Stable isotope and conservative tracer data used to estimate uptake of stream water dissolved organic carbon (DOC) through a whole-stream addition of a ¹³C-DOC tracer coupled with laboratory measurements of bioavailability of the tracer and stream water DOC using lability profiling with bioreactors

We performed a whole-stream addition of a ¹³C-DOC tracer and made laboratory measurements of the biological availability of the tracer as well as stream water DOC. The study was performed in October 2002 in a 1.27 km stretch of the third-order White Clay Creek in southeastern Pennsylvania. The tracer was prepared as a cold-water leachate of ¹³C-labeled tulip poplar saplings and it was added to the stream along with sodium bromide, a conservative tracer, over a 2-h period. Stream water samples were collected at 8 downstream stations over an 8-h period, filtered, and analyzed for concentrations of bromide and DOC. DOC was measured by Pt-catalyzed, persulfate oxidation, Br- was analyzed by ion chromatography, and C isotope samples were rotary evaporated, acidified, lyophilized, combusted, and the CO₂ analyzed with an elemental analyzer interfaced with an isotope ratio mass spectrometer. Lability profiling of the ¹³C-DOC tracer and stream water DOC were performed with a series of plug-flow bioreactors of increasing empty-bed contact times with the concentration of biodegradable DOC operationally defined as the difference between the DOC concentrations in the influent and effluent waters of the bioreactors. The bioreactor measurements were performed 2 days after the whole-stream release. Data were analyzed to estimate the uptake of stream water DOC associated with labile and semi-labile fraction of biodegradable DOC. <p><strong>Description</strong></p> <p><strong>The Interpolated Strontium Values dataset Ver. 3.1 </strong>presents the interpolated data of strontium isotopes for the southern Trans-Urals, based on the data gathered in 2020-2022. The current dataset consists of&nbsp;five sets of files for five various interpolations: based on grass, mollusks, soil, and water samples, as well as the average of three (excluding the mollusk dataset). Each of the five sets consists of a CSV file and a KML file where the interpolated values are presented to use with a GIS software (ordinary kriging, 5000 m x 5000 m grid). There are four sample types, such as wormwood (n = 103), leached soil (n = 103), water (n = 101), and freshwater mollusks (n = 80), collected to measure bioavailable strontium isotopes. The analysis of Sr isotopic composition was carried out in the cleanrooms (6 and 7 ISO classes) of the Geoanalitik shared research facilities of the Institute of Geology and Geochemistry, the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Ekaterinburg). Mollusk shell samples preliminarily cleaned with acetic acid, as well as vegetation samples rinsed with deionized water and ashed, were dissolved by open digestion in concentrated HNO 3 with the addition of H 2 O 2 on a hotplate at 150&deg;C. Water samples were acidified with concentrated nitric acid and filtered. To obtain aqueous leachates, pre-ground soil samples weighing 1 g were taken into polypropylene containers, 10 ml of ultrapure water was added and shaken in for 1 hour, after which they were filtered through membrane cellulose acetate filters with a pore diameter of 0.2 &mu;m. In all samples, the strontium content was determined by ICP-MS (NexION 300S). Then the sample volume corresponding to the Sr content of 600 ng was evaporated on a hotplate at 120&deg;C, and the precipitate was dissolved in 7M HNO 3. Sample solutions were centrifuged at 6000 rpm, and strontium was chromatographically isolated using SR resin (Triskem). The strontium isotopic composition was measured on a Neptune Plus multicollector mass spectrometer with inductively coupled plasma (MC-ICP-MS). To correct mass bias, a combination of bracketing and internal normalization according to the exponential law 88 Sr/ 86 Sr = 8.375209 was used. The results were additionally bracketed using the NIST SRM 987 strontium carbonate reference material using an average deviation from the reference value of 0.710245 for every two samples bracketed between NIST SRM 987 measurements. The long-term reproducibility of the strontium isotopic analysis was evaluated using repeated measurements of NIST SRM 987 during 2020-2022 and yielded 87 Sr/ 86 Sr = 0.71025, 2SD = 0.00012 (104 measurements in two replicates). The within-laboratory standard uncertainty (2&sigma;) obtained for SRM-987 was &plusmn; 0.003 %.&nbsp;</p>

Remarkable effects of microbial factors on soil phosphorus bioavailability: a country-scale study

<p><span>Low soil phosphorus (P) bioavailability causes the widespread occurrence of P-limited terrestrial ecosystems around the globe. Exploring the factors influencing soil P bioavailability at large spatial scales is critical for managing these ecosystems. However, previous studies have mostly focused on abiotic factors. In this study, we explored the effects of microbial factors on soil P bioavailability of terrestrial ecosystems using a <span>country</span><span>continental</span>-scale sampling effort. Our results showed that soil microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and acid phosphatase were important predictors of soil P bioavailability of agro- and natural ecosystems across China although they appeared less important than total soil P. The two microbial factors had a positive effect on soil P bioavailability of both ecosystem types and were able to mediate the effects of several abiotic factors (e.g., mean annual temperature). Meanwhile, we revealed that soil phytase could affect soil P bioavailability at the <span>country</span><span>continental</span> scale via ways similar to those of soil MBC and acid phosphatase, a pattern being more pronounced in agroecosystems than in natural ecosystems. Moreover, we obtained evidence for the positive effects of microbial genes encoding these enzymes on soil P bioavailability at the <span>country</span><span>continental </span>scale although their effect sizes varied between the two ecosystem types. Taken together, this study demonstrated the remarkable effects of microbial factors on soil P bioavailability at a large spatial scale, highlighting the importance to consider microbial factors in managing the widespread P-limited terrestrial ecosystems.</span></p>

Data from: Animal-mediated organic matter transformation: aquatic insects as a source of microbially bioavailable organic nutrients and energy

1. Animal communities are essential drivers of energy and elemental flow in ecosystems. However, few studies have investigated the functional role of animals as sources of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and the subsequent utilization of that DOM by the microbial community. 2. In a small forested headwater stream, we tested the effects of taxonomy, feeding traits, and body size on the quality and quantity of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) excreted by aquatic insects. In addition, we conducted steady-state solute additions to estimate instream demand for labile C and compared it to the C excreted by invertebrates. 3. Individual excretion rates and excretion composition varied with body size, taxonomy, and feeding guild. The estimated average community excretion rate was 1.31 μg DOC· per mg insect dry weight (DW)-1·h-1 and 0.33 μg DON·mg DW-1·h-1 and individuals excreted DON at nearly twice the rate of 〖"NH" 〗_"4" ^"+" . This DOM was 2-5 times more bioavailable to microbial heterotrophs than ambient stream water DOM. 4. We estimated that the insect community, conservatively, excreted 1.62 mg of bioavailable DOC·m-2·h-1 and through steady-state additions measured an ambient labile C demand as 3.97±0.67 mg C·m-2·h-1. This suggests that insect-mediated transformation and excretion of labile DOC could satisfy a significant fraction (40±7%) of labile C demand in this small stream. 5. Collectively, our results suggest that animal excretion plays an essential functional role in transforming organic matter into microbially bioavailable forms and may satisfy a variable but significant portion of microbial demand for labile C and N.

Data for: Responses of soil phosphorus cycling and bioavailability to plant invasion in river-lake ecotones

<p><span>The invasion of exotic plants in the river-lake ecotone has seriously affected the nutrient cycling processes in wetland soil. The South American species <em>Alternanthera philoxeroides</em> (Mart.) Griseb. is rapidly invading the river-lake ecotone in subtropical China, and has become the dominant species in the river-lake ecotone. However, there have been few studies on the effects of <em>A. philoxeroides</em> invasion on soil phosphorus (P) cycling and bioavailability in this ecotone. Herein, we measured the bioavailable P fractions, physicochemical properties and nutrient content in the surface soils of the native plant (<em>Zizania latifolia</em> (Griseb.) Turcz and <em>Nelumbo nucifera</em> Gaertn.) communities and the adjacent invasive <em>A. philoxeroides</em> communities in three river-lake ecotones with different nutrient substrates in the subtropical Dongting Lake basin over a three-year period to reveal the effects of <em>A. philoxeroides</em> invasion on the morphology and concentrations of soil bioavailable P. The principal coordinate analysis results showed that <em>A. philoxeroides</em> invasion significantly altered the bioavailable P concentrations in the soil of native plant communities in the different river-lake ecotones, and this effect was not disturbed by the heterogeneity of the soil matrix. However, the effects of invasion into different native plant communities on the fractions of soil bioavailable P were different. Compared with native <em>Z. latifolia</em> and <em>N. nucifera</em> communities, <em>A. philoxeroides</em> invasion increased the concentration of inorganic P by 39.5% and 3.7%, respectively, and the concentration of organic P decreased by 32.7% and 31.9%, respectively. Meanwhile, the invasion promoted P cycling and accumulation in the river-lake ecotone, which resulted in average decreases in the soil N:P and C:P ratios of 7.9% and 12.5%, respectively. These results highlight the impact of exotic plant invasions on nutrient cycling in wetland ecosystems in the river-lake ecotone, and this process may be detrimental to the late recovery of native plants.</span></p>
