Presolar Grain Database - Silicon Carbide

<p>The Presolar Grain Database (PGD) contains the vast majority of isotope data (published and unpublished) on presolar grains and was first released as a collection of spreadsheets in 2009. It has been a helpful tool used by many researchers in cosmochemistry and astrophysics. However, over the years, accumulated errors compromised major parts of the PGD. Here, we provide a fresh start, with the PGD for silicon carbide (SiC) grains rebuilt from the ground up.</p> <p>The PGD is provided here in two formats: (1) as Microsoft Excel (.xlsx) file, containing the main database as one large spreadsheet and additional information on extra spreadsheets, (2) as comma-separated ASCII (.csv) file containing the main database.</p> <p>The PGD is also available for graphite grains at the DOI&nbsp;<a href="../doi/10.5281/zenodo.11188115">10.5281/zenodo.11188115</a>.</p>

First-principles investigation of phase stability in substoichiometric zirconium carbide under high pressure

<p>This is a data set that supports a first-principles investigation into the phase stability of zirconium carbide under high pressure. High throughput density function theory data is used to train a cluster expansion. The trained model is used to sample the phase space of the substoichiometric ZrC system into high pressures. This sampling sheds insight on how pressure affects the stability and partial vacancy ordering in the ZrC system.</p>

Growth of carbon nanofibres on molybdenum carbide nanowires and their self-decoration with noble-metal nanoparticles

<p>High specific surface area makes carbon nanofibres suitable for catalyst support. Here we report on optimisation of carbon nanofibre (CNF) growth on molybdenum carbide nanowires (MoCNW) by direct carburization of Mo6S2I8 nanowire bundles. Typical CNFs obtained by this method are several hundreds of nanometres long at a diameter of 10-20 nm. We show that nanofibre growth does not depend on the initial morphology of the nanowires: nanofibres grow on individual bundles of MoCNW, on dense networks of nanowires deposited on silicon substrate, and on free-standing nanowire foils. We find that carbon nanofibres remain firmly attached to the nanowires even if they are modified into Mo2C and further into MoS2 nanowires. The method thus enables production of a novel hybrid material composed of MoS2 nanowires densely covered with carbon nanofibres. We have additionally shown that the obtained CNFs can easily be self-decorated with platinum nanoparticles with diameters of several nanometres directly from water solution at room temperature without reducing agents. Such efficient synthesis and decoration process yield hybrid platinum/CNF/molybdenum-based NW materials, which are a promising material for a wide range of possible future applications, including sensitive sensorics and improved catalysis.</p>
