Lichen abundance and biodiversity along a chronosequence from young managed stands to ancient forest, 1993 (Neitlich thesis)
The diversity of epiphytic lichens in old growth forests has stimulated considerable research (e.g., Howe 1978, Pike et al. 1975; Hoffman and Kazmierski 1969). We possess few data on the lichen communities of younger stands or the manner in which they develop as the forest ages. As our society grapples with the consequences of habitat loss and pressure on existing natural populations, such data are acutely needed (FEMAT 1993). This paper seeks to describe the relationship between forest age and the abundance and diversity of lichens in one region, and in doing so, to invite more rigorous assessment of the conservation needs of lichens with respect to forest management. Moveover, that documenting these patterns will facilitate research into age- related processes directly influencing lichen abundance and diversity.
Wooden steps to shallow depths: A new bathymodiolin mussel, Vadumodiolus teredinicola, inhabits shipworm burrows in an ancient submarine forest
<p>Large mussels of the mytilid subfamily Bathymodiolinae are common inhabitants of deep-sea hydrothermal vents and cold seeps, where gill-borne symbionts allow them to utilize energy-rich compounds such as hydrogen sulfide and methane to support abundant growth. This subfamily also includes smaller symbiont-bearing mussels found on deep-sea wood and organic deposits. Phylogenetic analyses suggest that wood association is ancestral to bathymodiolin evolution. This observation led to the "wooden steps" hypothesis, which proposed that wood and other large organic deposits have acted as evolutionary steppingstones, introducing the progenitors of the modern vent and seep Bathymodiolinae to their remote environments. Although this hypothesis implies an evolutionary trajectory from shallow to deep water, no bathymodiolin species that grows and reproduces at depths less than 100 m has yet been formally described. Here we describe a new bathymodiolin genus and species, <em>Vadumodiolus teredinicola, </em>found growing and reproducing at a depth of 18 m in uninhabited shipworm burrows in the remnants of an ancient submerged bald cypress forest off the coast of Alabama. These results demonstrate that the bathymodiolin radiation has not been limited to deep water and that specific association with wood has led to the successful invasion of both deep and shallow marine environments.</p>

Data from: Genomic data reveal ancient microendemism in forest scorpions across the California Floristic Province
The California Floristic Province (CFP) in western North America is a globally significant biodiversity hotspot. Elucidating patterns of endemism and the historical drivers of this diversity has been an important challenge of comparative phylogeography for over two decades. We generated phylogenomic data using ddRADseq to examine genetic structure in Uroctonus forest scorpions, an ecologically restricted and dispersal-limited organism widely distributed across the CFP north to the Columbia River. We coupled our genetic data with species distribution models (SDMs) to determine climatically suitable areas for Uroctonus both now and during the Last Glacial Maximum. Based on our analyses, Uroctonus is composed of two major genetic groups that likely diverged over 2 million years ago. Each of these groups itself contains numerous genetic groups that reveal a pattern of vicariance and microendemism across the CFP. Migration rates among these populations are low. SDMs suggest forest scorpion habitat has remained relatively stable over the last 21 000 years, consistent with the genetic data. Our results suggest tectonic plate rafting, mountain uplift, river drainage formation and climate-induced habitat fragmentation have all likely played a role in the diversification of Uroctonus. The intricate pattern of genetic fragmentation revealed across a temporal continuum highlights the potential of low-dispersing species to shed light on small-scale patterns of biodiversity and the underlying processes that have generated this diversity in biodiversity hotspots.

Ancient forest statistics (Daubrée statistics 1908, decennial agricultural statistics of 1892 and 1929) describing French forest area by department administrative units, ownership and forest management types
<p>This dataset provides three ancient forest statistics: i) the first comprehensive French forest statistics (termed <em>Daubrée</em> statistics), ii) the decennial agricultural statistics of 1892, iii) the decennial agricultural statistics of 1929. The three ancient statistics provide information about the French forest area and the annual forest volume harvested at the department administrative level (EU/EC NUTS-3 units) split by legal category of ownership and forest management type. Afforestation rates are provided at NUTS-3 level ( and split by legal category of ownership only in <em>Daubrée</em> statistics). Only in <em>Daubrée</em> statistics, the tree species-specific forest areas are also presented by NUTS-3 level and broken down by legal category of ownership. Finally, the number of private forest owners is indicated by NUTS-3 administrative level in 1929 statistics and in <em>Daubrée</em> statistics. This dataset can be used to understand the past forest dynamics, the impact of past forest policies on French forests, the evolution of major tree biodiversity in France.</p>
