretical distribution of three succulent species explored, and <span>under both current and future SSP5 8.5 projections, the conditions required for growth of at least one of the species is met in most parts of sub-Saharan Africa. </span>These results are supplemented with an analysis of potentially <em>available</em> land for alternative succulent crop cultivation. <span>In total</span>, <span>up to 1.5 billion hectares could be considered ecophysiologically suitable and available for succulent cultivation due to projected declines in rangeland biomass and yields of traditional crops. These </span>findings may serve to highlight new opportunities for farmers, governments, and key stakeholders in the agriculture and energy sectors to invest in sustainable bioeconomic alternatives that deliver on environmental, social and economic goals.<span> </span></p>

Profitability of alternative battery operation strategies in pho-tovoltaic self-consumption systems under current regulatory framework and electricity prices in Spain
<p>The decreasing costs of solar photovoltaic (PV) technology have led to an exponential growth in the use of PV self-consumption systems. This development has encouraged the consideration of battery energy storage systems (BESS) as a potential means of achieving even more independence from the fluctuating grid electricity prices. As PV technology and energy storage costs continue to decline, both technologies will likely play an increasingly important role in the renewable energy sector.</p> <p>The profitability of batteries in PV self-consumption systems is largely influenced by the price of consumed electricity and the price at which surplus energy is remunerated. However, strategies in PV-BESS self-consumption systems typically do not take electricity prices into consideration as a variable for decision-making. This study simulates and analyzes battery operation strategies that take into account electricity prices. The simulations are performed using real industrial consumption data and real electricity prices and tariffs, they cover the entire lifespan of the batteries, and include aging and degradation due to use and cycling. A techno-economic model is used to evaluate the advantages of incorporating these battery operational strategies into an actual PV-BESS system. The results demonstrate that the proposed strategies enhance the savings that batteries can provide.</p>
