Process Simulation of Friction Extrusion of Aluminum alloys

The friction extrusion process (FEP) is a solid-state material processing technique in which a translating extrusion die is pressed against a billet/feedstock material in a rotating extrusion container to produce an extruded rod or wire. A key aspect of FEP is the non-equilibrium thermo-mechanical condition created at the contact region between the die and billet, leading to a possibly improved microstructure. Numerical simulations of FEP are highly complex due to contact between the tool and the workpiece, and interplay between thermo-mechanical conditions and the present severe plastic deformation. In the present work, a three-dimensional finite element model is developed to study the material flow behavior for different extrusion ratios for a 60° die angle during friction extrusion. The developed model is numerically validated against experimental data. The spatial temperature, strain and velocity distributions illustrate the effect of extrusion ratio on the deformation characteristics of the extruded aluminum alloys, thereby assisting in experimental microstructure interpretation.

Role of laser wobbling welding parameters in dissimilar welding of aluminum and copper alloys: general preliminary process window.

This database explores a wide range of process parameters concerning laser welding of aluminum and copper 0.3 mm thick foils in lap configuration. In particular, this application involves wobbling technique as a dynamic beam shaping for enhancing the formation of a correct interface width in this kind of welding. Given different values of laser power, wobbling tangential speed and wobbling diameter, the results are expressed in terms of weld bead width at the face of the weld bead, weld bead width at the interface between the two sheets and bead penetration depth in the lower sheet. Some trials gave an excessive penetration so that the specimen was cut in two separate parts after the process. This specific type of dissimilar welding is useful for enhancing "hybrid" characteristics of components, where a trade-off between mechanical and electrical or thermal characteristics is needed.

Ball-on-plate tribotesting of IVB element layers deposited on anodized aluminum alloys

This dataset contains a summary file (this one) and two spreadsheet files with coefficients of friction of anodic coatings with or without deposited layers of IVB elements, their oxides or selected other elements. Aluminum alloys 1050 and 6082 are used as substrates with 50 μm anodic coatings and 15-75 nm or higher thickness of the deposited layers. Corundum ball of 6 mm OD is used as a counter-body at 2 cm/s velocity under 1 N and 10 N loads. In this file, methodology, charts with coefficients of friction, X-ray reflectance data and calculations are provided to quantify the deposition rates on polished surfaces.

Influences of reinforcement and displacement rate on microstructure, mechanical properties and fracture behaviors of cylinder-head aluminum alloy

In the present work, the material microstructure, mechanical properties and fracture behaviors of cylinder-head aluminum alloys were experimentally investigated under different displacement rates and with and without the reinforcement. By the addition of nano-clay-particles and the heat treatment, it was tried to improve mechanical properties of the base material. For this objective, after the fabrication of as-cast and nano-composite samples, respectively by gravity and stir-casting; tensile testing was done on standard samples at the displacement rate of 0.1, 1 and 10 mm/min. Then, the sensitivity analysis was performed on experimental data to find quantitatively effects of two parameters of the reinforcement and the displacement rate. In addition, the optical microscopy and the field-emission scanning electron microscopy were utilized for the microstructure and the fracture surface, plus the energy dispersive X-ray analysis. Obtained results indicated that the microstructure of the aluminum alloy was finer due to the reinforcement. Besides, both the ultimate strength and the elongation enhanced. The regression analysis implied that the strength was sensitive only to the reinforcement. Although the elongation was sensitive to both the reinforcement and the displacement rate. Investigations of fracture surfaces showed brittle behaviors with cleavage and quasi-cleavage marks.
