Seasonal patterns of dietary partitioning in vertebrates

<p>Dietary partitioning plays a central role in biological communities, yet the extent of partitioning often varies dramatically over time. Food availability may drive temporal variation in dietary partitioning, but alternative paradigms offer contrasting predictions about its effect. We compiled estimates of dietary overlap between co-occurring vertebrates to test whether partitioning is greater during periods of high or low food abundance. We found that dietary partitioning was generally greatest when food abundance was low, suggesting that competition for limited food drives partitioning. The extent of dietary partitioning in birds and mammals was also related to seasonality in primary productivity. As seasonality increased, partitioning increased during the nonbreeding season for birds and the breeding season for mammals. Although some hypotheses invoke changes in dietary breadth to explain temporal variation in dietary partitioning, we found no association between dietary breadth and partitioning. These results have important implications for the evolution of dietary divergence.</p>

Climate-driven dietary change on the Colorado Plateau, USA and implications for gender-specific foraging patterns

<p>Complementary archaeological and paleoenvironmental datasets from North Creek Shelter (Colorado Plateau, Utah, USA) are analyzed using the diet breadth model, revealing human dietary patterns during the early and middle Holocene. Abundance indices are derived from botanical and faunal datasets and along with stone tools, are used to test the prediction that increasing aridity caused the decline of high-return resources. This prediction appears valid with respect to botanical resources, as high-ranked plants drop out of the diet after 9800 cal BP and replaced with low-ranked, small seeds. The prediction is not met, however, with respect to faunal resources: high-ranked artiodactyls are consistently abundant in the diet. The effects of climate change on dietary choices are also examined, finding that increased aridity coincides with greater use of small seeds and ground stone tools, but not with increases in low-ranked fauna, such as leporids. The patterns observed from the North Creek Shelter botanical and faunal datasets may reflect different foraging strategies between men and women, thus accounting for the discrepancy that low-ranked plant resources became increasingly abundant in the diet without a corresponding decrease in abundance of high-ranked artiodactyls. If so, then archaeological records with similar datasets should be re-examined with this perspective.</p>

Data from: Dietary patterns during adulthood and cognitive performance in midlife: the CARDIA study

Objective: To investigate whether dietary patterns (Mediterranean diet (MedDiet), Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) and A Priori Diet Quality Score (APDQS)) during adulthood are associated with better midlife cognitive performance. Methods: We studied 2,621 CARDIA participants: 45% black, 57% female, and age 25±3.5 years at baseline (1985-6). Diet scores were calculated from repeated diet history up to year 20. Linear models were used to examine association between tertiles of diet score and year 25 to 30 change in standardized test scores for verbal learning (RAVLT), processing speed (Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST)) and executive function (Stroop Interference), and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) at year 30. Results: Higher scores in all three diets were associated with less decline in verbal memory (all P&lt;0.01). Higher DASH and APDQS scores were associated with less decline on DSST (DASH: low= -0.05, mid= -0.00, high= 0.06; APDQS: low= -0.07, mid= -0.01, high= 0.07, both PTrend=0.02). Higher MedDiet and APDQS scores were associated with less decline on Stroop interference (MedDiet: low=0.10, mid=-0.06, high=-0.03 and APDQS: low=0.11, mid=0.01, high=-0.10, both PTrend&lt;0.01). Odds ratios (95% confidence interval) for poor global cognitive function (≥1 SD below mean MoCA) comparing extreme tertiles of the three dietary scores were 0.45 (0.33-0.62) for MedDiet, 0.38 (0.26-0.54) for APDQS and 0.88 (0.68-1.15) for DASH. Conclusions: Greater adherence to heart-healthy dietary patterns during adulthood was associated with better midlife cognitive performance. Additional studies are needed to define the combination of foods and nutrients for optimal brain health across the life-course.
