Digital Repository of Ireland Member Digitisation Workflows for 2D Image Files: Survey Questions and Dataset
<p>The Digital Repository of Ireland (DRI) issued a survey to its membership, <strong>DRI Member Digitisation Workflows for 2D Images</strong>, which ran from December 7, 2023–January 31, 2024. The survey was conducted to improve the DRI’s understanding of the technical processes and metadata workflows that our members use to digitise and share images in the Repository, in order to better tailor our support for this work and deliver the most complete information about digital images files available to our users. </p> <p>The survey informed the actions taken in WorldFAIR Project WP13 deliverable <a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.10850009" target="_blank" rel="noopener">13.3 Implementing and Testing the Cultural Heritage Image Sharing Recommendations: DRI Case Study Report</a>. The data will inform ongoing work at DRI aimed at improving the transparency of technical information associated with digital assets accessed through the Repository.</p> <p>Read more about the Cultural Heritage Image Sharing Case Study DRI on our website: <a href="https://dri.ie/the-worldfair-project/">https://dri.ie/the-worldfair-project/</a>. </p> <p>Summary: DRI is Ireland's national repository for the arts, humanities, and social sciences data, and operates on a membership scheme. There were 20 respondents to the survey, giving us a response rate of about 35% of DRI's membership. Representation from professional fields of work across the cultural heritage sector was captured in the results (note that some institutions gave multiple responses): 17 Archives, 12 Libraries, 5 Museums and 11 Higher Education Institutions. </p>
Digital Elevation Model - Ipswich Watershed - Idrisi Raster File.
This datalayer is part of a group of layers used for research in the Ipswich River Watershed. This is Digital Elevation Model data for the study area, in a 30-meter grid. The source elevation tile data was provided on the MassGIS website www.state.ma.us/mgis/massgis.htm in ESRI-format shapefile format and imported into IDRISI software using the ShapeIdr command. The resulting vector elevation files were converted to raster format using successive Lineras macro commands. This has the effect of mosaicing the tiles as well. The raster image was filtered once using a low-pass (mean) filter, then masked to the Ipswich study area parameters (extent). This datalayer was produced as part of a research project concerning the Ipswich River Watershed.

Georeferenced and Optimized Digital Asset Files of the Milner Hall in UNESCO World Heritage Sterkfontein Caves
<p>These are the asset files attached to the article: Georeferenced and Optimized Digital Asset of the Milner Hall. The article presents a fully visualized and georeferenced digital asset of a chamber in the Sterkfontein Caves, namely, the Milner Hall, in South Africa’s Cradle of Humankind (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). The creation of which is valuable in virtually connecting the global community to this important paleontological and archeological site. A considerable number of hominin fossils and earlier Stone Age archeological artefacts have been excavated from ancient cave infills at Sterkfontein, including the important Australopithecus specimens, “Little Foot” and “Mrs Ples”. This is also the only publicly accessible, paleoanthropological fossil-bearing cave in the Cradle of Humankind. However, the creation of accurate, visually detailed documentation and emplacement within the larger geomorphological context is challenging here. Real-world constraints, such as availability of equipment, resources and skills are often problematic at heritage sites like this. Furthermore, optimizing data for many uses that is so complex in its topology, scale and textures increases the difficulty in creating a digital asset of this nature. Our asset enables a wide range of use cases, especially within heritage, and scientific planning and outreach. It is a single digital model that contains a spectrum of believable visual effects and surveying accurate layers, and ultimately addresses the aforementioned challenges.</p> <p>This video shows the methods used in the production of this asset: https://youtu.be/e3bmxOzzKSY</p>
