Historical Local Climate Zones (LCZ) maps for Hong Kong (1845-2000)

This dataset contains GIS maps of the historical urbanization of Hong Kong at 12 timeslices from 1845-2000 (1845, 1888, 1895, 1913, 1938, 1945, 1952, 1961, 1975, 1984, 1995, and 2000). These maps were compiled through classification of historical map material, photographs, paintings, and contemporary textual accounts. The maps describe the land cover of the historical urban core of the territory of Hong Kong: Victoria City on Hong Kong Island, and the Kowloon Peninsula on the mainland. Urban form is described in terms of the Local Climate Zones (LCZ) scheme presented by Stewart & Oke (2012).

The dataset is currently in the format of a QGIS archive, but other file formats will be made available in the future and can be requested from the authors at any time.

For further details on the process of generating the maps and their application, please see Yee and Kaplan (2022).

Yee, M., & Kaplan, J. Global map of Local Climate Zones

A global 100 m spatial resolution Local Climate Zone (LCZ) map, derived from multiple earth observation datasets and expert LCZ class labels.

The LCZ map is based on the LCZ typology (Stewart and Oke, 2012) that distinguish urban surfaces accounting for their typical combination of micro-scale land-covers and associated physical properties. The LCZ scheme is distinguished from other land use / land cover schemes by its focus on urban and rural landscape types, which can be described by any of the 17 classes in the LCZ scheme.

Out of the 17 LCZ classes, 10 reflect the 'built' environment, and each LCZ type is associated with generic numerical descriptions of key urban canopy parameters critical to model atmospheric responses to urbanisation. In addition, since LCZs were originally designed as a new framework for urban heat island studies (Stewart and Oke, 2012), they also contain a limited set (7) of 'natural' land-cover classes that can be used as 'control' or 'natural reference' areas. As these seven natural classes in the LCZ scheme can not capture the heterogeneity of the world’s existing natural ecosystems, we advise users - if required - to combine the built LCZ classes with any other land-cover product that provides a wider range of natural land-cover classes.

Stewart ID, Oke TR. High resolution maps of climatological parameters for analyzing the impacts of climatic changes on Swiss forests

Assessing the impacts of climatic changes on forests requires the analysis of actual climatology within the forested area. In mountainous areas, climatological indices vary markedly with the micro-relief, i.e. with altitude, slope, and aspect. Consequently, when modelling potential shifts of altitudinal belts in mountainous areas due to climatic changes, maps with a high spatial resolution of the underlying climatological indices are fundamental. Here we present a set of maps of climatological indices with a spatial resolution of 25 by 25 m. The presented dataset consists of maps of the following parameters: average daily temperature high and low in January, April, July, and October as well as of the year; seasonal and annual thermal continentality; first and last freezing day; frost-free vegetation period; relative air humidity; solar radiation; and foehn conditions. The parameters represented in the maps have been selected in a knowledge engineering approach. The maps show the climatology of the periods 1961-1990 and 1981-2010. The data can be used for statistical analyses of forest climatology, for developing tree distribution models, and for assessing the impacts of climatic changes on Swiss forests.

Mapping the landscape of climate services

Climate services are technology-intensive, science-based and user-tailored tools providing timely climate information to a wide set of users. They accelerate innovation, while contributing to societal adaptation. Research has explored the advancements of climate services in multiple fields, producing a wealth of interdisciplinary knowledge ranging from climatology to the social sciences. The aim of this paper is to map the global landscape of research on climate services and to identify patterns at individual, affiliation and country level and the structural properties of each community. We use a sample of 358 records published between 1974 and 2018 and quantitatively analyze them. We provide insights into the main characteristics of the community of climate services through Bibliometrics and complement these findings with Network Science. We have computed the centrality of each actor as derived from a Principal Component Analysis of 42 different measures. By exploring the structural properties of the networks of individuals, institutions and countries we derive implications on the most central agents. Furthermore, we detect brokers in the network, capable of facilitating the information flow and increasing the cohesion of the community. We finally analyze the abstracts of the sample via Content Analysis. We find a progressive shift towards climate adaptation and user-centric visions. Agriculture and Energy are the top mentioned sectors. Anglophone countries and institutions are quantitatively dominant, and they are also important in connecting different discipline of the network of scholars, by building on established partnerships. Finding that nodes facilitating the diffusion of information flows (the brokers) are not necessarily the most central, but have a high degree of interdisciplinarity facilitating interactions of different communities. Social media abstract. #WhoisWho in #climateservices? Global potential invasion maps of traded birds under climate and land-cover change

Biological invasions rank among the top five threatening factors affecting biodiversity, but ongoing changes in climate and land cover might exacerbate risks. We used species distribution models for 609 traded bird species on the CITES list to examine the combined effects of projected climate change and land-cover change worldwide on the potential range expansion of bird species with commercial value as pets. The maps of potential invasion (may be inferred as the invasion risk) have been provided in the main manuscript and here, the potential invasion dataset for the current and future times is provided including the species distribution maps, all as GeoTiff files. The maps for the future time are provided for different future years and over a range of climate scenarios (SSP245, SSP370, and SSP585).
