PIE LTER dissolved nutrient and particulate concentrations of freshwater inputs to the Plum Island estuarine system, Massachusetts, taken approximately monthly.

Multi-year data of water chemistry including nutrient concentrations for various forms of N, P, C, as well as suspended sediments, was determined from monthly grab samples taken at watershed inputs to the Plum Island Sound Estuary. Sampling sites were the Ipswich River (Sylvania Dam, Ipswich, MA), Parker River Dam (Central St, Newbury, MA), Egypt River (Ipswich, MA) Mill River (Newbury, MA), Muddy Run (Ipswich, MA), Little River (Newbury, MA). These nutrient concentrations are then used in conjunction with USGS discharge data (recorded at gages in the Parker River at Byfield, MA and the Ipswich River at Ipswich, MA) to calculate annual nutrient loading to the Plum Island Sound Estuary, coming over each dam. Annual yield is also calculated for both dams. Refer to file WAT-VA-Load for loading data.

High-frequency dissolved oxygen, water temperature, wind speed, and radiation data; stream and in-lake nutrient concentration data; and daily metabolism and nutrient loading estimates for 16 lakes in North America and Northern Europe.

In lakes, ecosystem structure and processes are influenced by gross primary production (GPP), ecosystem respiration (R), and net ecosystem production (NEP). The rates of these metabolic processes are often controlled by resource availability, which often reflects catchment loads. Although the relationship between catchment loads and in-lake nutrient concentrations may be well defined in specific lakes, we explored how watershed vs. in-lake predictors of metabolism compare across lake types. To do this, we combined stream loads of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) with high frequency in situ monitoring of lake metabolism and in-lake C, N, and P concentrations from 16 lakes spanning a range of latitudes (39 to 64 degrees N), inflowing stream (0 - 6 streams), and trophic status (oligotrophic to eutrophic). The data package includes high-frequency dissolved oxygen, water temperature, wind speed, and solar radiation data as well as daily estimates of GPP, R, and NEP derived from those data. In addition, the data package includes in-lake and stream concentrations of dissolved organic carbon, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus and stream discharge data. The package also includes estimates of daily carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus loading to each lake derived from the stream concentrations and discharge.

Temperature and concentration of dissolved oxygen in river water measured in the Upper Clark Fork River (Montana, USA) during 2020 and 2021

The LTREB (Long Term Research in Environmental Biology) monitoring project is a portion of the $200 million-dollar (USD) superfund project for ecological restoration of the Upper Clark Fork River (UCFR), associated tributaries, and head water streams including Silver Bow and Warm Springs Creeks. Restoration along the Upper Clark Fork River includes removal of metal-laden floodplain soils, lowering of the floodplain to its original elevation, and re-vegetation of over 70 km of the river's floodplain closest to contaminant sources. The UCFR Long Term Research in Environmental Biology (LTREB) project includes bi-weekly water quality monitoring across a 200-km gradient of heavy metal contamination associated with historic mining. Monitoring includes inorganic phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations, biotic standing stocks, and dissolved and whole-water heavy metal concentrations. The UCFR LTREB monitoring project is conducted within the first 200km of the UCFR and associated tributaries located in western Montana. The monitoring program began in 2017 and will be completed in the year 2023 with potential for funding extension. Surface water samples represented in this data product are collected from six sites on the mainstem of the UCFR. River water is measured at each monitoring site using miniDOT Loggers. Dissolved oxygen (DO) and Temperature (T) are recorded by the sensor at five-, 10-, or 15-minute intervals (as found in the raw data files), then interpolated as needed to five-minute intervals in the product data tables. The analysis-ready data of this dataset represent Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QAQC) -processed DO concentrations from six sites on the mainstem of the UCFR collected in 2020 and 2021.

Time series of dissolved methane and carbon dioxide concentrations for Falling Creek Reservoir, Beaverdam Reservoir and Carvins Cove Reservoir in southwestern Virginia, USA during 2015-2025

Surface samples and depth profiles of carbon dioxide and methane concentrations were sampled from 2015 to 2025 in three drinking water reservoirs in southwestern Virginia, USA: Beaverdam Reservoir (Vinton, Virginia), Carvins Cove Reservoir (Roanoke, Virginia), and Falling Creek Reservoir (Vinton, Virginia). All three reservoirs are owned and operated by the Western Virginia Water Authority as primary or secondary drinking water sources for Roanoke, Virginia. The dataset consists of depth profiles of dissolved greenhouse gas (carbon dioxide, methane) samples measured at the deepest site of each reservoir adjacent to the dam. Additional surface samples were collected at a gauged weir on Falling Creek Reservoir's primary inflow tributary, from a wetland adjacent to Falling Creek Reservoir, and from the reservoir outflow. At Beaverdam Reservoir, additional samples were collected at three outflow sites below the dam and at the mid-reservoir outflow. Samples were collected approximately fortnightly from March-April, weekly from May-October, and monthly in November-February at Falling Creek Reservoir and Beaverdam Reservoir. Samples were collected twice in 2025 at Carvins Cove Reservoir. Additionally, upstream surface samples were taken at multiple tributaries in Carvins Cove Reservoir. In 2019, surface samples along the stream and reservoir continuum in both Falling Creek Reservoir and Beaverdam Reservoir were collected monthly during the summer stratified period. In 2025, littoral samples were collected from Falling Creek Reservoir monthly from June to October (see site descriptions file for geographic coordinates of sampling sites). A maintenance log and quality assurance/quality control analysis scripts accompany the data package.

Hydrochemical Data from a Tropical Andean Glacierized Catchment: δ18O, electrical conductivity, maximum fluorescence intensity, and dissolved organic carbon concentrations from short-term sampling campaigns, Ecuador (2022 and 2024)

Fluorescent dissolved organic matter (FDOM) quality, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration, electrical conductivity (EC), and stable water isotopes (δ¹⁸O and δ2H) were determined in water, snow, and ice samples from a tropical glacierized catchment in the Ecuadorian Andes. The sampling locations were selected to capture the major hydrologic inputs to the main stream channel (glacial melt, tributaries, wetlands, and groundwater springs) and constrain the in-stream spatiotemporal variation in DOM quality and other hydrochemical characteristics. Two sets of high-resolution time series were collected on Oct 13, 2022 and Jun 14, 2024. Time series samples were collected at various upper catchment locations and the outlet simultaneously. DOM quality was characterized via fluorescence spectroscopy and processed using parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC). The DOM quality data are expressed as %FMax values obtained through a 4-component PARAFAC model, where %Fmax 1– 4 are interpreted as terrestrial humic-like, tyrosine-like, tryptophan-like, and microbial humic-like fluorescent components, respectively. DOC concentrations were quantified using high-temperature catalytic combustion, stable water isotopes were analyzed using laser-based spectroscopy, and EC was measured in situ with handheld multiparameter water quality probes.

Dissolved greenhouse gas concentrations derived from the NEON dissolved gases in surface water data product (DP1.20097.001)

This dataset contains partial pressure and molar concentration of dissolved carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide in 34 streams, rivers, and lakes calculated from headspace equilibration samples collected by the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON). All input data were collected by NEON and is available on the NEON data portal at https://data.neonscience.org. Specifically, in situ dissolved gas concentrations were calculated from the air and headspace mixing ratios provided by the NEON Dissolved gases in surface water data product (DP1.20097.001), adjusted for sample and water temperature (DP1.20097.001, DP1.20264.001, DP1.20053.001), barometric pressure (DP1.20097.001, DP1.00004.001), and alkalinity (DP1.20093.001). The final set of inputs is found in the file, input_file, and the processing scripts are available at https://github.com/kellyaho/NEON-GHG-processing. The file, output_file, contains the raw outputs from running the input_file through the processing scripts. There are three outputs for each gas for each sample, one for each of three different pre-equilibration headspace mixing ratios (paired atmospheric samples, loess smoothing of atmospheric samples, and site-specific median). The file, GHG_final, contains the final dataset. This GHG_final uses the outputs from output_file calculated with paired atmospheric samples, and substitutes 0.01 μatm, 0.001 μM, 0.001 μatm, and 0.001 μM for any negative instances of pCH4, [CH4], pN2O, and [N2O], respectively. See methods for more detail. Please cite the NEON data inputs (listed below), in addition to this dataset, when using the data. NEON is sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and operated under cooperative agreement by Battelle. This material is based in part upon work supported by NSF through the NEON Program.

Summer high frequency measurements of dissolved O2 and CO2 concentrations and water temperature at the surface of 11 northern lakes

This dataset includes high frequency paired measurements of dissolved O2 and CO2 concentrations at the surface (0.5 to 2 m depth) of 11 lakes in the Northern Hemisphere. Measurements were taken every 2 hours in summer (July and August) of various years depending on lakes (between 2011 and 2014). The dataset is used to test a conceptual framework on the controls of coupling and decoupling of these two gases. In all lakes dissolved CO2 was measured with infrared analyzer coupled with a diffusion membrane and dissolved O2 with optodes. All gas measurements are paired with water temperature provided by one of the gas probe (usually from the O2 probe).
