Flood Depth-Damage Functions from HAZUS and 2015 North Atlantic Coast Comprehensive Study
<p><a href="https://www.fema.gov/flood-maps/products-tools/hazus">HAZUS</a> flood depth-damage functions (DDFs) are commonly used outside of the HAZUS software. As far as I can tell, there is no persistent and archived repository that stores these DDFs. To fill this gap, I reached out to the HAZUS help desk and asked permission to upload the library of HAZUS DDFs to Zenodo. In addition to HAZUS DDFs, I also include a .csv file I created that uses the same format as the HAZUS DDF library to represent the DDFs from the <a href="https://www.nad.usace.army.mil/Portals/40/docs/NACCS/10A_PhysicalDepthDmgFxSummary_26Jan2015.pdf">2015 North Atlantic Coast Comprehensive Study Physical Depth Damage Function Summary Report</a>. </p><p>There are 4 files uploaded to this repository. Below, I indicate the filenames, a brief description, and the source for the data. </p><ol><li>Source/procedure: https://github.com/cran/hazus/tree/master/data. Potentially longer term archiving available from https://rdrr.io/cran/hazus/. I downloaded haz_fl_occ.rda and haz_fl_dept.rda, opened them in R, and wrote out the corresponding files as csvs. <ol><li>haz_fl_dept.csv: This is a file with all DDFs in HAZUS (I believe this is version 5.1). You may be able to learn more about the metadata here: https://rdrr.io/cran/hazus/man/haz_fl_dept.html. The dataset includes occupancy codes (corresponds to one of our other files - haz_fl_occ) and other information that we need to estimate flood damages. The columns are feet relative to first-floor elevation of a structure. </li><li>haz_fl_occ.csv: This is a file with all the occupancy codes for DDFs in HAZUS. Also, I have a pdf locally that I can send, but I am not sure if copyright protections prevent me from posting this myself online. I copy/pasted Table 5-2: Default Damage Functions for Estimation of Structure Damage in Riverine Flood Zones as a csv. <ol><li>riverine_ids.csv: This is a file which indicates the damage function id -- and the source of the damage function (i.e. USACE, FIA, BCAR Jan 2011 report) for "default" damage functions in riverine flood zones. It is useful to have the ability to know what the "default" or "state of the art" damage function approach is for evaluating alternative approaches. </li></ol></li><li>Source/procedure: https://www.nad.usace.army.mil/Portals/40/docs/NACCS/10A_PhysicalDepthDmgFxSummary_26Jan2015.pdf. This is the 2015 NACCS report. I manually coded all the DDFs (not velocity or erosion; just inundation) into a .csv file with the same format as haz_fl_dept.csv.<ol><li>naccs_ddfs.csv: This is a file with the DDFs from the 2015 NACCS report. <br> </li></ol></li></ol>

Data from: Experimental heatwaves compromise sperm function and cause transgenerational damage in a model insect
Climate change is affecting biodiversity, but proximate drivers remain poorly understood. Here, we examine how experimental heatwaves impact on reproduction in an insect system. Male sensitivity to heat is recognised in endotherms, but ectotherms have received limited attention, despite comprising most of biodiversity and being more influenced by temperature variation. Using a flour beetle model system, we find that heatwave conditions (5 to 7 °C above optimum for 5 days) damaged male, but not female, reproduction. Heatwaves reduce male fertility and sperm competitiveness, and successive heatwaves almost sterilise males. Heatwaves reduce sperm production, viability, and migration through the female. Inseminated sperm in female storage are also damaged by heatwaves. Finally, we discover transgenerational impacts, with reduced reproductive potential and lifespan of offspring when fathered by males, or sperm, that had experienced heatwaves. This male reproductive damage under heatwave conditions provides one potential driver behind biodiversity declines and contractions through global warming.
