Adelie penguin 1:2 chick nest ratio, 1991-2024
The fundamental long-term objective of the seabird component of the Palmer LTER (PAL) has been to identify and understand the mechanistic processes that regulate the mean fitness (population growth rate) of regional penguin populations. Since the inception of PAL, Adélie penguin populations have effectively collapsed, gentoo penguin populations have increased dramatically and chinstrap penguin populations have remained relatively stable. These trends are spatially and temporally coherent with regional warming and decreasing sea ice duration. Adélie penguins are an ice-obligate polar species whose life history is intimately linked to the presence of sea ice, while chinstrap and gentoo penguins are ice-intolerant species whose life histories evolved in the sub-Antarctic, where sea ice is a less permanent feature of the marine ecosystem. The PAL study region includes five main islands on which Adélie penguin colonies have historically occurred, with each island containing a different number of spatially segregated sub-colonies. These colonies are censused to determine the total number of nests and chicks produced each year, and breeding success. Diet samples are acquired to understand diet composition (e.g., krill, fish) and krill length-frequencies. In general, krill constitute the most important component of the summer diets by mass of these three penguin species, but changes in PAL krill abundances have exhibited no long-term trends and thus far, have failed to explain the divergent patterns in penguin populations evident in our time series. Chick fledging masses are recorded as a cumulative measure of climate, weather, diet, and parental influences on chick health at the end of the breeding season. These data have provided valuable insights into the marine and terrestrial factors that influence Adélie penguin population fitness. No data were collected during the 2021-2022 season due to the Palmer Station pier rebuild.

Chick Call Dataset
<p>Chick Call Dataset comprises recordings for chick vocalization analysis. It contains recordings and call annotations of domestic chicks from the Ross 308 strain of the species Gallus gallus. The audio was recorded by placing one chick at a time in an arena within 12 hours after their hatching. All data was recorded at a sampling rate of 44.1kHz/16bits. Fitness benefits of alternated chick provisioning in cooperatively breeding carrion crows
<p>In most bird species, parents raise offspring cooperatively. In some cases, this cooperation extends to helpers-at-the-nest who assist the breeders with a range of tasks. While cooperative food provisioning might merely arise incidentally, as a result of the efforts of carers that act independently from each other, recent studies suggest that birds may coordinate by taking turns in visiting the nest. However, evidence that such coordination emerges because individuals actively respond to each other's behaviour is controversial, and the potential benefits of carers' alternation remain unknown. We addressed this knowledge gap by analysing a multi-year dataset for cooperatively breeding carrion crows, <em>Corvus corone</em>, comprising 8,693 nest visits across 50 groups. Our results reveal that turn taking does occur in this species and that all group members, regardless of their sex and social role (breeder/helper), tend to alternate at the nest with other carers rather than to make repeat visits. Importantly, we found that the body mass of nestlings increased significantly with the degree of carers' alternation, possibly because well-coordinated groups provided food at more regular intervals. Using earlier monitoring data, the observed increase in body mass is predicted to substantially boost post-fledging survival rates. Our analyses demonstrate that alternation in nestling provisioning has measurable fitness benefits in this study system. This raises the possibility that cooperatively breeding carrion crows, as well as other bird species with similarly coordinated brood provisioning, exhibit specialized behavioural strategies that enable effective alternation.</p>
Fledging of Leach's Storm-Petrel chicks from Gull Island
<p>We used passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags to track the exact time and date that Leach's Storm-Petrel (<em>Hydrobates leucorhous</em>) chicks fledged from their burrow. The data included here are the last read for each of 123 chicks tracked in 2017, 2018, 2021, and 2022 on Gull Island, Witless Bay Ecological Reserve, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. We also include morphometric measurements of each chick that was banded and tagged for this study.</p>

Lake Chany is located in the Baraba forest-steppe of the West Siberian Plain, Russia, between the Ob and Irtish rivers. Lake Chany is protected by the Ramsar Convention on the Wetlands of International Importance, indicating that the lake is an important site for migratory birds, including L. ichthyaetus. This dataset contains the size and fate of all eggs, as well as the size of hatched chicks in 1164 observed L. ichthyaetus nests from 1993 to 2003.</p>

Egg and chick size in the nests of common gulls in Lake Chany, West Siberia, Russia from 1993 to 2011
<p>A long-term study of breeding ecology of gulls has been carried in the area of Lake Chany. Lake Chany is located in the Baraba forest-steppe of the West Siberian Plain, Russia, between the Ob and Irtysh rivers. The Lake is protected by the Ramsar Convention on the Wetlands of International Importance, indicating that the lake is an important site for migrating and breeding birds, including the Common gull <em>Larus canus </em>(Linnaeus, 1758). We provided data on the size and fate of all eggs as well as the size of hatched chicks in Common gull nests from 1993 to 2011. The data can be used to assess how environmental changes caused by human activity, including global warming, affect the reproduction and population dynamics of migratory birds. </p>

Exploring the mechanisms of coordinated chick provisioning in the Manx shearwater (Puffinus puffinus)
<p>Many species that provide care for their offspring in tandem with a partner coordinate their activities to maximise the efficiency of their investment. However, it is not well known exactly how this coordination is achieved. Manx shearwaters <i>Puffinus puffinus </i>are Procellariiform seabirds that exhibit a dual foraging strategy during chick provisioning in which long foraging trips to maintain condition are alternated with short, frequent trips to feed the offspring. This strategy is employed in a coordinated manner between the parents, with one making short trips while the other takes a single long trip. Previous work revealed that a complementary switch in foraging trip type is initiated by the parents following a synchronous visit to the nest. We used a combination of observational data and an experimental manipulation to examine the mechanisms that may underlie this behaviour. Specifically, we investigated the evidence that physical reunion is necessary to induce a switch in trip type, whether parents change their behaviour to maximise the probability of partner encounter, and whether indirect cues gained from the chick could inform a switch in behaviour. In our experimental approach, we manipulated the information adults had available to them by supplementarily feeding chicks to alter their begging behaviour. We found no support for the role of physical reunion or indirect cues in the coordination of care in this species. We discuss the possibility that the patterns of alternated provisioning observed during chick rearing in Manx shearwaters may emerge through entrainment during the well-coordinated incubation period preceding chick provisioning.</p>
