Cascade project at North Temperate Lakes LTER - Daily data for key variables in whole lake experiments on early warnings of critical transitions, Paul and Peter Lakes, 2008-2011

Peter Lake's food web was altered by adding largemouth bass at a slow rate while monitoring key food web constituents including littoral minnow abundance indexed as catch per trap per hour, zooplankton biomass, and concentration of chlorophyll a. Paul Lake was manipulated and the same variables were measured there. In Peter Lake, we expected littoral catch of minnows to first increase as minnows moved into the littoral zone due to the threat of bass predation and then decrease due to bass predation. We expected zooplankton biomass to increase as minnows moved into the littoral zone. We expected chlorophyll to decrease due to increased grazing by zooplankton. We expected that variance and autocorrelation of chlorophyll would increase as the food web passed a critical transition. We expected that the time series in Paul Lake would represent the normal variability of an unmanipulated lake

Negative Differential Resistance, Instability, and Critical Transition in Lightning Leader

<p>There is a&nbsp;challenging issue of die out and restrike of leaders in a burst of lightning event,&nbsp;such as multiplicity of strokes in grounded flash or recoil leader in cloud flash, although the argument involves the effects of channel characteristic of negative differential resistance instability, there is internal consistency about the instability, the bi-stability of insulation and induction and their critical transition from the view of bifurcation theory of nonlinear dynamics. In this paper, we examined the differential resistance characteristics of the leader-streams lighting system, we associate the leader-streamer channel differential resistance characteristics and sign change with channel state and instability transitions. The critical current and potential difference conditions for the stable transition of the leader-streamer channel are investigated. It is found that the necessary current required for the stable development of the channel is increased with the length of the leader channel, while the internal channel electric field of the leader decreases accordingly.</p>

Physiological maturity at a critical life‐history transition and flight ability at fledging

Developmental maturity (e.g. body condition, body mass) at major life-history transitions is known to affect fitness across a wide range of taxa. Fledging (leaving the nest), a major life-history transition in birds, is associated with high post-fledging mortality and is widely assumed to be related to poor initial flight ability of fledglings, which, in turn, might be related to developmental maturity at fledging. We investigated individual variation in developmental maturity of both somatic and physiological traits at this critical life-history transition in different ecological contexts (year, first or second broods) to determine the importance of physiological traits related to oxygen-carrying capacity (haematocrit, haemoglobin) for individual variation in initial flight ability at fledging. Haemoglobin concentration and haematocrit at fledging had much higher variance than somatic traits and were more variable across ecological contexts. Furthermore, fledgling haemoglobin concentration was the least developmentally mature of all traits (on average, only 78% of adult concentration). Fledglings from second broods, which are known to have lower post-fledging survival, were less developmentally mature than fledglings from first broods for all traits (except tarsus), with haematocrit and haemoglobin concentration being the most developmentally immature traits (in first vs. second broods, haematocrit: 47·1% vs. 40·9%; haemoglobin: 13·3 vs. 11·6 g dL−1). Models predicting individual variation in two aspects of initial flight ability (total energy gain, take-off angle) were significantly improved when physiological traits (in particular haemoglobin) were incorporated into models based on somatic traits.

Practical guide to using Kendall's τ in the context of forecasting critical transitions

<p>Recent studies demonstrate that trends in indicators extracted from measured time series can indicate approaching to an impending transition. Kendall's τ coefficient is often used to study the trend of statistics related to the critical slowing down phenomenon and other methods to forecast critical transitions. Because statistics are estimated from time series, the values of Kendall'sτare affected by parameters such as window size, sample rate and length of the time series, resulting in challenges and uncertainties in interpreting results. In this study, we examine the effects of different parameters on the distribution of the trend obtained from Kendall's τ, and provide insights into how to choose these parameters. We also suggest the use of the non-parametric Mann-Kendall test to evaluate the significance of a Kendall'sτvalue. The non-parametric test is computationally much faster compared to the traditional parametric ARMA test.</p>

Falls Lake Agent-based Model Critical Transitions Dataset

<p>Data files are provided here. They are output from the Falls Lake ABM at&nbsp;<a href="https://github.com/maskarb/FallsLakeABM">https://github.com/maskarb/FallsLakeABM</a>. Four management scenarios are simulated for 16 shifting climate scenarios. Management Scenario 1 is no management. Management Scenario&nbsp;2 is retrofitting. Management Scenario 3 is retrofitting with light drought restrictions. Management Scenario 4 is retrofitting with severe drought restrictions. The 16 shifting climate scenarios correspond to shifting factors equal to 0.25 - 1.0, increasing in 0.05 increments. For each of the 64 settings (16 climate settings X 4 management scenarios), 100&nbsp;simulations were run to capture stochasticity.</p> <p>Files in Results-mgmt-x folders show the agent-based modeling results for each simulation.&nbsp; Data files (for example, res-mgmt-1-s-0.25-5.txt) describe the storage and deficit for each of the simulations in million cubic meters, reported at a monthly timestep. Columns 5-9,&nbsp;inflow, storage, outflow, totalWaterSupply,&nbsp; waterSupply, report monthly flows.&nbsp;</p> <p>Files in EWS-mgmt-X-window-25&nbsp;shows the value of each early warning signals indicator calculated for log-transformed reservoir storage for each of 100 simulations, for management strategies 1-4 and shifting factors.&nbsp; Winsize is set at 25%, which means that EWS indicators are not calculated until time step 300, or 25% of 1200 time steps.</p>

Recording is downsampled from 256x256 to 128x128 and has been pre-alligned to the Allen atlas. Frames of excessive movement have also been removed. Avalanches can be generated using this file as-is using the code 'generateAvalanches.m' from the github repository.&nbsp;</p> <p>'avalancheStatistics_thresh=1.mat' - all avalanche sizes and durations obtained with a threshold of 1 standarddeviation from all recordings. Loads in matlab as a cell with the first cell containing avalanche sizes seperated on a per-recording basis. Second cell is same but for avalanche durations. Third cell has the condition index for each recording (e.g., 1,2,3...), and fourth cell has the corresponding name of the condition (e.g., 'baseline' corresponds to 1, 'iso. 1%' to 2. etc.). Codes in the GitHub repository can be used to perform avalanche analysis.</p>

Critical transitions and evolutionary hysteresis in movement: Habitat fragmentation can cause abrupt shifts in dispersal that are difficult to revert

<p>Under habitat fragmentation, plant species' survival hinges on the ability of individuals to disperse from one habitat patch to another. While there is evidence that severe habitat fragmentation leads to evolution of reduced dispersal ability and that such decreased mobility is generally detrimental for species' survival, it is unknown whether species adapt via a gradual loss in dispersal ability or via a sudden shift from frequent to infrequent dispersal between patches (i.e., a critical transition). Using both a spatially explicit deterministic and individual-based stochastic model of hydrochorous seed dispersal, we show that a small increase in inter-patch distance can generate an abrupt shift in plant seed dispersal strategy from long to short distances. Most importantly, we found that a substantial increase in connectivity between habitat fragments is required to reverse this loss of long-distance dispersal, due to an evolutionary hysteresis effect. Our theory prompts for re-consideration of the eco-evolutionary consequences of habitat fragmentation as restoring habitat connectivity may require restoration of much higher connectivity levels than currently assumed.</p>
