Data from: Accounting for heterogeneity when estimating stopover duration, timing and population size of red knots along the Luannan Coast of Bohai Bay, China
1. To successfully perform their long-distance migrations, migratory birds require sites along their migratory routes to rest and refuel. Monitoring the use of so-called stopover and staging sites provides insights into (1) the timing of migration and (2) the importance of a site for migratory bird populations. A recently developed Bayesian superpopulation model that integrates mark-recapture data and ring density data enabled the estimation of stopover timing, duration and population size. Yet, this model did not account for heterogeneity in encounter (p) and staying (ϕ) probabilities. 2. Here we extended the integrated superpopulation model by implementing finite mixtures to account for heterogeneity in p and ϕ. We used simulations and real data on red knots Calidris canutus staging in Bohai Bay, China, during spring migration to (1) show the importance of accounting for heterogeneity in encounter and staying probabilities to get unbiased estimates of stopover timing, duration and numbers of migratory birds at staging sites and (2) get accurate stopover parameter estimates for a migratory bird species at a key staging site that is threatened by habitat destruction. 3. Our simulations confirmed that heterogeneity in p affected stopover parameter estimates more than heterogeneity in ϕ. Bias was particularly severe when most birds had both low ϕ and p. Bias was largest for population size, intermediate for stopover duration and negligible for stopover timing. 4. 50,000-100,000 red knots were estimated to annually stop for 5-9 days in Bohai Bay between 10 and 30 May. This shows the key importance of this staging site for this declining species. There were no clear changes in stopover parameters over time. 5. Our study shows the importance of accounting for heterogeneity in both encounter and staying probabilities for accurately estimating stopover duration and population size and provides an appropriate modelling framework.

SWOT-compliant GRDC river flow dataset for the estimation of Flow-Duration Curves
<p>This repository hosts the data used in the manuscript "Potential legacy of SWOT mission for the estimation of Flow-Duration Curves” by Alessio Domeneghetti, Serena Ceola, Alessio Pugliese, Simone Persiano, Irene Palazzoli, Attilio Castellarin, Alberto Marinelli, Armando Brath</p> <p><span>The study investigates the potential of the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission for the estimation of Flow-Duration Curves (FDCs) globally. SWOT-like river flow data is derived from the Global Runoff Data Centre (GRDC) dataset by selecting river gauging stations with a cross section wider than 100 m and with more than 10-year long daily river flow time series. Overall, 1200 river gauging stations are considered, from which 24 alternative SWOT-like river flow datasets can be derived by assuming different satellite revisiting times, biases and random errors, as detailed in the manuscript.</span></p> <p><span>The dataset includes detailed features on the selected 1200 river gauging stations. GRDC river flow daily time series for each station is provided as .csv. A .shp file provides the geographical location of each GRDC gauging station, including GRDC number, river, gauging station municipality, country, latitude and longitude, contributing area, altitude and Köppen-Geiger climate classification.</span></p>

Spatial orientation and navigation rely on information about landmarks and self-motion cues gained from multi-sensory sources. In this study, we focused on self-motion and examined the capability of rodents to extract and make use of information about own movement, i.e. path integration. Path integration has been investigated in depth in insects and humans. Demonstrations in rodents, however, mostly stem from experiments on heading direction; less is known about distance estimation. We introduce a novel behavioural paradigm that allows for probing temporal and spatial contributions to path integration. The paradigm is a bisection task comprising movement in a virtual reality environment in combination with either timing the duration ran or estimating the distance covered. We performed experiments with Mongolian gerbils and could show that the animals can keep track of time and distance during spatial navigation.

Data from: Estimating the duration of speciation from phylogenies
Speciation is not instantaneous but takes time. The protracted birth-death diversification model incorporates this fact and predicts the often observed slowdown of lineage accumulation towards the present. The mathematical complexity of the protracted speciation model has barred estimation of its parameters until recently a method to compute the likelihood of phylogenetic branching times under this model was outlined (Lambert et al. 2014). Here we implement this method and study using simulated phylogenies of extant species how well we can estimate the model parameters (rate of initiation of speciation, rate of extinction of incipient and good species, and rate of completion of speciation) as well as the duration of speciation, which is a combination of the aforementioned parameters. We illustrate our approach by applying it to a primate phylogeny. The simulations show that phylogenies often do not contain enough information to provide unbiased estimates of the speciation-initiation rate and the extinction rate, but the duration of speciation can be estimated without much bias. The estimate of the duration of speciation for the primate clade is consistent with literature estimates. We conclude that phylogenies combined with the protracted speciation model provides a promising way to estimate the duration of speciation.
