Fishery impacts - CA commercial lobster catch and effort, and trap distribution around marine reserves

These data describe landings and fishing effort for the CA commercial spiny lobster fishery. Data are contained in two tables: 1) a time series collected by the California Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) of lobster catch (kg) and effort (lobster trap pulls) by year (1998-2020) and location (geographic fishery blocks). Catch is recorded and reported to CDFW by fish processors (buyers) with “fish tickets”. Trap pulls are recorded and reported by fishermen with logbooks. 2) The number of traps counted in the water at increasing distances from the boundary of marine reserves, three reserves located in the northern region of the fishery and three from the southern region of the fishery, in November 2022.

Summary of the commercial and recreational striped bass fisheries conducted in Massachusetts from 1986 to present.

This dataset summarizes the commercial and recreational striped bass fisheries conducted in Massachusetts. Data sources used to characterize the state fisheries come from monitoring programs of the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries (Marine Fisheries, the Division) and National Marine Fisheries Service (NOAA Fisheries), which are considered to be essential elements of the long-term management approach described in Section 3 of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s (ASMFC) Fisheries Management Report No. 41 (Amendment #6 to the Interstate Fishery management Plan for Atlantic Striped Bass (IFMP)). Fisheries data are compiled from four Massachusetts regions (Cape Cod Canal, Southern Massachusetts, Cape Cod Bay, Northern Massachusetts). Data begins with year 1986 and is updated to present years as data is made available.

Data from: Stable isotopes reveal the effect of trawl fisheries on the diet of commercially exploited species

Bottom trawling can change food availability for benthivorous demersal species by (i) changing benthic prey composition through physical seabed impacts and (ii) by removing overall benthic consumer biomass increasing the net availability of benthic prey for remaining individuals. Thus trawling may both negatively and positively influence the quantity and quality of food available. Using δ13C and δ15N we investigated potential diet changes of three commercially exploited species across trawling gradients in the Kattegat (plaice, dab and Norway lobster (Nephrops)) and the Irish Sea (Nephrops). In the Kattegat, trawling affected primarily the biomass of benthic consumers, lowering competition. Nephrops showed significant positive relationships for δ13C and a domed relationship for δ15N with trawling. In the Irish Sea, intense trawling had a negative effect on benthic prey. δ13C and δ15N thus showed the inverse relationships to those observed in the Kattegat. Plaice from the Kattegat, showed a significant relationship with trawling intensity for δ13C, but not for δ15N. No relationship was found for dab. Changes of δ13C and δ15N correlated with changes in condition of species. The results show that the removal of demersal competitors and benthos by trawling can change the diets of commercial species, ultimately affecting their body condition.

Whole genome resequencing reveals signatures of rapid selection in a virus affected commercial fishery

<p>Infectious diseases are recognised as one of the greatest global threats to biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. Consequently, there is a growing urgency to understand the speed at which adaptive phenotypes can evolve and spread in natural populations to inform future management. Here we provide evidence of rapid genomic changes in wild Australian blacklip abalone (<em>Haliotis rubra</em>) following a major population crash associated with an infectious disease. Genome scans on <em>H. rubra</em> were performed using pooled whole genome re-sequencing data from commercial fishing stocks varying in historical exposure to haliotid herpesvirus-1 (HaHV-1). Approximately 25,000 SNP loci associated with virus exposure were identified, many of which mapped to genes known to contribute to HaHV-1 immunity in the New Zealand pāua (<em>H. iris</em>) and herpesvirus response pathways in haliotids and other animal systems. These findings indicate genetic changes across a single generation in <em>H. rubra </em>fishing stocks decimated by HaHV-1, with stock recovery potentially determined by rapid evolutionary changes leading to virus resistance. This is a novel example of rapid adaptation in natural populations of a non-model marine organism, highlighting the pace at which selection can potentially act to counter disease in wildlife communities.</p>

Commercial Harvest of Klawock Lake Sockeye Salmon in the District 103 and 104 Purse Seine Fisheries, Southeast Alaska, 2018–2021

<p>The Klawock Lake sockeye salmon (<em>Oncorhynchus nerka</em>) run supports one of the most heavily used subsistence fisheries in Southeast Alaska and is the primary sockeye salmon subsistence resource for the communities of Klawock and Craig. During the period 2011&ndash;2017, the average spawning population declined by 63% and the average reported subsistence harvest declined by 50% compared to the previous decade. A major source of uncertainty regarding the decline in Klawock Lake sockeye salmon abundance is the lack of information regarding harvest in commercial fisheries. This project will provided estimates of the harvest and run timing of Klawock Lake sockeye in nearby commercial purse seine fisheries for four years (2018&ndash;2021) through genetic mixed stock analysis of sampled harvests. The commercial fisheries in management Districts 103 and 104 were targeted because they are terminal to Klawock Lake and most of the commercial harvest of Klawock Lake sockeye salmon likely occurs in those districts. We further split District 103 into two spatial strata: Northern District 103 (subdistricts 50-90) and Southern District 103 (subdistricts 11-40). The commercial harvest of Klawock Lake sockeye salmon was highest in Northern District 103 in three of four years (2018&ndash;2020), and highest in District 104 in one year (2021). Klawock Lake sockeye were virtually absent in the commercial harvest in Southern District 103 in all four years (2018-2021). The total commercial harvest (Districts 103 and 104) of Klawock Lake sockeye salmon was 2,619 fish in 2018, 5,523 fish in 2019, 3,352 fish in 2020, and 6,677 fish in 2021. These data, combined with escapement and subsistence harvests, were used to produce the first estimates of total run size for Klawock Lake sockeye salmon. The total run size varied from year to year, with 13,147 fish in 2018, 14,953 fish in 2019, 19,702 fish in 2020, and 13,600 fish in 2021. Similarly, overall harvest rates varied from 43.9% in 2018 to 59.9% in 2021 (average = 50.9%). Commercial harvest rates averaged lower than the historical averages from nearby sockeye salmon stocks at Hugh Smith and McDonald Lakes. Commercial harvest rates were higher in odd-years than even-years, presumably due to increased fishing pressure on more abundant odd-year pink salmon. The subsistence harvest rates averaged higher (20.1%) than the subsistence harvest rates on McDonald and Hugh Smith Lakes (average &lt; 2%).</p>

Data from: Effects of seal predation on a modelled marine fish community and consequences for a commercial fishery

We constructed a size- and trait-based dynamic marine community model of the Celtic Sea/Biologically Sensitive Area, including grey seals Halichoerus grypus (Fabricius 1791) and harbour seals Phoca vitulina vitulina (Linnaeus 1758) to examine potential resource conflict between seals and commercial trawl fisheries. The model incorporates seal diet preference, population size and commercial fishery catch, with survey data to quantify ecological interactions between seals and fisheries. Total annual consumption by seals was an order of magnitude less than the catch of the modelled trawl fishery. Increasing fishing pressure reduced fish spawning stock biomass (SSB) much more than a proportionally equivalent increase in seal predation. For most fish species, quadrupling seal predation showed little effect on the predicted fishery catch. These results arise from relatively low seal abundance and partial niche partitioning. The fishery harvested a wider range of fish lengths and species than seals consumed. The fish community was dominated by small fish lengths and seals predated on these more than suggested by their calculated diet preference. Seal predation disproportionately affected several fish species not targeted by the fishery, but seal predation did not significantly affect the SSB of any of the species that constitute 90% of the total landings of the fishery. Synthesis and applications. Predation of fish by grey and harbour seals is unlikely to harm commercial trawl fisheries in south-west Irish waters. This conclusion differs from those of some model-based studies of other North Atlantic systems, demonstrating the need for ecosystem-specific evidence in considering such conflicts. In systems with low niche overlap between seals and fisheries, the two are largely decoupled in effect, leaving fishing pressure as the overwhelming determinant of targeted fish stock status.
