Investigation of Radon Concentrations in some Coffee brands in Al-Muthanna Province/ South of Iraq

Background: Nowadays, drinking coffee has widely increased around the world. As explained by the study when the questionnaire was analyzed, Iraqis consume a huge amount of coffee. The first study in Iraq regarding radioactivity in coffee showed that the radon concentrations in coffee were within the allowed limitations set by the International Committee on Radiological Safety. However, this study examined only four brands of coffee in Mosul, north of Iraq. Therefore, there is no widely preliminary radiological data on coffee brands in Iraq.

Materials and Methods: This project was designed to demonstrate the radon contamination of coffee drunk in the Al-Muthanna province/south of Iraq. The method of this study includes a practical study to measure the percentage of radon gas in domestic and imported coffee using the nuclear effect detector (CR-39). 14 different brands of coffee were collected from Samawah Souq (the main market in the capital city of Al-Muthanna province). The long-term measurement method for the emission of alpha particles was adopted.

Results: The results showed that the highest radon gas concentration was in the coffee and seed samples imported from South Korea (16.95) Bq/ m3, while the lowest concentration was in the coffee sample imported from India, which was (4.23) Bq / m3. The laboratory radiological background was considered and calculated which was (3.39) Bq / m3.

Conclusions: In general, these data show that radon concentrations are not risky. It could be said that the differences in percentages may relate to the environmental conditions, natural and industrial factors in each country.
